I fidgeted a bit as I debated whether or not I truly should ask this boy for help. My pride was telling me no and yes at the same time. On one hand, I didn't want to ask anyone for help, but on the other, I knew that I would only end up losing if I didn't. So I took a deep breath, and I asked.copyright protection3PENANAjNP2j8ttW7

"Can you tutor me in math?" I said quickly, wanting to get the words out of my system before I could stop myself. copyright protection3PENANAb4Ck12OgQh

"I'm sorry, what?" Yoav said in a completely shocked tone. I didn't really blame the guy. After all, his only impression of me so far was a grumpy blind girl. copyright protection3PENANAG8JgaQoovq

"What are you, deaf? I asked if you could tutor me in math."copyright protection3PENANAFPdvRxDl0A

"B-but why? Why would you need a tutor?" I sent him the most accurate glare I could, though who knows how far off-target I was. copyright protection3PENANAtcE5wF8lWY

"Because I'm blind, you damn fool."copyright protection3PENANACC6mThciFI

"But you're in school, aren't you? Doesn't that mean that you're able to do everything you need to do?"copyright protection3PENANAIlxWQptuKu

I was just opening my mouth to answer when an annoyingly high-pitched voice called my name. "Hana! I hear you ran off another guide! I'm not even surprised, really. After all, you're always grumpy and snapping at everyone." My eyebrows twitched in annoyance.copyright protection3PENANA4eGJjdpryl

"That's none of your business, Grace. And I didn't drive Allison off, we just simply didn't work well together."copyright protection3PENANApaXvwRNJ9t

"Sure, you just keep telling yourself that. Maybe then you'll finally realize that you've been lying to yourself for years and that you should just leave this school."copyright protection3PENANAsRO0OFphaa

"Grace, honey, my grades are higher than yours ever will be. Unless that changes, I'm not leaving until either this school shuts down or I graduate. Now can you please leave? The sound of your breathing is making me nauseous." Grace scoffed, but I could hear her heels clicking as she stalked away, probably going off to sit with her friends.copyright protection3PENANAMfotYIGn9e

"Who was that?" Yoav asked in a surprised and potentially-awed voice.copyright protection3PENANAIyoG4VxSEG

"Ignore her. She's just a jealous bitch who can't balance a chemical reaction to save her life."copyright protection3PENANAl7ya7mPwE0

"Well, can you?"copyright protection3PENANAHrf6UdOAAX

"Of course. Now what were we talking about before we were very rudely interrupted?" I casually poked around on the table for a brief moment before my questing fingers found the round, fuzzy object that I'd been searching for. copyright protection3PENANAPjweZB9xtO

"I was asking you why you'd need a tutor for math because if you're in a regular school, doesn't that mean that you can take all the classes successfully?" I took a bite from my peach and chewed thoughtfully. They were actually good today; crisp and tart, just how I liked them. copyright protection3PENANAdOVMY28OzN

"Well, see, that's kinda the thing. I can do almost everything without a problem, it's just math that's the trouble."copyright protection3PENANAOhe4o9hcJS

"Why's math the problem? Why not history or languages?"copyright protection3PENANAazbHNbjXIM

"Because I can memorize dates, I can memorize grammar, and if that fails, I always have all of my textbooks in Braille. I take all of my exams orally, I just can't understand math. It's the one thing that can't be explained to me through words." I could practically feel doubt and curiosity coming off of Yoav in waves. copyright protection3PENANALWBHIAKRpk

"And what makes you think I can help you understand math better? How do you even know I'm good at math?"copyright protection3PENANAEeBTiZ2zcM

"You don't have to be good at it, you just have to understand it."copyright protection3PENANAsnlE49Pn6y

"And what if I say yes?" Yoav's voice was temporarily muffled as he placed food into his mouth.copyright protection3PENANAaSuLzdmk4L

"Then you come over to my house after school a few days a week and walk me through what we've learned in class. If it's not getting any sort of compensation that you're worried about, I can help you with any other classes." There was an audible pause in the boy's breathing.copyright protection3PENANAEJZfChfERs

"You don't seem like the kind of person to be so giving. What's the drawback here? What are you hiding?" copyright protection3PENANArkPMYUWOh2

"You were much more tolerable back when you were quiet," I muttered.copyright protection3PENANAmsURdu4AO8

"That was this morning. And once I'm comfortable with someone, I'm fine. Now answer my question." Now it was my turn for a pause. copyright protection3PENANAlsRlIuDY9v

"You may or may not be getting me out of a bit of trouble with my parents. Satisfied?"copyright protection3PENANAqAPgnOajCs

"Fine." Another pause. "Do you happen to be good at Japanese? 'Cause that's my language class this year, and I'm absolutely terrible at it." Based on the tone of Yoav's voice alone, I would have said that he was much smaller than he actually was. He sounded a bit like a nervous freshman straight out of middle school and not at all ready to face the world of high school.copyright protection3PENANAmZUgQ8LUIz

"Actually, I speak it fluently. My parents were Japanese, so I grew up speaking it. I obviously can't help you with the characters, but I think I can be forgiven for that." I never really figured out whether or not Yoav picked up on the key word in that sentence, but it didn't really matter, because soon we were shaking hands and heading off to our respective classes.copyright protection3PENANA342VpKp2Jy

At the end of the day, I waited in the front of the school as I always did, listening for the distinctive sound of my dad's engine. All cars, even the ones that were the same model, have a unique sound to them. A slightly higher-pitched brake, a faint whining of the wheels, a creaking sound from deep within the car. I doubted that anyone else noticed, but it made me feel sort of happy inside that I could have this little thing to myself when so much else had been taken away.copyright protection3PENANAxa9nqwbAQO

Amid the sounds of other cars pulling in, I finally heard the sound I'd been searching for. In the case of my father's car, it wasn't a case of an odd sound. Rather, it was the absence of all odd noises within the vehicle. His car always moved like a stalking cat: silent and deadly. I'd almost been run over it a few times, actually."copyright protection3PENANA3cNXtE5eyO

There was a soft clicking noise as I opened the door and got in the front, slinging my bag and cane into the back before fumbling for the buckle. copyright protection3PENANANCSQxiBXlk

"How was your day, sweetie?" Dad asked as he pulled out of the school's pickup circle.copyright protection3PENANAwSuFgVcsw2

"Fine." I finally managed to buckle myself in and relaxed a bit.copyright protection3PENANAgze4wHICWh

"Did you make any friends? Lose any? Did anything interesting happen?" My dad was always like this, always trying to know everything he could about my life. And another thing: he always managed to have such an infernally-cheerful tone to his voice.copyright protection3PENANArJTjArCboX

"Nothing much happened, Dad. It was just a normal day." I turned my face in the general direction of my window so that he wouldn't be able to see the expression on it. I'd never really been an especially good liar.copyright protection3PENANAvUQ0A6VMyr

"You talked to someone new, didn't you?" There was a certain teasing tone in his voice that made me give in to him. I swear, he's some sort of sorcerer or wizard.copyright protection3PENANAPP04TxMBaI

"Maybe I did, maybe I didn't."copyright protection3PENANATBsMV2dxdC

"And how did it go? Did you scare them off yet?" I grinned devilishly at that.copyright protection3PENANAuJwkJ7rFU0

"Not yet, but there's plenty of time for me to work on that." He reached over with a hand and ruffled my long hair.copyright protection3PENANA6JQ7NKFAmP

"That's my girl."copyright protection3PENANAifqL1lNfT1
