Episode 13 Continued - Curious Kitten
“Oh, Sebastian, thank God you’re back,” Scarlet said in a soft voice, rushing toward me as I set my coat on the rack beside the front door.
“What happened?” I questioned.
“It’s master…” Scarlet whispered, “Cammie’s been trying to calm her, but nothing’s working.”
I then stepped past her and continued down the hall, making my way toward master’s bedroom before I threw open the door.
Yumi stood at the window, holding a half-broken vase as Cammie remained far away from her, holding her hands up innocently.
“What is going on?” I said then, glancing around.
“Oh, Sebastian,” Cammie said, gazing over, “thank God! She keeps trying to kill me! She already punched Carter across the face!”
“Well… he kinda deserved it after waking her up so rudely,” Scarlet muttered.
I glanced over at her. “What did he do?”
“Well, master was having a nightmare, and I was afraid to wake her up. Everyone else heard the screaming and came in the room, Maddox and Scarlet refused to wake her up, but Carter just shook her, making her head snap back and forth like a doll!”
“She punched him across the face,” Scarlet finished. “Maddox took him to get some ice.”
“Monsters!” Yumi said, holding the vase threateningly as her hand shook. “All monsters! Monsters!”
“You idiots,” I muttered then, eyes glowing angrily. “Or I shall say he’s the idiot.”
“Sebastian…?” Scarlet whispered in concern.
“Master has night terrors,” I said then, gazing up, “haven’t you ever heard of them?!”
Cammie’s cheeks burned a bright red, and Scarlet’s brows drew together.
“It means she thinks she’s still dreaming!” I snapped. “A nightmare, nonetheless. And by the way he woke her up, it made things worse. She’s confused and disoriented, and it’s making her agitated.”
“Monsters don’t talk to me behind my BACK!” Yumi screamed, the hand holding the vase shaking. “You insolent fiends! I am not afraid of you!”
“Can’t she see it’s us…?” Scarlet whispered uneasily.
“She can’t see straight, either,” I explained. “To her, we look like monsters. As I said, she’s disoriented, and waking her up like that made it worse. She thinks we’re here to harm her, that’s why she’s trying to kill you, Cammie.”
Cammie glanced over at Yumi then. “What do we do…?”
“I’ll do it,” I said then, lashes lowering. “Just don’t speak, understand?”
“But, Sebastian—” Scarlet started.
“I asked if you understood?” I cut in, glaring at them.
The both shrank back and nodded, stepping backwards to the wall.
I sighed and closed my eyes, gazing back up seconds later. “Master.”
“Monster,” she said, still holding the broken vase, “monster.”
I gazed down to find blood slipping off her hand and dropping to the floor, and I looked back up at her.
She cut herself. She didn’t feel it?
I just stepped over to her, and she held the vase higher. “Monster! NO! DON’T GET ANY CLOSER!”
I kept walking.
“I SAID TO STAY!” she screamed.
When I got close enough, she swung the vase at me, but I just caught her wrist.
Her eyes widened when her hand shook against my grip, and she tried to pull away, but I tightened my hold.
“MONSTER!” she cried then, fighting me. “MONSTER!”
“Master,” I said gently, “you’re not dreaming. You’re alright.”
“I WILL NOT DIE FROM THE LIKES OF YOU!” she screamed, swinging her other arm at me.
I caught it, too.
She then attempted to kick me, but I hopped up and let go of her hands, swinging around above her before landing on my feet, directly behind her.
She flipped around and swung the vase at me, but I caught her arm again.
“Master,” I said then, eyes soft, “master, it’s me. I know you can’t see me, but I know you can hear my voice.”
“Monster voice…” she said, glaring, “monster.”
I just narrowed my eyes. “Master, I know how to calm you. Just listen. Listen.”
“I don’t have to listen to the likes of you! I will not die tonight!”
But I said it anyway, “Vovi me tibi. Numquam iterum timebis qui ate semper tuebor. Contractus noster est qui nos obligat. Me solum timebis.”
Yumi immediately froze, eyes widening.
Scarlet looked at Cammie then, breaths shortened. “That was Latin, wasn’t it? You know Latin! What did he say?”
Cammie’s lashes lowered. “‘I vowed myself to you. You will never be afraid again because I will always protect you. That is our contract that binds us. You shall only fear me’.”
Scarlet’s lips parted. “What is he talking about?”
Cammie never responded.
“Cammie…” Scarlet whispered then, gazing up in concern, “her eye… it’s… glowing.”
Indeed, it was. The star in the center of the pentagram was glowing a bright white, glistening in the light pink iris.
I spoke our vow, so she now understood that this was me.
Yumi’s lips parted. “Sebastian…?”
I smiled.
But her eyes suddenly rolled to the top of her head, and she toppled over.
I caught her, but she was already unconscious.
“Master!” Scarlet cried, running over to us.
“It’s alright,” I said then, scooping Yumi up, “she’s just tired. That’s all.”
Scarlet gazed over at Cammie. “Is that… normal for a night terror? Passing out?”
Cammie shrugged, looking too calm for this situation.
Scarlet gazed over at me as I lay Yumi down onto the mattress. “Is she going to be alright…?”
I pulled the covers over her. “She’s going to be fine. But next time,” I stood up, pointing to them accusingly, “and make sure to pass this on. When she has a nightmare DO NOT wake her up. In fact, if I am not available, do not wake her until I come home. No matter how bad the nightmare is.”
“But you always wake her up,” Scarlet whispered, brows drawing together. “Can’t you teach us how to wake her correctly?”
“Scarlet,” Cammie warned.
“No, I’m very serious,” she stated then, shaking her head. “I can hear her cry all night. There has to be something I can do.”
“Scarlet, drop it,” Cammie said then, voice dark. “Only Sebastian can do it.”
“Why?” she said then, brows drawing together as tears burned her eyes. “Why? Can’t I just… I hate feeling helpless!”
“You are far from helpless, Scarlet,” I said then, stepping over to her. I set my hands on her shoulders as she gazed up at me, tears slipping down her cheeks. “There are some things that us servants do best for our master, alright? Your job is to protect master. To keep her safe, and you never fail to do so, I know it.”
She just stared at me, the tears stopping. “Your eyes….”
My lashes lowered.
Her lips parted as her eyes widened more. “You’re… you’re in love with her.”
I let go of her shoulders then, stepping backward to the bed.
She lightly set her hand over her mouth, brows drawing together. “It all… makes sense now. But… you mentioned a contract. What did you mean by that?”
“Scarlet,” I warned.
“I mean it!” she cried then. “I hate secrets!”
“Scarlet, shh!” Cammie hissed. “Master is sleeping.”
“Tell me,” Scarlet said then. “Tell me, please.”
“Cammie will explain it to you,” I said then, gazing over at her with dark eyes. “I told her not to tell anyone, but now she can. Master made me swear to never tell anyone else, but others can tell others.” I gazed up at Cammie then. “Take her out of here, and tell her.”
Cammie nodded, and Scarlet immediately dashed from the room and waited patiently for Cammie to follow.
“It’s not just the fact that she only trusts you, is it?” Cammie said then, gazing up. “The reason why only you can wake her up is because you’re bound. She immediately knows it’s you, and she only responds to you. Is that why you cannot teach us to do it?”
My eyes darkened, but I never responded.
She just looked away, smiling slightly. “I thought so.”
She then turned and started out from the room, closing the door seconds later.
