The bell would ring, yet again, now descending the hallways of a small town school would be the presence of chaos. Lockers opening and slamming, students in celebration as their day would come to an end, books being flung and bags being ripped out, pouring out of the front entrance of large metal doors. Students all over the building would be on the move, done for the weekend, though not all.
In the library typing away on a small computer terminal, Dustin. On the screen, ‘My Review of Sunset Children’.
With a sigh, he’d hold up the book, entering in the basic barcode information, a report for a class.
‘Class: Mrs. Sheltin’s 1st period English’
[“Damn this sucks… why do I have to do another stupid review, not like it’ll get me far...”] he would think to himself.
A sigh, his phone buzzing seconds after as a door was heard opening, glancing forward with a scowl to see several students, Ellie amongst them, all yapping to her, their chatter followed by him looking down.
Washing over, the dread of disgust, rage, [“Jack asses… they can all go to hell!”] he’d think to himself.
Just as they were walking by however, a mild glance over would escape him following the group moving onward by him, not bugging him like they normally would, no, not this day, perhaps in cause of the new girl he would think… then the thought of disgust, [“Pitiful… she’s just like them, the same!”]
His fingers would bend a bit, clutching the desk, shaking a tad bit as a bit of a cold glare escaped him now, following them from behind… at least until he noticed another set of eyes glancing back at him. Upon realization of it, his would immediately go back down in disgust, following his head.
-
“Hey… who was that?” came the question, the doors to the library opening and then closing shut as the group walked, taking a right.
“Pft… just some nerd.”
“Yeah, lives in a fantasy world or some crap.”
“… he was… looking as us… he looked kind of angry?”
“Yeah, that’s just him, he hates all of us the little puke.”
“Well, can you blame him? We all make fun of the kid… haha, who cares!”
“You don’t need to worry about it Ellie, you’ll fit in in no time.”
Looking back, then to the group, “So… why bother him if he doesn’t bother you guys? Sorry for being the new kid with all the questions by the way.”
“Oh don’t worrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry about it. Most people just don’t like him. He’s not social, he’s not athletic, he doesn’t do anything but stay to himself and write his crappy little stories for his internet fake geek friends.”
“A lot of us just think he’s stupid and it’s funny.”
“Ah… alright.”
“You’ll learn girl, just give it some time, you’ll come around and figure out how to dislike that knob like the rest of us.”
“Hey girls, it’s cheer leader practice time!”
“Crap, we’re late!”
“We’ll pick this up next time Ellie, we’ve got to jet before coach goes anal on us!”
Running
Running
Running
The sound of footsteps echoing, leaving Ellie to her own thoughts, a sigh leaving her.
Step
Step
Step
….
The sound of typing filled the library yet again, Dustin quick to get back to work
‘he would then look down, seeing the marker, the thought of how to conduct the murder realizing to him. Marko, grabbing it and the vile of poison, began to pull the back cap off and then a quick dash of the-’
[“No, then people will know why he dies… although, I could get away with it using suspense such as if he will or won’t die. I’ll need to ask Zero about it.”]
Clearly the concept of the book review had been fulfilled or forgotten. Clicking and clacking on the keyboard, the sound of music in his ears, ‘Hail Satan, Archangelo~. Hail Satan, Welcome Year Zero! Belial, Behemoth, Beelzebub.-’
The sound of Year Zero by the band Ghost, to him, a great song… yet somehow something to live by. The continuing of the keyboard clacking, eyes focused on the monitor and headphones in ear now, USB drive in the computer.
[“Ugh, what would be a good follow up?”]
The flicker of light right in the eye, light from the opening of the door in front of the library and then the closing, attention caught as he’d look forward, eyes a little wider as his thinking face was immediately gone, before him the girl.
Silence in the library, with Ellie standing there, hands crossed in front of her waistline, palms folded, standing idle looking right at Dustin. A few seconds would pass before he’d at last let forth a sigh, pausing his music to then pull the right earphone out, “May I help you?”
“Uh… yeah, hi. My name’s-”
“-I know who you are Ms. Ellie,” he’d interrupt, “I keep mild tabs on everyone I don’t know.”
“Uh… right um… I just… thought I’d introduce myself and say hi.”
“Your paparazzi squad had to leave you and you’re waiting on a ride from a family member so you figured you’d come say hi to the reject they no doubt talked about, right?”
“Wait, how did-”
“I know? An educated guess. You’re new, probably don’t have a bus route yet, you’re new so you’ve no reason to hang around, and because you’re new the popular people are going to bug you unless they’re busy.”
“Oh… I see,” an awkward mumble reply back, looking down for a split second, “So… I hear you’re a writer? That’s pretty coo-”
“You don’t have to pretend to like me just to look good, everyone here will just accept you more if you’re an ass like them.”
“I’m not pretending though, I just legit wanted to say hi to you.”
“Well you don’t have to… in a couple weeks, you’ll be one of them and this conversation will be pointless, it happens every time.”
Typing would resume for a split few seconds, clicking and clacking.
“You aren’t that trusting I see...”
A stop of typing and another glance up, “Can’t imagine why when I go to this rat infested school.”
“This place has rats!?”
“Yeah, from seven-thirty to three-thirty or four, Monday through Friday usually.”
Silence
“Oh...”
“Look, I have work to do, just… leave me alone.”
Earbud back in and that’d be that, his music resuming as Ellie would back away, looking upon the ground, right out the door, though not from distress…
