We ride through a familiar town. My companion is driving, just like always. They do it because they know I don't like to. The ride is boring and monotonous. All the buildings look the same to me, empty and unremarkable.
We arrive somewhere I remember well, a school I always like to visit. They take me inside, walking down comforting halls with me. I feel my unease fade as we explore. 7Please respect copyright.PENANAG7vDWv8fZM
Gold light shines on floors, desks, tables. The cafeteria is spotless, but empty of food. The classrooms are neat and organized, every chair and paper in their place. The lockers are all closed and clean. We used to guess the combination locks to try to open them. I remember opening one, but there was nothing inside.
They take me to a window. We look out across a grass field that has nothing but a lone soccer ball in it. Kids must have played there, before everything changed.
I feel an arm wrap around my waist. I look to my side, and my companion is holding me close. If I could see their face, I think I would see a smile. I smile too, leaning against them in return.
