“I’m open!” the boy shouted. The quarterback threw him the ball, and the boy ran a few yards before running headlong into the safety.copyright protection20PENANAiJ1jvVx3e2

I was sitting on a park bench just watching the neighborhood kids playing football. A couple years ago, that would’ve been me and the guys. But now, in high school, we were above playing in the park. But I had never outgrown it. I had never stopped coming here, although the reasons behind my visits had changed drastically. I used to come to the park to have fun and meet with friends, now I come because it was my only safe refuge from the war going on in my house. Mom and Dad constantly fighting, they had been doing this for about six months now. We all knew the marriage was over. It was just a question of when, and who would get custody of me. I tried to pretend that I didn’t notice it, but they fought everywhere and over everything. It was enough to drive me from my home.copyright protection20PENANA8tigMdwUK2

Now the house I used to live in was just the place where I slept a few nights a week. My home had become the park. I did my homework here, I relaxed here, and sometimes when they were really fighting I would sleep here too.copyright protection20PENANA9lScXcQg8A

But right now I was just enjoying the sunny day. It would be one of the last ones this year. I really don’t know what I’ll do in the winter. I can’t spend a snowy night in the park. I could move into a friend’s house. There were offers of just that, but I didn’t want to let people know how bad things really were.copyright protection20PENANAgrjhKPdiSs

“Whatever.” I muttered to myself. I’ll figure it out when it happens. I always had.copyright protection20PENANAk1VDhHROCB

“Beautiful day.” I turned around and saw an old woman standing behind me with a little girl. The old woman had deep grey hair pulled back in a bun and more wrinkles on her face than I had freckles. And I had a lot of freckles.copyright protection20PENANAQLXJXUVNb3

“Hello.” I said. Trying to be polite.copyright protection20PENANAosuIJfxXxq

“Hi!” the little girl said loudly. “My name’s Demi.”copyright protection20PENANApRrlvJ2nxF

“Hey Demi.” I said. Demi looked no older than eight. She had curly brown hair that completely covered her forehead.copyright protection20PENANAYoqW7nQ2b1

“Are you Deon?” the old woman asked.copyright protection20PENANA6AtBidQQbn

I looked up at her. “Yes, who are who?”copyright protection20PENANAgBfIWLsZ8Z

“My name is Hestia. And that is Demi.” The old women said.copyright protection20PENANAE7o43vsTxE

            “What do you want?” I asked.copyright protection20PENANAVEeogxC6nO

“I just want to talk.” Hestia said. “I want to get to know you.”copyright protection20PENANAuEpKmlvPlD

Demi tugged on Hestia’s shirt. “Is he the one?”copyright protection20PENANAPZKd4NIxGg

“Hush now.” Hestia said quietly.copyright protection20PENANAbCUq1aYDhl

“The one?” I asked. “What does she mean 'the one'? What do you want?"?”copyright protection20PENANArM0Rwnd1cy

“Little Demi just wanted to know if you were the one we were looking for.” Hestia explained.copyright protection20PENANAE1ypeCcWaT

“Why were you looking for me?” I asked. I stood up. I was very confused at this point.copyright protection20PENANAclv7MwiKaA

“We need you.” Hestia said.copyright protection20PENANA6Cm7tSuHUG

            “Why?” I asked.copyright protection20PENANAfzHNYVqbSA

“I can’t say until you agree to help me.” Hestia said.copyright protection20PENANA44WAcJ7uui

            “She’s a nice lady.” Demi assured me.copyright protection20PENANA5BVrIpkc6e

I guess the old lady just needed someone to carry her groceries in or something. “Yeah ok.”copyright protection20PENANASlNA9MwAXo

“You’ll have to commit to this cause.” Hestia said.copyright protection20PENANAb2s7DFRKal

“Yeah I can commit.” I said. Great, I’ll be helping her all day. Oh well, I wasn’t doing anything anyway.copyright protection20PENANA3fXYGFo1Su

“Good. This way.” Hestia said walking away.copyright protection20PENANAfLQ3lZPRAN

            “Where are we going?” I asked.copyright protection20PENANAfLPISsnKdx

            “This way.” Demi pointed.copyright protection20PENANA6gN3fuIDvA

“Come. I will explain on the way. There is one more we need.” Hestia said walking away.copyright protection20PENANA8KmYOHYDzy

            “What’s going on?” I asked.copyright protection20PENANAqPjgxcIVWW

“You are going to be a god.” Hestia said.copyright protection20PENANAt2dg5tKO6f

            “I’m a goddess.” Demi said proudly.copyright protection20PENANApf0LePtct2

“A god? Did you say god? I'm going to be a god? Is this a joke?” I asked not believing what I was hearing.copyright protection20PENANALTR5aphTle

“It mostly certainly is not a joke.” Hestia said. “I am Hestia the Greek goddess of the hearth and home. And I am here to take you to New Olympus.” Hestia declared. She seemed to swell as she said this, like a puffer fish.copyright protection20PENANAPOh25nvQbC

I took a step back from her. "Greek goddess? Seriously lady, what's going on? Where is this New Olympus and why are you taking me there?"copyright protection20PENANA6BS6n6VRjp

Hestia pulled a mirror out of her bag. “Look well.” She said holding it up to my face.copyright protection20PENANAT4jL9tbrmw

I studied my reflection in the mirror. I saw my face, with its numerous freckles and golden-green eyes. Then my eyes flicked up to my hairline and I saw the black stubble that was my hair. Then I noticed the crown on my head.copyright protection20PENANAFbkWepkKfw

“What?” I asked. My hand went to my head, but there was no crown. "Crown?" I asked looking at Hestia.copyright protection20PENANAnm7fsvlomE

“I’m taking you to be crowned a god. It's really not that complicated.” Hestia said putting away a mirror. “Now follow me and no more questions.”copyright protection20PENANANfJ61SAcjW

“Come on.” Demi muttered offering her hand to me. I took it and allowed her to pull me along.copyright protection20PENANAIZ83Wntg7J
