After saving my money up, I finally got enough to get a house! It’s a great neighborhood, it’s close to work, and I got it at a great deal. Everything in life seemed to be falling in place, and the sky was the limit. The only thing that seemed to be out of place was my next door neighbor, who was definitely a bit strange.
Don’t get me wrong, my next door neighbor was nice and everything. She was a couple of years younger than me, not exactly what you would call bad looking, but not really my type either. Just no chemistry there. Right away, I felt something very....different about her. Something I couldn’t quite put my finger on.
When I first met her, it was a day after I moved in and she brought a housewarming gift, a pot of homemade chicken and dumplings. It was really nice, and I thanked her. She was really insistent on me trying it right there in front of her, and it kind of annoyed me. I never liked pushy people, but I thought maybe she just wanted to see how much I enjoyed the food. The whole time we talked, she had this nervous excitement about ehr as if she was intimidated by me but also liked being around me. She asked me a lot of questions, seeming to want to know my whole life story.
It dawned on me that she probably had a crush on me, considering I was a little older and the new guy in the neighborhood. Being a guy I was a little flattered and made conversation to try and be friendly. I kept trying to hint that I had things to do, but when I did she kept asking if she could help me with them. It was odd, but she probably wanted to impress me. Eventually, I thanked her for the food and figured we’d see each other occasionally as we came and gone, but I was wrong.
Every time I left the house, I swear I could feel eyes on me. Whenever I looked towards her house I could barely glimpse the blinds being moved like she was watching me and tried to hide whenever I looked. When I got home from work, she would always just happen to be checking her mail , and would try to stop and talk to me. I started making up excuses to avoid conversation, trying not to hurt her feelings. She seemed to have it for me pretty bad.
She eventually got the hint, and I stopped seeing her when I came home but I could always feel her eyes on me when I came home too. A week later, I began dating one of my co-workers, a girl I’d been friends with for a while so we already knew each other quite well. Not only was she a great girl, but if my neighbor saw her with me she’d hopefully stop everything altogether. That’s when the love notes started.
I would find love notes and love poems stuck under my front door, and at first I thought they were my girlfriend’s, yet after mentioning them to her she said she didn’t know what I was talking about. I decided enough was enough, and I went over to speak to my neighbor.
When I knocked on the door, she answered right away as if she was waiting on me. She said , “Hey,” in kind of a bashful kind of way, attempting to sound cute. The act irritated me even more.
“Look, I know that you like me,” I started, feeling the uncomfortableness of her presence. She was staring at me so intently, as if she couldn’t look away. “And if you haven’t figured it out already, I have a girlfriend now. I know it’s you that’s been dropping me notes, so I need you to please stop. You seem like a nice enough person and all, but to be perfectly honest you’re starting to bother me.”
“Oh, ok....” She said, looking away, tears welling up. My worst fears actualized.
“I didn’t mean...I don’t wanna hurt your feelings.I don’t know how else to say it, so please try not to take it too hard. I just would like to be left alone if you could do that. I don’t mind you briefly saying hi to me, but nothing more than that.”
“Yeah....ok, ” she began sobbing really hard now, and turned quickly inside and shut the door behind her. I felt really bad , but she needed to hear the truth. No point in stringing her along. So everything seemed to be in order, or at least I thought it did.
One particular day, I came home and went straight to my computer to unwind by surfing the internet and listening to heavy metal. Despite what you may think, the rock music actually relaxed me. I kept the light off in my room while I was on the computer, because it was so bright it put too much glare on the computer. It was now around 5:30 , and my girlfriend would be there soon. I’d left my door unlocked for her to come on in, especially since I wouldn’t be able to hear her with my music playing.
I almost jumped when I felt her hand on my shoulder, as she usually identified herself, but again my music was up really loud.
“Hey babe,” I said, not really paying attention to her. I was really into reading something, so I was distracted. “Be with ya in a sec.”
While I kept reading, I could tell she didn’t leave because I could feel her standing there. Then she ran her hands through my hair, and I immediately felt relaxed.
“Mmm...that feels really good,” I said. “Feel free to continue,” and she did for another minute or so, then she stopped and I felt her step away.
After another minute or two, I finished reading my article and took my earbuds out.
“Hey, I need to get a quick shower before we head out, okay?” There was no reply, and just as I was about to leave my bedroom to get my girlfriend my phone rang. It was the text notification, and to my surprise it was a text from my girlfriend, which read, “Sorry, running late. Stuck in traffic. Should be there in another 15 minutes.”
The hairs stood up on the back of my neck, and I grabbed the baseball bat I kept in my room and searched the house, but to my surprise, found no one. By the time I’d searched every possible space of the home, my girlfriend showed up. She noticed the concern on my face. I just told her I heard a noise or some other vague excuse. I couldn’t prove who or what had touched me, but I had a good idea. Yet, it may also have been my imagination, unless my house was haunted, and I knew that wasn’t the case.
Over time, I close enough to my girlfriend that I shared my house key with her, especially since we both spent most of our time around each other and would spend the night, things like that. Things were starting to get more serious. She even started cleaning up around the house when I wasn’t home, which was quite a nice gesture, even though she said she didn’t really do any cleaning, I knew she was simply being modest. That’s just the kind of gal she was.
After a while, we were getting close to our one year anniversary and my girlfriend kept saying she had something really special in store for us. My mind wandered aimlessly, being that she was quite creative and probably had something amazing planned. I couldn’t wait.
The day of the anniversary, I hadn’t heard from my girlfriend all day and I figured she was probably being secretive and wanted to surprise me with her plans. I felt bad not having planned anything, but knowing she already had something in store there was no need for me to. I came home to find all the lights off, which was unusual. My suspicions lifted when I opened the front door to find candles littered all through the house.
Walking around, I noticed the house was cleaned completely, I’m talking immaculate. A rose sat by a note on the kitchen table that read, “Leave your phone here. Don’t want any interruptions ;) ”
By the note and rose was a trail of rose petals going to the bedroom , which I excitedly followed. In the bedroom was a note on the bed that said, “get changed in the bathroom and I’ll be in shortly after.” The moment I stepped into the bathroom, I heard a loud metallic “click” followed by a sharp, stabbing pain on my ankle. I looked down in horror to see my foot was caught in a beartrap!
“What the hell?!!!” I shouted in surprise, my leg now caught hard in the steel metal claws. I reached down and tried to pry it off , but with no luck.
“Hey handsome!” A voice called from the bedroom, and the lights all flashed on. Standing before me now was my psychotic neighbor. She was standing in front of me, dressed completely in my own clothing. Her eyes were bright and wide with insanity, and she smiled so hard it made my skin crawl.
“What are you doing?!! Get me out of here!” I yelled.
“Oh, honey don’t worry about that! I wanted to make sure you didn’t run away. We’re going to have some fun! After all , it’s our anniversary!”
“You crazy bitch, what are you doing! Put my clothes back!”
“Oh, I’d rather take them off for you, babe! Although I do like your baseball tee better, it’s softer. But the fabric of these jeans is so much better than your sweat pants. Do you like what I’ve done with the place?”
“No! WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU? I’M CALLING THE...” then realized mid-sentence my phone was in he kitchen.
“Oh, you need this?” she smiled slyly, holding up my phone and wiggling it at me. “No need to worry about all of that! I already called......’her” and told her you’d meet her at her place tonight!” At the word “her” she practically hissed, her tone full of malice.
“GET...ME...OUT...OF THIS!” I yelled.
“Oh, I’m sorry baby you must really be hurting. Let me make it all better.” Then she pulled out a syringe from her pocket and jammed it into my arm, to which I recoiled and pushed her away from me.
“What did you just.....”
“It’s just a little something to make you feel better. See ya soon at my place!”
“What...what the...” And I immediately felt dizzy and felt my body go limp.
My eyes opened to an unknown amount of time later. Everything was darklit, and all I could really make out was that I seemed to be in some sort of basement. I panicked and tried to move, but found my hands were tied behind my back, and my mouth was covered in duct tape. I was alone, so I kicked my feet and struggled all I could to try and break my constraints.
Moments later, I heard footsteps and in came my batshit crazy neighbor. Once again, she was wearing my clothes but a different outfit. She walked up to me, then leaned in towards me neck, and inhaled deeply.
“MMMMmmm...you smell so good.” I attempted to shout at her but to no avail. “Ohh, sorry here ya go!” She removed my duct tape.
“What the hell! My girlfriend is gonna report you and find out about this.”
“Oh , hush ! You don’t have to worry about her anymore. It’s just gonna be us now!”
“Hah! Yeah right!”
“Well she seemed pretty convinced to me. Especially after I sent her some pics.” She now held up my phone , showing me various pics of her naked on top of me and doing all sorts of sexual things. She even arranged it so you couldn’t tell I was unconscious!!
“YOU’LL NEVER GET...” And she put the duct tape back over my mouth.
“Now, now! Don’t’ go getting yourself upset, dear! If you’re going to be my husband, we need to come to an understanding. You may say you don’t love me now, but you will. You’ll learn to love me. If not, you’ll just have to....adjust. From that day I touched your hair and you said you liked it, I just knew deep down inside there was a part of you that loved me! You even liked my cleaning I did when you weren’t home. We were meant to be. Look what I’ve made for us!”
She flipped a light switch and I was now able to see more clearly. The entire basement area was decorated almost identical to how my house was setup. The placement of everything, the furniture...it almost seemed impossible
“Don’t worry, I’ve made everything so it’ll be just like you’re at your real home! I’ll even forgive you for that whole girlfriend thing, so we can start fresh together. Today is the first day of the rest of your life! The first day that we’ll truly be together.” Then she leaned in further, stroked my hair away from my face, and put her eyes right in front of mine.
