Hey, my name is Hazelle. Hazelle Caliente. I am just an average high school girl who moved away from Sacramento CA to a small town called Princeton, NJ.
My life changed the day my dad got an offer to work in Princeton and he took it without even talking to me.
How about you just listen to my story instead of me explaining it to you. Here is my life story, it all started on a cool, breezy Wednesday afternoon.
***
"Hey, see you tomorrow okay Hazy?!" Savannah says while she smiles and waves goodbye to me.
"Okay, bye Sav!" I reply waving back to her while walking up the porch to my house and entering our home.
"Hey Sunshine, how was school today?" my father asked me from the kitchen. He is already chopping up the vegetables for tonight's dinner.
"Same as usual. Have an Anatomy test tomorrow and I am nowhere near as ready for it" I answer while setting my backpack down by the door and plop down onto the couch in our living room.
"I can try and help you with that if you want me too." He offers, while putting the vegetables into a small mixing bowl.
"Thanks, but I'll just study with the flashcards that Savannah gave me earlier in study hall." I say while getting up from the couch and head into the kitchen to grab a bottle of water from the fridge.
"No problem, and you can go study upstairs if you want. Dinner won't be ready for a couple of more hours."
"Okay. See you in a couple of hours" I say while giving him a kiss on the cheek, grab my backpack from the living room and head upstairs to my room.
Once I reached my room I set my bottle of water down on the floor next to my small chair that is hanging from my ceiling and grab the Anatomy book from my backpack with the flashcards that are inside the book and start studying. I really need to pass this test.
After an hour of studying I hear the home phone ring. I set my stuff aside and head downstairs to hear it. But before I reached the halfway point of the stairs, I hear my dad pick it up and start talking with whoever it is on the phone. I did get bits and pieces of the conversation.
"Yes, this is him.."
"Woah, really. Where and how much?"
"Of course, I will. Thanks for this opportunity sir."
"Bye."
I rush back upstairs quietly to my room, pretending that conversation never happened and keep on studying until dinner is ready. I can't believe he accepted that offer, without consulting with me!
"What would mom think about this?" I think to myself while letting a couple of tears slowly drip down from my eyes to the hardwood floors.
My mother died a couple of months ago and it was the worst kind of way to go. No, it was not cancer, or a car accident. She was murdered in our own home. I walked in on my mom being murdered and I didn't do a thing to save her.

"No, please! Leave me alone Patrick!!" I hear my mom scream from the inside of the house. I open the door and see a man standing over my mom in the living room.
I just stood there Frozen in fear, I should have ran and knocked that gun out of his hand, but I was to afraid to do anything. Before I could do anything he was walking towards me with the gun pointed at my head.
He wraps his strong muscular arms around my neck, puts the end of the gun at my head and I try to release from his tight grips while listening to the sounds of my mother crying out to him to let me go.
"Let her go, she didn't do anything wrong!!"
"Leave my babygirl out of this!!"
"Shut up or I will pull this trigger and end her life right here, right now!!"
At this point I'm crying and can barely see what is going on. He drags me towards the couch with the gun still at my head. Now we're standing over my now weaken and powerless mother who is still crying at the sight of a man holding her baby against her will.
I don't even know who this man is, but my mom seems to know. I slowly stop crying and try to yell out the one question that I need to know. Little did I know that this question was the one that got her killed.
"Who is this man mother?!"
"Oh she didn't tell you? Well, I'll just answer it for you. I am your father" he whispers in my ear.
He slowly removes the gun from my head and points it back at my mother.
"No, please don't!!" I scream at the top of my lungs.
"I love you Hazelle, I always will my little baby girl" my mom managed to speak out before I heard the sounds of the bullet leaving the gun and eliminating my mom from my life, forever.
He let's go of me and I fall down on my knees next to her and grab her lifeless, limp and cold body and press her against my chest screaming at her to come back to life.
"Mom, please wake up!!"
"You can't leave me here!!"
"MOM...!!!"
***
I shake myself awake from that flashback and bring myself back to reality. Even though that happened just a couple of months ago, it still feels like it happened yesterday. Can't believe that he is still out there, I will avenge my mother. I will not let her death be in vain.
If only I didn't ask that stupid question, she would still be alive today. Her losing her life was all my fault and I will never forgive myself for this. I should be the one that is in the ground, not her. She did not deserve to leave this world so early, not like this.
Want to know the worst part, my dad and her side of the family did not even come to her funeral, even though they were invited. I haven't seen or heard from her family since her death was revealed to them. They never call to ask how we're doing.
Some family they are. Guess it's just me and my dad fighting this out ourselves in our little world. I look back at my wall clock and see that it is almost for dinner to start. So I put my homework away and head downstairs to wash up before we eat.
Once I reach downstairs, I see my dad setting the table for two and turning on the one show we all loved watching together, FRIENDS. I head over to the sink and wash my hands while listening to Ross and Rachel sing to their sweet little baby girl, Emma.
"Did you get some studying done Hazelle?" my dad asks me while walking up next to me and grabbing the bottle of soap that was in my hands.
"Yeah, I did. Hopefully I will be able to pass tomorrow's test" I half-lie to him while grabbing a washcloth for the both of us.
"Well that's good to hear. I hope you pass your test tomorrow."
"Yeah, me too. I hope."
He turns off the kitchen sink, dries his hands and we both sit down to enjoy the meal that he has made for us.
After a half an hour of eating, we clear the table and go into the living room to watch a couple of more episodes and then head to bed. But before I could sit down I hear my dad clear his throat.
"Hazelle, I have some good news to tell you."
"What is it dad?" I ask him, knowing that I probably already know what he's going to tell me.
"The person on the phone earlier was my manager and offered me a promotion. And I accepted right away which was wrong of me to do without talking to you about it. It was kind of a short notice."
"Go on. I understand." I reply back nodding and letting him know to finish this conversation.
"Anyways, he offered me a promotion and I accepted it."
"That's great dad, I'm so proud of you!!" I reply with happiness in my voice.
"Other news is, is that I start next week and it is in Princeton, New Jersey" he finishes saying to me.
I look at him, stopping my excitement in my tracks and process this information that he told me. Did he really just say that? We have to move and he starts in only one week? That is not plenty of time for me to say goodbye to my best friend, Savannah. Why couldn't we leave at the end of the school year?

I take one more deep breath, stop myself from walking and the only thing that I could say out loud, even though I had a bunch of questions to ask, I screamed out "SAY WHAT NOW?!?"
