It was definitely getting colder. Winter was on its way. And up in the Montana mountain ranges where New Olympus was hidden, the cold wind was unhindered as it ravaged my face. I had brought the entirety of Hell with me on my quest to oppose the New Olympians, well I guess not the whole entirety. Thanatos whispered of deeper and darker things that were better not mentioned. But you can bet that I brought a limitless number of the dead and deceased.copyright protection4PENANACfbOoEj66J

“My Lord Hades, this will not do.” Thanatos whispered in my ear. “You should not be out in this wind, besides you should be sleeping. Tomorrow is the big day.”copyright protection4PENANAMsQTW6YzpF

“Why doesn’t Aeolus stop this cold breeze? He is the wind god isn’t he?” I complained allowing Thanatos to drag me back into the one tent that was for me and the gods loyal to me. (My army of skeletons did not need to be housed)copyright protection4PENANAqFFT1taCLk

“This is not his wind.” Thanatos explained. “We are out of his domain. Boreas, the North Wind, is the reason for that bitter wind.”copyright protection4PENANATnA4bYIv5O

“Ahh! There he is!” Lycaon shouted as I entered the tent. “I just want you to know that I can’t wait for this battle tomorrow.”copyright protection4PENANAeRh5KdbJNA

I nodded to the wolf god and took my seat that the large circular table that filled up the room. Filling up the nine other chairs besides me were the gods, goddesses, and Titans that had joined my campaign against New Olympus. Sadly, not all of them appeared as bloodthirsty as Lycaon.copyright protection4PENANAodg46iyhUj

“May I suggest that we review the plan for the battle?” Thanatos muttered. “Just so everyone is clear.”copyright protection4PENANACNGcSSaBof

“Yes, I think we should.” I muttered my assent.copyright protection4PENANAqC7HISVTCI

“Very well.” Thanatos said. “Now, the ultimate goal is to take the city and…eliminate Zeus.” He whispered those last words, it would be better off if some things were said more quietly, not like it made it any less treasonous.copyright protection4PENANAu1VL623EjX

“Yes, but it would be difficult to do this if they are holed up in that mountain fortress.” Persephone finished the thought for Thanatos.copyright protection4PENANAYVLF7ExifW

“Exactly.” Thanatos said, nodding in agreement. “So we must draw them out.”copyright protection4PENANAyFzFnhyiba

“And that is why we have this very large horde of dead people camped right under their nose.” Prometheus said gesturing to the countless masses of soldiers milling about outside in the wind.copyright protection4PENANA0GbWrhYuWi

“Again you are correct.” Thanatos pressed on, his lips curled in a faint scowl of annoyance. He was frustrated with their interruptions, and they were frustrated with him constantly going over the plans. “But drawing the gods out won’t do any good if all of us sit here on this field with these skeletons.”copyright protection4PENANAsUdeAlS7D8

“So some of us are going into New Olympus.” Nemesis almost purred with excitement at all the revenge she was about to have.copyright protection4PENANA4cNDSaUqt6

“While certain others stay here and dance with any Olympians that venture out.” Lycaon snarled, showing his quite prominent fangs.copyright protection4PENANABuMNqd5pH2

“Yes, now that we have the first step down, we will move onto which of us will be fighting where.” Thanatos managed to grab hold of the speaking stick. (Figuratively of course) “Lycaon, Prometheus, and Menoetius will command the undead. Hekate will use her magic to make herself appear as Blade, that way those on Olympus will not notice his absence. Aeolus will use his winds to safety transport the real Blade, myself, Persephone, Calypso and Nemesis up into the city.”copyright protection4PENANAHaWVowggEU

“Cerberus too.” I ordered. I had grown quite fond of my three-headed watchdog. “I would feel better with Cerberus up there too.”copyright protection4PENANApI6cmYngoR

“Alright, Cerberus will come with us to the top.” Thanatos conceded. “I assume that not all of the New Olympians will venture down to the battle, but most of the minor gods and goddesses will, so the mountain should be relatively unguarded.”copyright protection4PENANAm0l8NMmTb4

“Yes, I imagine that we will have no trouble taking the mountaintop.” Persephone muttered. “Then, when the city is fallen, we can turn our attention to those gods that are fighting down here. We will be able to surround them. I am not naïve enough to believe that Zeus or Ares or the other Olympians would surrender, but many of the lesser gods should lose heart when they realize what we have done. Without their support, it will only be a matter of time until the last Olympian falls.” She said.copyright protection4PENANAVTeSOCp5T3

“We don’t have to kill them all.” I reminded the group as a whole. “If any of them surrenders, let them. Besides Zeus, he will not be given mercy. But other than him, I would prefer to have less bloodshed.”copyright protection4PENANAZiM5v83Tps

“Spare them?” Nemesis said confused.copyright protection4PENANAKMs5VgSh94

“Yes, forgive.” I told her. “That’s probably something that the goddess of revenge doesn’t understand.”copyright protection4PENANAl5XzXMcmR5

“Are you insulting me?” She asked. “I will get the last laugh. Revenge is a certainty.”copyright protection4PENANAqQodWTl0ML

“You ever heard the saying ‘He who seeks vengeance must dig two graves’?” I asked pointedly.copyright protection4PENANAsxxVDscvJl

“Yes.” Nemesis muttered. “Two graves, one for his legs and one for his torso. Because I will cut him in half.”copyright protection4PENANAz5qxEojRKb

“No.” I said shaking my head. “Just no.”copyright protection4PENANAXa2lnYfJY2

“I think we are done here.” Thanatos said. “Sleep well tonight, tomorrow we commit treason against the king of the gods. And try to stay out of this wind.” With those words the others rose from their chairs and vacated my tent, except Cerberus who was sleeping on a pillow in the corner.copyright protection4PENANAurz2mcvyIf

Not really wanting to go to bed yet, I wandered outside and resumed my stargazing. In the darkness I could just see the faint glow of light that was New Olympus. But the mountain was tall and it was a very small glow. So I turned my eyes to the stars. I was a city boy, and being a city boy I had never really seen the stars. I mean they were there, but never very many or very bright. But out here in the wilderness, with only the faint glow of Olympus, stars were all I could see. They were everywhere and anywhere at the same time. I was able to make out a few of the constellations that I knew.copyright protection4PENANAUhklOZJ7Qt

“It makes you wonder doesn’t it?” I turned around and saw that Calypso was standing behind me also looking up at the sky.copyright protection4PENANAjNEl91jpKi

“Wonder about what?” I asked confused. Calypso walked the few remaining feet to be at my side.copyright protection4PENANArfJ1h5eMEW

“The stars.” Up close I could see the tiny reflections of the stars twinkling in her eyes. “They are so beautiful and majestic.”copyright protection4PENANA2ydmU2lDac

I tore my eyes away from her and forced myself to resume studying the stars. “I’ve never seen them so bright before.” I admitted. “Where I come from, the stars are always being outshone by neon signs and car headlights.”copyright protection4PENANA7t0LOaM8zx

“That is very sad.” Calypso muttered quietly. “Where I come from, the stars are the only thing I have.”copyright protection4PENANAq1N924fhRT

My eyes fell from the sky and landed on her again. “What do you mean?”copyright protection4PENANAdTsrgntC1D

Calypso sighed. “Do you know who I am?”copyright protection4PENANAO87PUVZH3z

            “Your name is Calypso.” I offered.copyright protection4PENANAetA1DD6SUY

“Yes, I am called Calypso, but I meant do you know my story?” She asked me again.copyright protection4PENANAM8Sfz8C2KD

“Umm, no. Greek Mythology isn’t my strong spot.” I admitted. Would she be offended that I didn’t know her? Would she think I’m stupid for knowing practically nothing about who I was now, or much of the Greek myths?copyright protection4PENANAGzMNpGJonM

Calypso nodded understandingly. “I’m not the most well-known of figures. My father was the Titan Atlas, do you know him?”copyright protection4PENANAYBgzDUcKN7

“I know what an atlas is, but not anybody named Atlas.” I felt really stupid at this point.copyright protection4PENANAIzfAPOJrRt

Calypso smiled. “He isn’t very well known either I guess. Anyways my father was a Titan. During the Titan-Olympian war he naturally fought on the side of the Titans, as did I.”copyright protection4PENANA5y3Rmsy5RV

“You fought for the Titans?” I wasn’t really so surprised that she fought for the bad side, after all I could be considered a bad guy for attacking Zeus, I was surprised that she looked as young as she did being as old as she was.copyright protection4PENANASPx8ob3BVQ

“I didn’t not actively fight, but I supported them in the war.” Calypso acknowledged. “I could not go against my own blood. Besides you have to remember, at that time the gods were the rebels and traitors. I thought I was on the good team.”copyright protection4PENANAIDqXefMXHE

“What team do you think you’re on know?” I asked.copyright protection4PENANArMduEzWcFN

Calypso smiled. “I was young then. I was not so wise. Before my punishment, I thought good and bad were different. I thought they were water and fire. Black and white. I did not think good could be bad, or that bad could be good. Now I know. I have learned many things in my many years. This time around I see that there is no good teams, and no bad guys.”copyright protection4PENANA8xDFG2QJDL

I was silent. Calypso’s words really made me think. They really made me wonder. There was no such thing as good guys and bad guys. She was right, this world rarely dealt in absolutes. Calypso had just given me a million years worth of advice.copyright protection4PENANAzlpZjEf6BW

“I am sorry.” She said stepping closer to me. “I did not mean that Zeus is not a bad guy. I did not mean to make you question your cause.”copyright protection4PENANAL2JYxnyuAd

“No it’s not that,” I told her, “it’s just that you look so young, and yet you know so much.”copyright protection4PENANAhIKVorXeaA

Calypso blushed and looked away. “Technically I’m not very old.”copyright protection4PENANA0KWqKf4ZmG

“Oh, I know. Gods age differently.” I told her.copyright protection4PENANAW7JF5g3EKD

“Well yes, but that’s not it. You see after the war, my father was forced to hold up the world, and I was banished to an isolated island.” Calypso told me. “The Olympians were hesitant to actually do me any harm because I had not actively fought, but neither were they willing to pardon me. So I was put on an island by myself, to be forgotten. And on my island things were different than they are here. Things like time.”copyright protection4PENANAR2mCXK3VYe

            “Time was different?” I asked.copyright protection4PENANAwZYspJItI4

“Oh yes, many other things too. One time a man washed up on my island, his name was Odysseus. He was on my island for a week, but when he came back seven years had passed in this world.”copyright protection4PENANA9EbTkh9nVU

“So, you’re not millions of years old?” I asked.copyright protection4PENANA1MWnoU7sP6

“I do not know how old I am.” Calypso said. “Time was not a constant on my island, nothing was. Except the stars. No matter what was happening to my island. Night or day, hurricane or blizzard, the stars were always the same every time they appeared.”copyright protection4PENANAGm6EOvnwZ6

            “That sound’s terrible.” I said consolingly.copyright protection4PENANAB9LM253btZ

“Honestly, the worst thing about it was the loneliness.” Calypso was looking up at the stars. “It would’ve have been a paradise if I had but one friend to face it with me.”copyright protection4PENANA5uL2RaWZDM

I had lost my family and grown up with nobody to watch my back. But there was not one day where I had been truly alone. There were always other people sharing my world with me. But Calypso had honestly been only in her own world. Not even one other person in sight for entire lifetimes. That put everything in perspective for me. I had grown up thinking that no one had it worse than me, that I had the hardest life ever. But now I knew that that wasn’t true. Calypso had just shaken the very foundations of everything that I had thought that I knew.copyright protection4PENANA6j8cYXImuH

“Well, maybe if fighting Zeus doesn’t work out for me, you could give me the tour of this island.” I offered.copyright protection4PENANAt5ReRTkV5N

Calypso smiled. “Maybe, but you’d have to get used to seeing the stars first.”copyright protection4PENANAUbiGdaRaau
