Soulmates. The very word sent love to her heart. Cara never really gave the mark on her palm much thought as a child, but ever since she felt emotions that Cara was sure was not hers she had kept a close eye on it. It was a simple mark: a yellow puzzle piece missing its other half. Sometimes she would wonder what color her soulmate’s was.
Cara took a sip of her hot coffee and glanced outside of her window to see rain falling from the sky. This was her favorite type of weather. She couldn’t help but close her eyes and enjoy the peaceful feeling.
Suddenly she felt a sudden tinge of curiosity. That wasn’t her. Cara glanced at her palm and saw it shining a faint glow. It was him. What made him so curious, she wondered.
Cara smiled and sent waves of love towards him, hoping that he would feel it. Surprise came towards her, but soon love filled her chest. Was he shocked at the sudden sign of affection? She giggled at the thought.
She couldn’t wait to meet him.
“Hm… twins, eh? I think that yellow would be a good color for them.” Cara mused as she wrote down notes on her pad.
The mother in front of looked at her thoughtfully, “Yes, I think so too. But what about pink or blue?”
“Trust me, ma’am. Pink and blue are so last season; don’t you agree?”
“I couldn’t agree more. Yellow it is!”
With a grin she put her pen down and said, “Well then, I will send you the designs and suggestions for their baby room right after I— “that was strange. What was this feeling. This wasn’t something she has ever felt before, but she knew that it wasn’t the positive kind. She swallowed and then retained her smile, “Right after I finish it.”
“Thank you very much. I’ll wait for them.”
Cara waved her goodbye and then sat back down on her chair. What was he doing? She sent her confused emotions through their mark, and waited for an answer.
There was none.
Cara sat by herself in her room. It has been a month since the first time she felt that strange feeling, and it has only gotten worse. What was he doing? She couldn’t help but worry. Without warning, Cara started to have a coughing fit. Her lungs felt as if they were burning! It didn’t stop there: it was continuous. Was he…smoking?
She sent a wave of worry towards him, but again there was no response. Was he alright? Why was he doing this? He had never smoked before, not once in his life.
A scream came from Cara’s room. Tears were pouring down her eyes as her body shook from pain. What was happening!? It felt as if she was sustaining hits and cuts that wasn’t even happening. Through her clouded vision Cara saw bruises starting to form on her skin.
Someone was hurting her soulmate. Why? She didn’t have the mind to think about it, her body only focusing on the pain the wracked her body. It continued on this way for a few more minutes until painful aches were the only things she felt.
Exhausted, Cara touched her mark; sending her pain and sorrow towards her partner. What was he going through that would make him feel this much? Why was he not responding to her the way he did before?
Cara nearly jumped when she felt guilt. It was him! He was there! Cara felt the whirls of emotions that he was feeling causing her to feel dizzy from the sudden barrage. Cara started to sob. Was this what he was feeling? Why? It didn’t stop there, he continued sending emotions as if he was going on a rant.
Cara ignored her pain and held her palm close to her, always sending love for every negative emotion. Soon, he calmed down and returned her love. She smiled and wiped away her tears. It’s going to be alright.
For some reason, Cara was feeling very woozy. It was the reason why she went home early from work, because she thought if she continued that way she would probably pass out. Lying down on her couch she hiccupped and laughed. It was a funny feeling.
Coughing, Cara realized that he was smoking again. She no longer tried to stop him from doing so, because it didn’t seem like it was possible. It was already a habit for him. Cara just had to suck it in and deal with it.
Still though, this woozy feeling was enjoyable for some reason. Cara hiccupped again and giggled to herself on the couch, until she felt something that was unfamiliar for her. Pleasure? Alert, Cara tried to concentrate on the soft glow of her palm. What was he doing?
Cara frowned and curled up until she was hugging her knees. It came to her again. Why was he feeling this? Cara brought her hand into a fist, and there it was again. This time with a bit of guilt. That was… he was…
It felt as if a knife had stabbed her right in the chest when realization hit her. He was with another woman. Silent tears fell from her eyes when heartbreak and sadness invaded her emotions.
No. No… she didn’t want to feel this. Cara didn’t want to feel the pleasure he felt from being with someone that wasn’t her. No! Cara sobbed and covered her eyes. No, no, no, no! Stop! Why was he doing this!?
“Please…!” Cara didn’t want this to continue, “Stop… please!” she did her best to send her emotions to him, but he didn’t stop. He continued.
Cara couldn’t explain how… how betrayed she felt. How could he do this? Had he forgotten about her existence? Did he no longer care? Did he not love her?
It was like this for the rest of the night until Cara was no longer able to cry. She lied down on her bed motionless, with her bloodshot eyes staring at the darkness of her room. When it finally stopped she assumed that he had fallen asleep, most likely right next to a girl.
Sighing, she turned over and closed her eyes. The ache in her chest was still there.
After months Cara did not feel like going to work, and only stared at her hand to where her soulmark was placed. Yellow. She always loved that color, that is until now. Pain. Pain. Pain. Why wasn’t he sending any emotions towards her anymore? The pain in her heart would not go away, and the only thing left was loneliness. Had she done something wrong? Why was he ignoring her?
In a daze, she saw her razor resting on the sink, and slowly took it into her fingers. Without a thought she slid the blade across her wrist, the familiar tinge of pain (although physical) bringing relief to her senses. Cara must make sure it didn’t go too deep. A bit hesitant, she brought it onto her skin once again. It felt… nice.
Shock, anger, and worry suddenly hit her, causing her to drop the razor. It was him. She immediately zapped back. Cara was hurting him. She kicked the razor away and sent guilt towards him, Cara didn’t mean to give him pain.
Cara put on a small coat and left her apartment. She walked with her head down and her hands inside of pockets, her body going on auto-pilot. It felt as if she was blank. No thought entered her mind, and her eyes just stared at nothing.
It seems as if she was also unable to register the time too, since when she finally looked up Cara realized she had been walking for quite a long time already. She was already very far away from her apartment.
Sighing, she right and saw her face on the glass’s reflection. Cara snorted to herself since she looked absolutely horrible, like she just suffered a break up. Well, I guess it was something like that. She decided to fix up her appearance using the window as her mirror.
Only to be shocked when water was sprayed onto the glass from the other side, and the face of an annoyed guy came into her view. Looks like he was in the middle of cleaning up his store. Cara looked into his eyes, and then it came.
The most beautiful feeling bloomed in her chest as she stared as if she was in a daze. All the positive emotions were filling her up and it made Cara feel weak, causing her to fall onto her knees. What was this.
The sound of the jingling of bells and the swinging of a door reached her ears and Cara turned to see what it was, her eyes still hooded. Wow he was handsome. He was… he was Cara’s soulmate. Soulmate. Cara couldn’t help but reach out for him, because it’s all her body was telling her to do.
He was breathing hard and looking at her the same way she was. Was he feeling it too? Without warning Cara was brought into a hug.
Cara returned it without a thought and breathed in his scent. Her soulmate. Her soulmate was here. She laughed out in happiness because this was the best feeling ever! The most wonderful of all feelings! Her soulmate!
And then he spoke to her with a voice that made her melt into his arms, “I found you… I love you so much.” Wait. Love?
Cara pushed him away and shook her head, “No… no.” everything came back to her; what he did. Her mind told her to go back into his embrace, but she didn’t want to.
Realization came into his eyes, and guilt covered his expression, “I… I didn’t mean to… I’m so sorry!”
She didn’t want to scream. She didn’t want to yell. She was just breathless.
“I was drunk! And she was just there and… I lost it.” So that’s why she was feeling woozy, “I’m sorry!” he gritted his teeth and then looked at her wrist, “Your…” he went towards her and gently held her hand.
Just by his touch alone she felt joy, “Let go.”
He went wide eyed when he saw the fresh scars on her wrist, and then looked at her, “This is my fault.” His hand went up to brush her cheek and Cara had to stop herself from leaning into it. “I… I was stupid. I started smoking even though I knew that you didn’t, I did drugs, I drank, I did horrible things to you. I’ve stopped. I no longer do those things! I went to rehab, I substituted smoking with mint, I don’t drink anymore.” He brought his hands to rest on her shoulders and then faced her with sincere eyes, “I’m sorry… I really am. I’ve done my best to change! Please forgive me.”
Cara bit her lip when tears started to slide down her face. Why now, tears? She thought that they had already ran out. Tired, she rested her head on his shoulder, and gripped onto his sleeves softly.
Once again he pulled her closer into a hug, and hid his face in her hair, “I’m sorry… I’m sorry… God, I’m so sorry.”
“I wish I was there for you…” Cara whispered.
“You were always there for me, but I just didn’t listen.” His hold on her got tighter, “Please forgive me.”
Cara hiccupped and nodded, “I forgive you.” She had been with him through a bond her whole life, been there during his worst, and hoped that she would never waver in love, “I forgive you.” She repeated. How could she not?
He pushed her back slowly and asked, “What’s your name?”
Biting her lip, she tried to hold back another wave of tears, “C-Cara.”
He smiled and brought his face closer to hers, “Nice to meet you, Cara. I’m Teff.” He kissed her cheek and whispered into her ears, “I love you, Cara.”
The dam that held back her tears broke and soon Cara was a sobbing mess, causing Teff to fall back surprised, “I…” she looked at him with and said between hiccups, “I love you, Teff. I love you so much!”
Teff grinned and brought their hands together, only to feel a tingling feeling. Both of the looked at their palms to see that they were no longer bearing one puzzle piece, but two. Yellow fit perfectly into green, and green fit perfectly into yellow.
That amazing feeling came back to Cara, and this time she couldn’t contain it. She circled her arms around his neck and kissed him, Teff responding immediately.
The two of them shared the same feeling together, ignoring everything in their surroundings and focusing only on each other. The rest of the world did not matter at that moment. What mattered was that they were together at last, and that they would never be separated ever again.
