Hezago’s first year at the Vonellia was, to put it mildly, rather dull. Aside from the incident that led to another student’s spiralling depression and the expulsion of a few others, there were few events worth noting. The initial months were filled with monotonous tasks; Hezago found himself jotting down facts and figures he had long since mastered—some of which he had created—and engaging in other trivial activities that, in his opinion, were rather— no, definitely— pointless.
Mrs. Madernin, the mathematics teacher, often found herself at odds with Hezago. Known for her impulsive nature, she was a woman who seemed incapable of admitting her mistakes, much to Hezago’s irritation. Despite his dislike for her, he was powerless to dismiss her as the school was in debt to one of his governments to the tune of over a billion dollars. Removing her from her position would only complicate an already unstable situation.
In the grand scheme of things, the threat of war with Granada Costa loomed on the horizon, yet it appeared to be a conflict that could be absurdly easily resolved. A decisive military demonstration near the border served as a stern warning, effectively silencing any belligerent posturing from them. Meanwhile, the Borealian council was a constant thorn in Hezago’s side, tirelessly working to thwart his legislative efforts and then conveniently directing public anger towards him for the ensuing issues. In a twist of irony, while they wallowed in their ignorance, Hezago was diligently seeking solutions to the existential decay that threatened their very reality. Although a solution eluded him, he remained confident that, with time, he would find it.
Refusing to be confined to the school’s quarters, Hezago chose instead to reside in one of his many unplottable castles, a decision influenced by the political turmoil that consumed his governments. Despite this, he found solace in the solitude these castles provided. As the year went on, Hezago observed a change in Zack’s attitude; the warmth that Zack directed towards him was becoming increasingly noticeable, something that Hezago found somewhat concerning.
Reflecting on his freshman year, Hezago concluded that, despite the occasional tumult, his experience was tolerable. The prospect of returning for another year did not seem as daunting as he once thought. Perhaps there was more to Vonellia than met the eye, and the coming years will hopefully not hold any surprises.
