All creations carry a trace of the maker's ethereal energy, whether deliberately placed in the magical Artifacts made by the Alchemists, or unwittingly left in the handiwork of ordinary people.

Kazia can feel that energy, in both machines and people. Give her a damaged machine, and she can trace its energy to the problem, and know precisely how to repair it. People, though, are far more complicated. People hurt more often than not, and reading them often hurts Kazia. Better to keep to herself and tinker with the machines.

Having fled her home country of Valesk to escape her family, Kazia has found a home in the countryside of neighboring Caedra, where no one minds her reclusive nature, and no one knows that her father is a Valeskan Prince.

But Valesk is on the brink of upheaval, threatening to drag half the continent into conflict, and Kazia's cruel father is hunting her. She'll be safer in the capital of Caedra, sheltered in the castle as a member of the Queen's Alchemists.

And while life in the castle does promise fulfilling work with magical Artifacts as well as the support of her childhood teacher, she'll also face an intriguing but aggravating fellow exile who mistrusts her, an apprentice she doesn't know how to mentor, a secretive supervisor, a troublesome brother, and the possibility that true safety may only be found if she'll come out of hiding.

The story starts with our female protagonist, but grows into more of an ensemble cast, told through multiple POV. Chapters 1-8 (parts 2-17) comprise the collection of the ensemble. After that it's all magical shenanigans, romantic entanglements, a little bit of smut, dangerous situations, questionable decision making, taking down some bad guys, and a little bit more smut.
