本書以齊克果的存在三階段（美學、倫理與宗教）為基礎，將其修改，主張人類存在處境分成情意、認知、道德及宗教四種，再依據其活動形態，分成二十四境。本書將指出，人無論處身於哪一境，亦會因為無法實現自我，面臨齊克果哲學所言之存在者的絕望。而克服絕望的唯一方法，就是透過宗教我使自我諸境達至統合，以免蔽於任一階段。
