Monica's POV
After binge watching Netflix for so long....I realized I had no one to take me to the cafe. I wanted to give James space after being so rude to him, so he was out. James....and Katie, were probably busy, so my only option was a cab or...Caleb. I didn't like being with Caleb alone, but it meant a free ride. Caleb wasn't like a player or anything like that, it's just that I rejected him when he asked for me to be his girlfriend. It has been awkward ever since. I felt bad for him because I only as a friend. "I won't stop fighting for you Mon. I love you." what was he said last summer. After that, life was different between me and Caleb and we barely talked when we were alone. Mostly short convos like, "Hey, wassup?" or "What was Spanish homework?" (I always asked for homework...)
"Hey...." he answered the phone. "Hey, are you busy?" I asked shakily. "Umm..I'm going to get groceries for my mom in a while. Wassup?" he replied. I smiled thinking about how kind he was to go shopping for his mom, then replied, "Well...I was wondering if you could bring me to the cafe. Can you?" There was an awkward silence, and I was beginning to think he'd say no...but I was wrong. "Sure." he said in a happy tone. "Great. See ya!" I said before hanging up the call. I smiled. That was the longest conversation I've ever had.
I'm coming! Be patient Caleb!" I yelled as he honked the horn loudly. I grabbed my purse, turned off the lights and ran out the house. "It took you that long to look like that...." he said, using his fingers to indicate my clothing. "Girls take their time to do the simpliest of things..." I replied, goign in the car. While driving, we argued about who dresses the best. I was really happy because we could have a nice simple conversation without feeling awkward. At the last stoplight before arriving at the cafe, Caleb checked to see if the fuel was almost empty. My hand was on the dashboard and he touched it. Instead of looking away immediately, I stared right into his brown eyes for a while. In his eyes, I could see love, sadness and hurt. Caleb apologized, "I'm sorry...I-" "No. I'm sorry. My hand was in the way." I interrupted. Fortunately, we had already arrived at the cafe, so I didn't have to face that situation. "Thanks." I said. "No problem." he replied, and drove off.
I looked up at the Deli Cafe sign and remembered the dreadful accident. The thought of itmade my heart sink. There was a vibration from my phone. Anonymous had sent me a text.
A: Monica...
Me: Yes...
A: Well...I had to go to A VERY IMPORTANT meeting....so I couldn't get to meet you.
Me: Oof....I knew it....
A: Well, there is someone else you know.
I sighed and went in the cafe, and saw James unexpectedly. He looked as if he was waiting for someone or an order. "Hey, whatcha ya doing here?" I asked, walking towards him. "I ran away from Jacob's loud music, and came here to relax. What are you doing here?" he replied. I couldn't just tell him, "Oh, I'm just waiting for a person I don't know. He's gonna go all 'Parent Mode' and give me the talk. "Had nothing to do and I didn't wanna stay home all day." I lied. I sat down and waited for a waiter to come.
"Hey, aren't you those kids that were-" the waiter said before James cut him off and stated, "Sorry to interrupt you sir, but we have nothing to do with the accident. The police said she had disobeyed the stoplight and that is the cause of the incident. Anything else you need to know?" At that moment, James sounded so business-y and mature, ya know what I mean. "Roasted!!!" I shouted in my mind. The waiter nodded apologetically and took our orders. In a few minutes, we got our donuts and coffee. "Monica, what's wrong?" James asked considered.
Was it that freaking obvious I was depressed?!?! Was I dumb or actualy smart to tell James what I felt. He was a really nice guy, and he didn't seem suspicious, so I mean I guess I could trust him. "There is this person, Anonymous," I said, "she knows my every move, my every thought and everything I'm gonna do." James was blank for a while. He kinda looked as if he passed out with his eyes open. "Ummm, Earth to James?" I said, trying to bring him back to consciousness. "That's a lot to take in..." he said half to himself. "I know right." I replied with grimacing. "How do you know it's a-" he asked, before he was interrupted by a call. "Be right back." he said leaving the table with a bothered face.
I thought for a few seconds. I kinda regret telling him all that. He probably thinks I'm crazy, or still trying to understand what I told him. I started to develop trust for him even though we started our friendship over a few days ago. James came back still looking bothered and said sadly, "Tell the waiter to take bake my order. I have to go home because....something's going on between my parents and Jacob." I felt a little bit emotional after he said parents, and nodded.
As if my day hadn't been bad enough, a cup came from nowhere and tripped the nurse, spilling my order over me. I angrily get up and leave the cafe. Of course I didn't pay for it if I didn't get what I wanted. Now I looked as if I was jumping up and down in muddy puddles. I decided to jog to the supermarket Caleb went to, and wait for him by his car. Ugh, I had a long way to go. Caleb's car was the other end of the parking lot. I started walking humming the tune of 'A Million Dreams.'
"Here to buy stuff for your cardboard house?" a familiar voice said behind me. When I turned around, it was no other than the guy who threatened me, Jake. "I assume you're doing the same..." I replied cheekily. "I thought I told you to stay out of my way." he said crossly. "I'm not in your way, am I?" I replied smirking, and continued walking. He was absolutely pissed since he didn't reply. The look on his face was hilarious. I arrived at Caleb's car and saw him leaving the supermarket with his groceries.
"You look pissed and coffee-stained..." he said approaching me. "Ya think? Jake over there was "trying" to roast me." I replied, pointing at the douchebag. Caleb, being jealous, gritted his teeth as if he was gratering cheese, because he didn't like when people hurt me... or even tried to. "Hey, can you drive me home now?" I said helping him put the groceries in the car. "Sure Lemondrops." he replied with a soft smile. We got in the car and I stick my tongue out as we drove past Jake.
"Lemondrops is still a child..." Jake smirked, shaking his head. "Shut up knucklehead." I mumbled. I looked at Caleb as he drived and he looked a bit serious despite the jokes he told. His knuckles were white as he clutched onto the steering wheel, and he was driving faster. "Stop Caleb..." I commanded, resting my hand on his. He obeyed and looked me in the eyes. The light brown eyes that carried so much joy when I looked at them, got darker. "What's wrong?" I asked him nervously, not too confident about his answer. he cupped my face in his hands, but not with a lot of force. Then he told me, "I hate when you communicate with other boys, because I know they like. That makes me feels as if I'll lose you. I don't just wanna be your boy best friend, can't we change that?" Of course, I, the stupid Monica Blake didn't know what to say because it was the 2nd time...the same boy...told her about his feelings. But, I just couldn't accept it. I'm supposed to make people fall in love, not love someone. That would just make Cupid life for me impossible. "Caleb, I-" and before I could even say another word, Caleb didn't hesitate to kiss me. I know I shouldn't have but I returned it.
After a few minutes, we both stopped to catch our breaths. I faced the window to hide my blushing face when Caleb said, "Who knew you were such a good kisser?" Immediately, I replied sternly, "Don't you dare tell any one about this or I will kill you and feed you to lions." Caleb rolled his eyes and asked, "Why would I do that?" I smiled and reminded myself what the heck just happened. "Hey, LD," Caleb said, (LD es short for Lemondrops for those who don't know)"you didn't answer my question." We approached a stoplight, I sighed and replied, "I'll tell you that next year..." He replied, "Sure M."
