Every time I close my eyes, I see him. He is always leaning against the wall, and staring at me with amused eyes and a sly smile. I move forward to tell him that it’s enough and that his tricks won’t work now but he just shakes his head and laughs. Just as I begin to notice what a beautiful smile he has or how deep his laughter sounds; my vision fades away to that one night that changed everything between us.267Please respect copyright.PENANAJmImzv3pfe

Chapter 1: The nuisance

Evelyn’s POV:
It was just another one of those days when you wake up and wish you hadn’t. I woke up to the constant bickering that was commonplace in Diaz household, dressed up and found out that I had misplaced my ballet flats and would have to opt for sneakers instead; tiptoed down to the kitchen and decided to forego my nutritional breakfast in favor of some peace of mind; opened the side door to the garage… and got caught. Again.

“Just where do you think you are going, young lady?” asked my father.
I gulped down hard. He had some really tough rules and I broke about three of them already.

“School, dad. You know; the place where kids go and some of them decide to study...” I said.
“Don’t you dare try to be smart; Evelyn.” He said. “I know what good school does. It would be better if you would learn a little respect from that place too.”

I cringed at his tone. This man; my father, was never to be crossed. And come to think of it, it was a lost cause to try and convince the benefits of school to a person who never tried to grace it with his presence. Not that it ever bothered him anyway… he was successful in his field; renowned, respected and people always stayed in either awe or fear of him. Fear? Oh yes. After all; he was the great Roberto Diaz: the biggest problem for the police of California. From drugs to arms trafficking; and from extortion to murders, he had his hand in almost seventy five percent cases. But on the surface of it all, he had never been accused or convicted. Sure, the police had their ideas and suspicions; hell, some even knew exactly what went on, but either they were under the weight of my father’s money or were simply too afraid to do something about it. For the common people though, he was Roberto Diaz: the most prominent businessman of the city.
“I am sorry dad.” I said, well aware that if I didn't apologize soon, my chances of going to school were very thin. It was only a matter of one month anyway… then I would give my finals and my future would be locked after graduation. That is, if he lets me go to the law school as I had it planned.
He nodded curtly and said to me- “ Fine. But I expect you to be home by five. We’re hosting a party tonight and you; being my only heiress, should be present.”

Yeah. Never mind that I may not be interested in becoming your heiress; dad.

I nodded and started moving towards the car. At that point, I didn’t have any idea that things would go in such a direction that I won’t be able to control my own life. My fate.

Later that night, I stood by the fountain; looking around the huge garden in front of our mansion which was packed with people everywhere. As it turned out; the party was being held to introduce some new guy into the business. He’d just come home after finishing his degree from London- though I highly doubt that the Oxford University teaches its students anything about the type of business my father and his colleagues engaged in.
This David guy was still unknown to me as I had been hiding in the library, reading Great Expectations and had, as a result; missed his introduction. But that was before my mother found me and dragged me out of the party where I currently stood; sipping my cold drink.

“ Getting bored?” asked a voice beside me.
I turned around slowly to face the owner of the voice. A young man dressed in white shirt and black suit pants stood there casually; with one hand in his pocket and other holding a beer. His shirt sleeves were rolled to his elbow and for a change; wasn’t someone who wore ostentatious pointed leather shoes. I was about to deny politely, And state that this was my home and therefore, my party and I couldn’t possibly be bored; when I got a good look at his face and did a double take. His hair weren’t typically gelled into a slimy gangster style or carefully combed like a businessman; but a few strands of his raven hair were falling in his onyx eyes. He wore a smirk on his face as he saw me gawking at him.

This was when I gathered my senses and cleared my throat.

“ Sort of.” I answered instead.
“Me too.” He commented; before breaking eye contact and looking straight ahead to where my father stood with his colleagues.
I too looked up front; unsure of what to say next.
“This”- he said; using his half empty bottle of beer to indicate towards the party-“must be a regular occurrence to you, huh?”
I shook my head and said-“ Sometimes”. Then I gave him a sly smile of my own. “Dad pays for my school and I pay him back by being social.”
For some reason; the guy laughed.

“So, this is you; keeping your end of the bargain?” he mused.
“Yeah…” I drawled out. I was beginning to feel uncomfortable with how familiarly he talked to me; like he’d known me since long; when in reality, we had never met.

“If it weren't for this party tonight; what would you have done instead?” he asked me again.
I was beginning to get annoyed.
“Nothing.” I said curtly. “If it wasn't for this silly douche, who has decided to get trapped into this marsh of a criminal business, I would have sat in my room, preparing for my finals or my college entrances.”
On listening to this, he burst out into laughter; annoying me further.
“And just what is the cause of your amusement?” I questioned him sharply.
At least he had the decency to look sheepish.267Please respect copyright.PENANAjjNRgie1EE
“Nothing.” He answered.” Just that the douche who is the prime accused in wasting your precious time is me.”
He extended a hand for me to shake as I stood dumbstruck, cursing my own big; uncontrollable mouth.267Please respect copyright.PENANAgpAU8lIi6f
He smirked at me and introduced himself- “David Capelli.”
