“They’re not here.” Mira said, when we finally made it to Diamond street.
“Yeah, no kidding.” I replied.
She instantly grew irritated. “We can’t wait any longer. We’ll have to do this on our own.”
I felt a little uneasy without their presence, but I wasn’t planning on backing out at any point. I crossed my arms, “Any ideas?
Her eyes lit up. “I actually thought of a backup plan on our way here.”
“Let’s hear it.”
“Okay. It’s night. I need you to cause a temporary blackout, so the people would get distracted. Guards will come running to the pole that got damaged, considering they’ll figure out that it was from you- which gives us time to travel to the council building and sneak in. I read that the border isn’t powered by the same electricity so it won’t be affected. However, there’s a panel for it in the security room. When we get there, I’ll use air pressure to unlock the door and we can turn off the border and leave the city. If Anita and Vera pinch in at any point, they’ll get the hint.”
I raised my eyebrows. Surprised at her intelligence. “That’s actually less convoluted than the other three plans you proposed previously.”
“Good. But those guards are probably planning something big to kill us. Remember how they suddenly left us back at the cave? So keep your heads up.”
I nodded.
“Do you have it under control?”
“I think so.”
“Then let’s do it. Go to the nearest pole. I’ll meet you there.” She placed on her mask.
It took a while but I managed to force my wings out to fly there. Once I got to the pole, I electrocuted it. The street lights and neon glowing letters on shops went pitch black. People got out of their vehicles, and already began complaining. Some of them pointed out that I was there. Good. Fall for the bait. I waited until Mira arrived. Once she did, we fled while some guards hurried to the pole to fix the problem. I noticed some people were holding flashlights. Suddenly things got too crowded and I could barely move. They didn’t notice our appearances because their lights weren't as strong, which was good because there was no way I was going to get captured. “It’s too crowded. We have to use another route.”
She nodded and we pushed through the people as hard as we could to get some air.
“The blackout is probably going to last about ten minutes,” I told her. “I only shocked the system a little.”
“That’s fine,” She replied, waving her hand carelessly. “If it goes out again, you can just restart it,” Her eyebrows then creased in concern. “This route is kind of far. Do you think you can try flying there?”
I shrugged. “Let me take a look. Get on my back.”
We flew to the roof of the nearest building to get a glimpse of the council building.
I gaped. “That’s so far. I can’t fly all the way there. Plus, my wings still hurt from the tasers.” I noticed that my voice got a little lower in this form, and slightly more rough.
She bit her lip, before shooting a glare. “I can’t let this plan fail. Can you try flying from building to building?”
I sighed. “Worth a shot”

“You know this is going to take forever, right?” I asked, holding her by the torso. Having her on my back made it difficult to fly, so I told her beforehand I had to practically wrap my arms around her waist.
“What else do you suggest?” She asked. “The original route failed-ahhh!” She lost grip and fell.
Dammit! I flew down and swooped her up.
“Sorry,” She breathed. “My hand slipped.”
I rolled my eyes. “You’re always slipping.”
We stopped on top of another roof to take a break. Suddenly, my vision was getting blurry, or something was in my way. I wasn’t well focused, so I automatically reverted back to my original form.
“Things are getting foggy,” Mira told me. “Incoming gas! Get close to me!”
I hurried to her. We were back to back.
“Gas?” She asked. “I don’t get it.”
I coughed. “Sneak attack maybe?”
“Well, they certainly never did that before,” She replied. “Let’s hurry, before the smoke gets thicker. If you can’t fly, I’ll use my legs. I’ve done parkour before.”
“Huh?”
“How do you think I travel to my hideouts?”
“You’re going to use your legs?” I asked. “Isn’t that-”
“We have no choice. Let’s go. Follow me!”
I followed her through the smoke. It was already thick as it is, and it would get worse if I stayed any longer. Before I knew it, I was starting to slow down. What is this? It got to a point where I couldn’t go any faster. What’s with me?.... What’s going on? My thoughts were coming in slow, and my eyelids felt as though bricks were weighing down on them. My thoughts cast away, before my mind was completely blank. Empty. Then I lost consciousness.
