These people are not mine,

They all sip from fancy flutes of wine,

And they stare over the rim of their glasses,

Gaze scrutinizing, with the intent to harass.

I do not belong here,

Why can’t you hear it, my dear?

These people titter and giggle, preening behind imaginary fans,

Calculating eyes, whispered promises of unacted plans.

They mock my clothes, my hair, my skin,

Saying “it’s too plain, such a sin.”

The tension is thick enough to cut with a knife,

They are all hungering to ruin my life.

Cameras flash, it hurts my eyes,

This party will be my reputation’s demise.

I smile politely, grasping your hand,

“Dear, don’t you understand?”

But now it’s your time to fear.”

The house is burning,

Nerves have my stomach churning.

It’s their downfall, their poisonous rot leading to their own decay.
