You’d think that by taking someone else’s body and becoming them, you’d get to know everything about them. All about their identity, their lifestyle, their family and friends, and whatnot. But the cold truth? HELL NO. You didn’t.
This wasn’t something you’d see in zombie movies. A zombie kills someone, eats the brain, and gets flashes of his victim’s life, as it plays through in front of his eyes like a movie. Well no.
In my case, as a demonic possession if you’d like to call it the more unorthodox way, came only with the “possessive” perk. Nothing else.
I had no idea who I was, or what even my name used to be. Let alone anything about who I should have been.
You’d ask me, why the hell did you take possession of someone you don’t know dog shit about? Well, go back to the day before and you’ll find out.
Three words. Out of time.
And as I stood there literally petrified, unable to move, and having no clue who all these people were as they literally busted inside the room with their gazes fixated on me, I forgot to breathe for a moment.
A woman, most probably someone close to him – I presume – approached me with a slight reluctance in her eyes. She wasn’t sure what she was seeing was even real. Let alone touch me, and convince herself I was indeed flesh and blood and not a flicker of her imagination.
I couldn’t describe nor imagine how she felt at that moment. But, considering someone close to her had died just a few hours ago, went into the morgue, and came out alive. Yeah, it wasn’t probably the easiest feeling or situation she would have thought she’d find herself stuck with.
“Cory?” She said with a soothing tone in her voice. Was she calling me by his name? Was his name Cory? What kind of name was that?
I didn’t react. I just kept looking at her emotionless. She approached me even further, with the others stopping right behind her a few steps at distance. She must have been his mother.
“Cory, love. It’s me, mom. Do you recognize me?” She asked on the same tone as she stopped right next to my bed reluctant to touch me.
I swallowed dry at that point. She was his mother.
Last time I had felt a mother’s touch was when I became eighteen. And it wasn’t a sweet mother’s caress, it was a palm. Right over my face, because I refused to greet her guests. Even though, they were coming for my birthday, not hers.
As soon as the woman raised her hand, probably intending to touch me or something, I pulled back.
She was surprised at first, but eventually realized I wasn’t the same. And for sure I wasn’t her son, at least not anymore.
“It’s alright baby.” She said with a slight pinch of sadness on her face. “It’s alright. All that matters is that you’re alive.” She continued as she turned toward the others mumbling something inaudible for me.
It started to become frustrating to not be able to hear them. I mean, I was literally sitting two feet away from her. And I couldn’t hear what she was saying. I heard them talking and whispering closely to each other, but I couldn’t make out a word.
Eventually they all turned toward me, and this time, a girl, and a guy left the crowd approaching my bed side. She had been holding a bouquet of flowers in her hand all this time, while the guy just kept his gaze over me, a mixture of surprise and frustration displayed all over his figure.
She stopped at the bedside putting the flowers on the empty drawer to my left, while the guy followed her from behind putting his arm around her waist as they both turned their attention toward me.
“Cory. It’s us James and Kat. I am your sister, do you remember me?”
Sister? Oh by the gods… I had a sister? And who was he? Her husband? Lover? Partner in crime? I mean, they looked close enough.
“Do you remember James? You two used to get along really well. I met him two years ago, while you were in summer school.” Kat continued talking like I should have known everything she was saying. Heck, even if her brother would have been sitting here, recovering from the accident, I wouldn’t have blamed him for not remembering all this crap.
“I think I do,” I told her without giving it a second thought. “Although I don’t quite remember anyone else in the room.” I finished up as soon as James’ face stiffened even further.
Did you have a score to settle with young Cory here, James? Because you didn’t seem to like me much, at least not as much as Kat said you would.
By the time Kat intended to say something else, someone who looked like a doctor, or someone from the hospital’s staff came inside the room kindly asking everyone to take their leave. Their patient needed rest, not another nudge session.
And as I watched everyone leave the room, the young lady closed the door behind them, but not before my… mother waved goodbye and smiled genuinely.
The nurse made her way toward my bedside checking on some medical records attached to the front of the large bed. She didn’t say a word as she shuffled through the pages, but when she was done; she raised her gaze, and stared at me intently. Shortly after, she smiled.
“Well.” She began as she took a few steps closer stopping in front of the EKG. “You’re recovering quite fast, weirdly fast, if I might add.”
“Excuse me?” I asked her. Although I knew whatever was happening with me wasn’t quite natural, especially my swift and unexplainable recovery, but whatever she had meant with that; well, it hit a nerve.
She smiled again.
“I haven’t quite seen anyone recover so fast, after a near death experience. I might even go to the extent of calling you a miracle.”
“Not sure I am one.” I replied swiftly not giving her the edge of the conversation. She kind of started to bother me with her edgy attitude. Was this how all nurses treated their patients in 2020?
“I have news from Licarn.” She said without hesitation.
“What’d you say?” I asked her baffled as I narrowed my eyes trying to make out whatever expression her face had. The sun didn’t make it any easier, shining right into my eyes from my right.
“Oh, let’s just get rid of the smoke and mirrors, Malachai.” She continued, the accent in her voice starting to sound more than familiar.
Oh… great.
I laid back into the soft pillow at my back, as I sighed.
“Lilith.” I said without much excitement in my voice.
“Took you some time. You’re becoming sloppy.”
“What are you doing here?” I asked her, as she made her way toward the windows, engaging the shutters to dim the light in the room.
“As I said, I have news. Why else would I be here? I mean, look at me,” she said looking down at the young nurse’s body which she was possessing. “She probably goes to the gym twice a week, and works out until her tongue hits the floor. And then she refrains from food for the next three days.”
“I got it. She’s skinny. Get to the point.”
“Oh? Did I strike a nerve?”
“The news.” I told her a bit frustrated.
“Oh, my poor Chai. You look so fragile, and defenseless.”
“You’re not so different yourself.”
She made a grimace.
“Is this how you treat your fellow friend? Aren’t you happy to see me?”
“I cannot see you. I am talking with a possessed body. And we aren’t friends, I thought you knew that.”
She laughed.
“Just toying with you. I love it when you’re angry.”
“Can we get to the point, so I can get back to whatever I need to do, and you can just go?”
“Of course love.” She grinned as she approached my bed side. Shortly after, out of nowhere she grabbed my arm swiftly laying down as close as our faces could feel each other’s breathes.
“We caught trail of the one you’re seeking.” She began whispering. “He was last seen somewhere in this wretched city. A week ago.”
“And they decided to tell you this, why?”
“No reason.” She played it cool, rolling her eyes. “Anyhow. You better get in shape. This meat suit of yours,” she put her fingers on top of my chest. “Reeks of death. Although,” she began trailing down toward my stomach as she held on to my arm with her other hand. “You’ve chosen well. The guy is hot. I’d take him home.”
“Are you done?” I shoved her off, surprised by my own strength which didn’t seem to be present a few minutes ago.
She didn’t take my move lightly.
“Watch out Malachai. You’re not in Edom anymore. You might get yourself hurt down here.”
“Thanks for the news. I’ll manage.”
“Suit yourself honey.” She said as she started walking toward the door. “Oh,” she stopped right as she put her hand on the knob. “You better start doing whatever you need to do, your clock’s ticking.”
But before I had any chance of asking anything else, she left, slamming the door behind her.
Fucking bitch…

The day went by faster than I had imagined it would. Having a television, snacks and quite some good varieties of food at my disposal managed to get me through the boredom I had to face.
It was almost around 11 P.M. when I heard yelling and a few nurses running down the corridor outside. Shortly after lights lit up at the end of the hallway right outside my room.
I saw a pair of doctors running down in front of my door. There seemed to be an emergency of some sort, but I couldn’t really make out what was happening from inside.
So, I decided I’d find out.
Closely to the evening, like a few hours ago, I had managed to regain my body’s strength; it felt like a rush of adrenaline at first, but then I realized I had the strength and fortitude in my muscles to lift myself up from the bed and walk around like a normal healthy person would.
Even my wound seemed to have cicatrized and began to heal. This would have been yet another medical miracle the doctors would be baffled with.
Cory, the miracle kid who recovered from a deadly car crash in less than 2 days.
And as I made my way toward the door, I stopped in front of the window peeking outside. There wasn’t anyone around, although the voices which I’ve heard before seemed to come from the right end of the hallway.
I opened the door, slowly, as I stepped outside.
An older woman was just making her way back to her room as she saw me leaving mine. She stopped in her tracks turning around a bit. She looked at me, but didn’t express any emotion. She then turned toward the entrance of her room and shut the door.
Okay…? Polite.
I started walking toward the source of the noise, but as soon as I got closer, two nurses appeared out of nowhere and of course they both saw me. With their eyes narrowed and surprised to see me standing on my two feet without crunches or anything to support my weight, they started running toward me.
In order to provide assistance, I had hoped.
“Mr. Brock!? What are you doing out here? Are you looking for someone? Are you alright?!” The blonde one started bombarding me with her questions.
“I…I am fine.” I told her, not sure how to answer.
“Please, get back in your room. It’s almost midnight, you shouldn’t be standing, let alone walking!”
“I said I am fine.” I told her on a harsher voice than I had planned it to sound.
Her face became expressionless and she didn’t say anything else. Her colleague turned to look at her, but she wasn’t quite sure what just happened with her.
“Come Jen, he’s fine.” The blonde spoke up, grabbing the other nurse’s hand as she started walking by me.
“But… but, Allison!”
“He’s fine, Jen.”
I froze for a second, trying to make out what had just happened when it clicked.
I did that. I made her obey my words. Did that mean, I was regaining my powers? Already?
As I continued making my way down the hallway, I stopped abruptly in front of a large room, two doors standing closed in front of me.
“OPERATING ROOM”. Was written at the top, and as I took a step closer trying to peak inside, I saw them struggling to keep someone alive. And at that moment, when one of the nurses stepped aside, in order to take hold of some utensil I saw his face. It was the other guy, Cory’s friend, the one with the broken neck.
He didn’t die it seemed but was close to doing so. His face was pale, lifeless and he had no pulse.
“Give me 300!” The doctor told the nurse as he readied the defibrillator.
