If you think your life sucks, then you're nowhere near knowing the definition of a “terrible life.” Let’s do introductions, shall we? My name is Sadie Willson, and I had a great life at the start, but I’ve learned that nothing ever lasts. 4 years ago everything came crashing down, and it was all because of a tragic car accident. My Mum and Dad also known as Lillian and Darren Willson died, and I was only 9 years old. I have a twin brother; we both have dark brown hair like our Mum and light blue eyes like our Dad, but other than that, we are almost nothing alike. He’s 2 minutes older than me and his name is Noah. It hit him even harder than me that our parents had died. We lived with my grandma since then, she was nice, but it wasn’t nearly the same as having Mum and Dad watch us. Right now, I’m 13 years old, I’m in 7th grade, and am a straight A student. Ever since my Mum and Dad died, I started pushing myself hard in school, always trying to get good grades and pass tests, but my brother didn’t care much. In fact, after our parents died, Noah’s grades started slipping, I’ve tried to help him in any way since we’re in the same grade but it only gets worse.
Anyway, I’m going to grandma’s now, my brother’s already home when I get there. “How was school?” I asked “Learn anything interesting?”
“Nah, but can you-”
Before he can finish the doorbell rings “I’ll get it” I say running to the door. Standing outside was grandma, “Where did you go?”
“I just went to get some groceries” she replied
“You okay grann? You sound shaken up” says Noah
“I have a surprise for you Sadie, I promised your mother that I would give you this when you turn 12.” “I know I should’ve given it to you months ago but I was looking for the right time, and that doesn’t seem to come anytime in the near future.” said granns holding out a box.
I stood there frozen in shock as I stared at the dusty old box. A dozen questions floated through my mind but before I could ask any of them Noah asked a question that I hadn’t thought of.
“Why did Mum give it to you?” “Did she know she wouldn’t be alive to give it herself?” he asked.
I cringed at the sharpness in his voice, I knew he didn’t like talking about our parents since it brought back painful memories but the edge in his voice scared me. I knew when Noah got mad, he did things that no one could explain which was why no one tried to bring up Lillian and Darren Willson, in front of him, Noah got mad when others talked about our parents as if they’re dead, which they are but Noah couldn’t seem to wrap his mind around that. He said that Mum and Dad would never leave them alone, and that they would be back soon. But “soon” never happened.
“Noah” I whispered. His expression softened ever so slightly, being the only ones for each other made us grow closer with each other. I turned back to my grann and slowly took the box she was holding. I blow the dust off the box peppering the floor with specks, then run my finger over the top of the box. Engraved on the top were 2 words that made my head spin like crazy “Love Lillian.” I traced my finger over the loopy handwriting, “Did Mum engrave this?”
“Spent hours doing so.” replied grann looking out the window with a faint smile on her face. Then she turned back “go ahead, open it.”
I slowly lifted up the lid and looked inside “Mum’s Amulet” I whispered
