"Look, I'm sorry okay, "I cried. "I lost track of time. And it's not like I'm hours late, just nine minutes." I held my breath and stared up into my father's face which was pinched up in anger and disgust he looked at me. No wait, looked isn't the right word. More like pierced into my soul and eyes the same dark green color as mine. My eyes hurt from staring into his which had lost all their light when my mother had killed herself leaving me alone with my father. He had been the most loving father, always spending time with his 'baby girl', taking her out for ice cream and picking her up from school. When I had been 12 years old, my mother had killed herself by overdose and my father had been in denial, looking for answers in bottles of whisky. He drank so much that sometimes he would end up slapping me or punching me, blaming me for my mother's death. I swore than that I would never willingly let a drop of that shit enter my body.
My father lifted up the bottle of alcohol and took a big gulp, his eyes never leaving my face as if I would somehow show a sign of weakness. Then my father looked out the window where he saw a blue car parked with the lights on and a boy with golden brown hair and light tan skin sitting in the driver's seat. He turned his eyes back on me.
"Well then, who might this be?" He was mocking me. I cursed inside my head and prayed that my dad wouldn't make the connection. In the car was my best friend, Skyler who had taken me to the movies to get my mind off the problems at school. I had specifically told him to leave right when he dropped me off so my father wouldn't blame anyone for my disappearance. But Skyler being the idiot that he was, always waited for me to get to my room and wave him an okay from my bedroom window which faced the drive way. It was our friendship tradition since Sky new about my father and wanted to see if I made it past my father safely. Sky had forgotten to turn off his headlights which my father had clearly spotted.
My heart was hammering away in my chest and I tried my best to keep my expression neutral but I think I let a flicker of fear pass causing my father to smile wickedly at me and power walk to the front door and out. Panic seized me and I dashed after him calling out for him to stop. He didn't turn around for a second but when straight up to the driver's door and yanked it open. He grabbed Sky with his collar and dragged him out of the car and in front of me. The wind was stinging my cheeks and blowing my bangs into my eyes but I could clearly see the look of terror on Sky's face. His beautiful grey eyes crinkled in fear as he looked up at my father.
"Dad, please. Stop..." I whispered in confusion and he threw Sky against the car and pinned his arm against his throat. Sky gasped for air but my father had other ideas. He lifted his fist and swung it at Sky's face and let him crumple to the ground. I could tell Sky wanted to get up and fight back but her knew that my father would later take it out on me.
"Stop! What the hell are you doing?" I screamed and tried to run to Sky's side but was pushed away my by father.
"Is this the boy you're fooling around with these days, huh?" My father Screamed at me.
"No Dad, it's not like that, please I'm sorry for being late. Just leave him alone...please," I begged my father.
I was afraid to make a move, afraid that he would hurt Sky if I tried anything again. But he did. He reached down ignoring my desperate cries and fighting me off as I tried to come in between them. He lifted his leg and started kicking Sky in the stomach again and again and again. Skylar cried out in pain with every kick, blood trickling down his nose. My eyes were blurring up with tears as I desperately tried to get his to stop. Finally, I couldn't take it anymore.
"I'M GOING TO CALL THE POLICE IF YOU DON'T STOP!" I screamed which got his full attention.
"What did you say to me you little bitch!" He screamed coming closer to me. I pulled out my cellphone and showing it to him.
"Let him go or ill call the police, "I said again, more slowly and clearly this time though I was panicking and screaming inside. My father turned around and gave Sky one more kick, causing him to crumple up in pain again. I winced which seemed to please my father who came up close to me and whispered, "Don't be late again, baby girl, "and then stalked off to the house.
After that night Sky never talked to me again and I realized I blew my chance for ever telling that I loved him.
