James looked around the room trying to pinpoint where the voice was coming from.
"Don't bother looking for me," Kazav mocked. "I'm in your head, and it's ugly in here."
James started shaking his head, "I finally lost it didn't I? The stress of that attack was the cherry on the cake that is my insanity wasn't it?"
"I can't speak for your mental health kid, but I assure you you're not hearing things. Nope, I'm as real as rain."
"So last night wasn't just some crazy stress dream? You really are all up in my brain?"
"Bingo!" Kazav belted out.
James looked down at where his wound was, "So this was all because of you? How did you do that?"
"You and I are now bound together, mind, body, heart, and soul. What happens to you happens to me and vice versa. But unlike you, I have the power to regenerate your primitive body at a much faster rate than you could on your own."
"So you healed me?"
"Yup, and that's not all! Did you even see how far you kicked that little freak? I'd like to see you get that kind of air without my help."
"What exactly does this all mean? Am I invincible?"
Kazav laughed hard when he heard that question, "Not even close! Here is how this is going to work. The more you use my abilities the stronger our bond will grow and the more of my power will be at your disposal. But I'm not limitless. If you take too much damage all at once even I might not be able to save you. So start small and hone your abilities. Then, after you have built up some more power we can start tackling bigger issues."
"What issues did you have in mind?" James inquired.
"Don't worry about it. There will be time to talk about all that when we can actually do something about it. For now, I recommend you break in your new abilities."
He looked down at his hands, "How do I do that?"
"Just start running around, jump off a building, punch some stuff, I don't know, just do what you always wished you could do."
James ran down to the stairwell and decided his first test would be jumping off the top. It was only 10 feet but he had tried it in the past and even that was enough to send a spike of pain into his heels.
He leaped off and landed on the ground below. He braced for pain but once his feet touched the ground he didn't feel a thing. He chuckled with amazement.
"C'mon, is that the best you can do?" Kazav teased, "Go jump off the roof of the apartment. I promise you can handle it."
James froze at the thought of such a crazy suggestion, "Seriously?"
"Seriously."
James ran up to the roof, 10 flights of stairs, without even needing to catch his breath. Once he got up there and leaned over the ledge he started having doubts.
"Well, I'm waiting," Kazav shouted out condescendingly.
James gulped as his throat tightened from the fear, "It's just that it looks a lot higher than I was expecting."
"Well, then it looks like I'm going to have to give you some encouragement."
All of a sudden James' legs jerked forward and he flung off the roof headfirst. He let out a bloodcurdling scream as he fell which came to a sudden stop once he hit the ground. He lay their motionless, his eyes unblinking, mouth agape.
But after a few moments, he realized he was fine. There wasn't a scratch on him and not a single broken bone. He looked over his body in awe and let out a relieved laugh.
Kazav snickered "Pretty sweet huh? Sorry I had to give your legs a spasm."
"That was amazing!" James exclaimed, "but don't ever, and I mean ever, do that again. Do you understand?"
"Fine, fine, I won't push you anymore I promise."
James jumped up and looked for something else to do. "Can I punch that rock?"
"Sure, I mean, It's not exactly thinking big but go nuts, punch a million rocks for all I care."
He ran over and hit the rock with all his might. He took a tiny chunk out of it without harming his fist.
"Wow, you showed that inanimate object who's boss didn't ya?" Kasav jeered.
"This is amazing! I can't believe this is happening!"
Kazav laughed at James for being so excited. This wasn't even a fraction of what he would be able to do and yet he was so elated.
"Humans are funny," Kazav mused.
James looked out into the street. He tried running once and took the main road but could never make it past a few blocks before being winded.
"I'm gonna go for a run!" He announced as he took off into a sprint.
He cleared block 3, then 4, and on until he circled the main road and headed back to the apartments.
"That was amazing! I don't feel even a little bit winded!"
"It's small potatoes compared to what we will be able to do in the near future kid."
He stayed out the rest of the day as he broke in his new abilities. Elation and excitement ran high for the both of them and the future never felt so bright.
