It was the next day after he had asked her to be his date as he waited for her outside of her apartment.
All night, he couldn't stop beating himself up for even considering allowing her to be his date just so he could fulfill his father's wish. If the birthday party hadn't been just a few days away, he would definitely not have asked her.
The sound of someone tapping on the window of his car pulled him out of his thoughts. She pointed towards the handle as she looked at him with a smile. Begrudgingly, he pressed the button to unlock the door.
"Morning," she said as soon as she sat down.
"Morning," he mumbled in reply.
"Someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed today," he heard her say. But he didn't say anything. Instead, he kept his eyes straight ahead as he began to drive towards a mall that he frequented.
"Where are we going?" she asked.
He looked over at her to find her looking at him with a smile. And for a moment, as he looked at her, he felt himself thinking that it was a genuine smile. But he quickly convinced himself that it wasn't. And even if it was, it wouldn't make a difference.
"To a mall--"
"Obviously but which one?"
"You'll see when we get there."
The sound of her chuckling caused him to momentarily look at her again.
"What?"
"I didn't know there was a side of you like this."
"Like what?"
"So testy."
His grip on the steering wheel tightened, causing her to giggle.

"What do you think about this one?" she asked as she stepped out of the dressing room with a red dress. He scanned it and shook his head in disapproval.
"That's not good enough," he told her. She heaved a heavy sigh.
"This is the fifth store we've been to and I've already lost count of how many dresses I've tried on. Can't we just pick any dress?" she pleaded with him.
"No we can't," he replied simply, gesturing for her to return to the room and try on another dress.
Knowing his mother, the first thing she would comment on was the dress that she wore to the party. And although they weren't really a couple, he didn't want his mother to have anything to say about her.
"Marc."
The sound of his name being called caught his attention. He looked up to find Catherine standing at the door of the dressing room as she held onto the back of the dress.
"Can you zip me up?" she asked him. He stood up from his seat and walked towards her. She turned her back to him when he was close enough, allowing him to zip the dress closed. She turned around once he was finished and suddenly wrapped her arms around him.
"What are you doing?" he asked immediately.
She didn't say anything. He suddenly felt his heart beating quickly as his eyes moved from her eyes towards her lips subconsiously. He licked his lips nervously as he found himself focusing on the red color of her lipstick. She smiled, catching him off guard.
"I guess this is the one."
He didn't say anything.
The smile that was on her face suddenly disappeared as she removed her arms from where they lay around his neck. She gently touched one of his cheeks, saying,
"I forgot how beautiful your eyes were."
That comment suddenly broke him out of the trance that he was in as he grabbed her wrist and removed her hand from his cheek. He walked out of the dressing room and over his shoulder he said,
"We'll take that one."
And as he walked towards the cash register, his hand subconsciously clutched on his shirt where his heart was as he felt his heart still beating quickly.
