another rant… (this time i’m just overly obsessive)
I don’t really like doing this. It’s not that I like doing rebuttals on anti-SK arguments, but there are just those things that irk me in a certain way that my obsessive-compulsive character comes out because it wants to straighten some things out.
For example, this one:
Can we just mention the fact that Karin never calls Sasuke “Sasuke-kun" and never uses honorifics except with Orochimaru?
It tells us where her true loyalties lie.
Using an honorific to a person’s name like san and kun means that the two of you are not that close. It’s a form of being polite. If you don’t use honorifics to a person you are not close with, it is intrusive and impolite. You’re overstepping your bounds. People in Japan ask permission to call their friends, girlfriends, boyfriends, and lovers by first name before actually addressing them as such. In Japan, it is considered as an intimate/personal thing to call these people by their first names.
Using honorifics means there is a line drawn between two people’s personal relationship. Honorifics and calling by first name are a big deal in Japan. It’s rude for them to assume that you’re close. That’s in their custom and tradition. They’re that polite.
But then there are special cases, like Sasuke, who never bothers to call anyone with any honorific, he even addresses Kakashi without a sensei. Sasuke is a cool dude, who doesn’t give a damn about honorifics. Well, he just doesn’t give a damn.
Another case is Naruto, he calls Sakura with “chan”, which is a term of endearment for cute children, cute girls, girlfriends, and friends.
And then there’s Sakura, she calls Naruto plainly with his name. She considers them as equal. For another example, she calls Lee with a “san.”
And then there are the fangirls, who always call their focus of love and affection with a “kun.” (You can read shojou manga, there’s a lot of that there. Or as reality as point of reference, this is used between classmates and to younger boys by an older female.) So, there is your “Sasuke-kun” and “Naruto-kun.”
When Japanese people call each other with only their first names, they consider each other as equal. They have a close personal relationship.
So Karin calling Sasuke means she considers them as equal. Actually, the reason why Karin calls Sasuke familiarly has already been discussed in the manifesto.
Karin doesn’t use any honorifics with Suigetsu and Juugo because she doesn’t find any reason to be respectful and polite to them. She was the warden before and they were prisoners. So no need.
Kishimoto has also given his thoughts about these suffixes: (Thanks to the SK manifesto for this.)
c) The lack of suffix.
The reason why I’m bringing this forth is that Kishimoto himself has highlighted this as an important deal; in the form of Sai, Kishimoto has given his thoughts about suffixes and more importantly, the absence of them:
“In order to hasten the development of understanding between yourself and others, the first thing to do is reduce any emotional barriers. For instance, when addressing someone, by using suffixes such as “-san” and “-kun”, you’ll remain distant from that person, never seeing any reduction in emotional barriers.”
“To combat this, one should first take the initiative to stop using such suffixes […] by doing so, one is able to position themselves in a particularly special and close relationship”
So far, there are three girls in the manga who’ve had an obvious crush on someone. Those are Sakura, Ino, and Hinata; and they call their crushes “Sasuke-kun” and “Naruto-kun” respectively; Ino and Hinata aren’t particularly close at all with their respective crushes, but Sakura despite being placed on his same team, continues to call him “Sasuke-kun” even today.
In regards to Orochimaru, if you’re a girl who served under a guy like that and you want to live and survive, wouldn’t you have to be on that guy’s good side? Addressing your scary master that way, wouldn’t something like that get stuck? She isn’t Sasuke so she can’t act like him towards Orochimaru. Again, Suigetsu and Juugo are prisoners so they wouldn’t address him as “sama.”
As for the loyalty, here’s an excerpt from the databook:
- But even as Orochimaru’s underling, Karin feels no obligation towards him. Karin still fulfills her duties out of affection for Uchiha Sasuke. Then Orochimaru dies, and Sasuke stands before her. She sees something in Sasuke… just what would that be…?378Please respect copyright.PENANA0MBpvtlw1c
- Underneath a facade of aloofness and irritability, she bears a dangerous attraction towards Sasuke…
My actual point is: Please don’t throw or make use of words that you have no deep understanding of, Japanese words in particular. They’re more complex than English. It’s just that I tend to get OC to this kind of thing.
