A yawn escaped my mouth as the teacher droned on about the Civil War. It was a gloomy day filled with grey skies that promised rain. I stared out the window as the first few sprinkles decorated the window. “Does anyone have any questions before I pass out homework for the weekend?” The groans in the classroom spoke it all as the teacher shushed them back down. “I’m going to pass them out and this small packet needs to be turned in by Monday for full credit, please remember that.”
Once I received my homework packet I put it neatly into my History folder before putting it back into my backpack just as the bell rang signaling the end of class. “Please remember that Monday is also presenting on your projects so don’t forget any materials you have used!” I’m pretty sure most of the class ignored what Mr. Stirling was saying as they all rushed out the door to make it to lunch.
I followed not too close behind them keeping my head down as my earphones played some random playlist I have on the mp3 player I got for my 14th birthday. I made sure to not bump into anybody making my way outside to my favorite tree next to the bleachers, no one bothered to come out here since they always complained it was hot and stayed inside. I don’t blame them but it makes me feel better to recharge for the rest of the school day since it was quiet any noises you heard were either from the road or birds from up above you in the trees.
By the time school ended i was already exhausted and wanted to get the fuck out of this building away from everyone else. I made sure that i had everything as i walked out the front of my high school shouldering my backpack taking off into a light jog. I yawned again as i walked down the sidewalk not looking forward to getting home or knowing what's waiting for me there.
To put it short i live with my mother and her new husband who loves to drink, no matter what every chance he gets he's drinking. He doesn't actually physically abuse me but he definitely likes to verbally abuse me because he knows if he actually causes a physical bruise he would get blamed immediately. My late father's brother visits a lot checking in on me to make sure nothing too bad is happening.
I love my Uncle very much he's always been there for me especially after my father died. My mom didn't seem to give a lick of a fucking care as she immediately went searching for someone else to fill the empty space in her bed. I guess that's when i really started to hate my mother as it seemed to me that she didn't give two shits about my father, her husband, at all and was just using him until he suddenly passed away.
By the time i made it back to my house my Uncle had just pulled into the drive way "hey Uncle Jake, what are you doing here today?" He chuckled ruffling my hair making me pout up at him "just checking in on my favorite niece, is that so wrong?" I rolled my eyes trying to fix my hair "yeah right, i'm your only niece." we both laughed a little "yeah i can't deny that, you just came from school right?" I nodded agreeing with him as i told him about my day as we made our way to the front door.
The minute we walked through the door i could already see a scowl appearing on Uncle Jake's face seeing the mess of beer cans and trash "if they think i'm gonna let them trash the house like this they've got another thing coming" he cursed under his breath as we stepped further inside. Your staying with me tonight Sammie" i made no objections as i went to my room that wasn't too far from the front door quickly packing anything i wanted to bring.
Just as i exited my bedroom i could already hear Uncle Jake and my mom yelling at each other because of the state of the house. I picked up some of the trash off the floor just as Uncle Jake stormed out of my moms room "don't bother cleaning up after these slobs Sammie, let's go." I didn't argue for i could tell he was really upset so i just nodded and followed him out not even bothering to look at my mother who came out of the room.
"Sammie! Do not go with your Uncle or you are grounded!" I stopped just a few feet from the car as anger boiled in me, i turned towards her to glare as she flinched "you don't get to tell me what to do 'mother', you only care about yourself and your so called 'husband', leave me alone." She threw a tantrum as i hopped in Uncle Jakes care throwing my bag into the back seat and buckling up.
"Ain't she just the perfect mother" the sarcasm was heavy in Uncle Jake's voice i didnt say anything as i stared out the window as we drove down the street. "Look, i'm sorry i just wish your mother would realize what your father left behind for both of you to survive because i'm pretty sure my brother didn't die for your mother to go around whoring herself."
I just shrugged putting in my headphones drowning the outside world out with my music slowly nodding off to sleep.
