"Izuku? Is that you?" His mother's sweet, but concerned voice came from the kitchen. Though he could hear the scurry of her feet as she came to greet him.
"Hey, mom." He shrugged his backpack off his shoulders and it landed on the floor with a heavy, "Thump." as his mother enfolded him in a firm, comforting hug.
"Where were you? Schools been out for nearly an hour and a half."
"Umm..." Izuku remembered himself standing on the ledge of the school, staring out onto the city, then his vision slowly dropping to gaze at the hard concrete down below him. Numerous thoughts and imaginings came unwanted through his brain as his breath became shallow. But he didn't have the nerve to do anything, finally backing away from the ledge and going home. What if he had..? He winced at the idea. He couldn't. He hugged his mother tighter. "I was just working on an after-school extra credit project...I forgot to call you."
She backed away and cupped his face in her soft hands. "Just know, you can tell me anything. I'm here for you Izuku baby, mama's here if you need anything."
He gently removed her hands from his face and looked her in the eyes, beaming. "I know."
The corners of her lips tugged into a heart-warming smile, all worry dissipating, except for the small constant twinge in her eyes. "Dinner will be ready soon. Don't forget to tidy your room." Her slippers sounded light on the floor as she walked back to the kitchen to finish preparing the meal, humming happily.
As soon as she was out of his line of sight, his joyful facade crumpled like a a piece of paper. His face wore a simple, weary expression, which would make one wonder if he had slept properly the night before. Maybe he could earn a living in acting he thought sarcastically, though scoffing out loud at the notion. How much lower could he sink? His eyelids started to droop, and he trudged toward his room. He peered at his darkened room through the doorway, with books lying askew on the floor, and his bed still unmade. He let out a long sigh and flopped down on his bed, not even bothering to change out of his school clothes. Consciousness started to leave him as he drifted into slumber, sleep calling him from the depths. "I'll just...rest..a bit..."
"...."
"Are you seeing this!? He's already saved a hundred people!!"
The video of Allmight was playing in front of him. What was happening?
"And it's only been ten minutes so far!! Wow!!
Wait...did he get shorter? Why couldn't he move?
"And he's smiling!!
It was like Izuku was watching from behind someone else's eyes...The eyes of his younger self?
"Fear not! Why you ask? Because...I AM HERE!!" The screen zoomed in on Allmights face.
Izuku could feel hot tears pour down his face as he swiveled to see his distressed mother.
His mother was shaking like a leaf as he pointed at the screen.
"That's....what I wanna be. A super cool superhero like that."
His mother's face cracked and she ran over to him. "I'm so sorry Izuku. I'm sorry!!"
Not this bullshit again. He'd heard enough of it. But even so, just hearing his mother break down created a fissure in his heart. Why....why.....why!?
....why him?
He sat up like a bullet, a cool sheen of sweat covering his forehead, and tears pricking in the corners of his eyes.
How much lower....could he sink...
