The cool yet warm breeze of the early Summer night filled the air, as Emery laughed softly. This day was special for her in some way, the annual Summer Lights Festival, maybe because it was the place where most of her memories were based upon, or maybe the bittersweet after taste of too much Funnel cake. She followed Harper around, as they gathered at the bonfire each one lighting up a paper lantern. The sky glowed softly, a beautiful sight to see.
As they walked around, Harper shoved a cup of pink lemonade into Emery's face, a wide smile painting her soft brown face. "Em, have you tried this? It's basically sugar in a supposed refreshing drink." She exclaimed, Emery rolled her eyes.
"Right, this is disgusting... But thank you?" She muttered, grimacing after a sip. For the first time in six months, everything seemed right. Perfect, it seemed fine. Her eyes wandered to the couples under the gazebo, dancing to the soft country music. She watched as the little kids played around with their new friends who they would only see this once, and never again. It felt normal, she wasn't thinking about Ian, her brother. She wasn't thinking about how the town looked at her family weirdly. Or the void his disappearance had left.
Tonight it was easy to pretend everything was normal.
"Three tickets left," Harper said suddenly, grinning. "Roller Coaster?"
Emery rolled her eyes, laughing. "You and that damn roller coaster.. I'm in." She muttered in defeat. Harper smiled even more, as they walked over to the roller coaster. And as always, she chose the front row. She knew how much Emery hated those, that's why she did it. As the ride roared into life, the cart started moving. Reaching the climax, and falling down.
"See?" Harper shouted, "everything is perfect!"
Yeah, everything is perfect... Right?
