The meeting had let out half an hour later, some of the staff were leaving the school or were returning to their classrooms to finish up work they had left, while others stayed back to collect their winnings. Bill and Alice were returning to their classrooms, they still had to finish grading their students work before grades for the semester went in.
"I don’t think I’m going to be able to stand another one of these meetings." said Bill
"You would think that they would get things together, I don’t see why we keep losing staff members.” Alice replied
"It doesn’t help that the principal isn’t telling us anything either, he could at least tell us why they left if anything, we have the right to know."
"What’s this I hear about people disappearing?" The voice came from behind Bill and Alice. They quickly turned around and saw that John was right behind them. He had switched out of his suit and tie and was wearing his Janitors uniform and a big dust mop in hand. "Sorry, I was walking by and I thought I heard you say that some of the staff had disappeared."
"Kind of, not exactly disappearing more like getting fired or quitting with no warning, lately more and more of the staff have been leaving without warning, one day they’re here the next their no sign of them." Alice replied
"I’m sorry, how is this any of your business." Bill said to John sharply.
"Bill, sorry he is just a bit heated up."
"No it’s alright. You two have lost some co-workers in a short span of time I can understand how he feels." John said "But it’s not like they’re gone forever, you could always go meet them at their flats...Right?"
"Well, that’s another thing, you see we don’t exactly know where they live, The Principle should have records on them, but I doubt he would just show us." Says Alice
"And why’s that?” John was even more intrigued than before.
"In his words, he doesn’t like causing trouble for others, but really he just doesn’t want to make trouble for himself. Anything that even smells like trouble he will distance himself from"
"Yeah," Bill added "two weeks ago the school board came to review the schools performance, the suddenly principle came down with an illness for the entire week, when he got back he had a tan!"
"noo..!" John said with a smile.
"Yeah it’s true!" Alice said "One time the principal-"
"One time the principle what..., Mrs. Ackerly?" The Principal had come up behind them. The principal was a scary looking man, while he towered over most people standing at six feet, he was still the same height as John, he had Brown hair that was starting to go grey at the roots, and a dark gold suit with a crosshatch pattern. His face was smooth shaven other than the small beard that hovered over his top lip. The laughter stopped abruptly and silence fell in the hallway.
"The Principal, did nothing..." Alice said softly
"Mmm..., Ah Mr. Smith I hope you have a pleasant time at our school. If you need anything speak with my secretary." He said before walking towards his office, without stopping he added in “Don’t you three have work to get to? I suggest you get them done, And John, one of the toilets upstairs is clogged and some of the fluorescent's upstairs flicker sometimes, please fix it."
“Yes sir.” They all said. They waited till they couldn’t hear or see The Principal anymore before they even thought of saying anything again.
“Well you heard the man,” Bill started to say all frantic and scared. “We’d better get back to work.” And started off to his class A1-11.
“Well it was nice talking to you two, but this place isn’t going to clean itself. First day on the job and there’s already work to be done.” John stated as he started making his way down the hall with his big dust mop leaving Alice In front of her room, room A1-13.
