Title and Theme - Monster: A short dramatic play

Cast:

Text/Words/ inner dialog: female voice off stage

Girl: female young disheveled

Response/Call: male voice off stage

Boy: Male same age or slightly older than girl, well groomed

Setting:

Darkened stage, spotlights. Stage let should be a house or room.

Props:

Chair phones

Notes on selection:

The stage should be completely silent. No mics. should be used. Have the voice actors speak from opposite sides of the stage. The emotions should be clearly felt and identified.

{At rise no lights. 50% Spotlight on Girl stage right. Sitting alone, (with phone in pocket) fetal position.}

Inner Dialog: (harsh, bitter) you are so stupid, no matter what you do you will never amount to anything

Text: (sad) Hey can I talk to you?

Girl: (mime texting)

{Lights up stage left, Boy sitting on chair reading a book. Notices phone go off} (Turn off spot light as lights rise)

Response :( interested innocent) Yeah what’s up?

Boy: {mime texting}

Text: I am going to kill myself. I need someone to stop me before I go too far.

Girl: (mime texting)

Boy :{ visibly upset}

Response: No. STOP RIGHT NOW STOP. Tell me what happened. What triggered this?

Boy: {mime texting}

Text: I don’t know, there is just so much pain. Everything hurts I can’t take it.

Girl: (mime texting)

Response: Stop it don’t say that.

Boy: {mime texting}

Text: It’s too late. I am so sorry.

Girl: (mime texting)

Response: NO STOP RIGHT NOW. DO NOT SAY THAT.

Boy: {mime texting}

Text: If it helps I will do it quickly. This is not your fault. I am sorry.

Girl: (mime texting, stand up start to walk out pause when miming texting)

Inner Dialog: “End it now. No one ever cared anyway. Just die and get out of the world’s way.”

Boy: {mime texting}

Response: wait stop please. It will be ok. Stop.

Boy: {mime texting}

Text: It’s too late. When the team finds out just apologize for me.

Response: NO STOP I CANT LOSE ANOTHER FRIEND LIKE THIS.

Boy: {mime texting}

Inner Dialog: (soft tempting) it won’t be hard. Just do it.

Text: I am sorry

Girl: {put phone in pocket. Walk closer to off stage.}

Boy: {act very upset. Mime calling}

Girl: {Stop answer phone crying shaking}

Call: Tell me use your words.

Boy: {talk on phone}

Words: I can’t it is too late

Girl: {Talking on phone}

Call: no it’s not use your words don’t do this you can do this

Boy: {talk on phone}

Girl: {gets back in feta position}

Words: I help i… I …. (voice should be quiet and weak struggle)

Girl: {Talking on phone}

Call: Just breath, use words tell me what’s wrong (strong calm kind)

Boy: {talk on phone}

Words: I can’t it hurts to much I can’t go on (pain should be clear in the voice)

Girl: {Talking on phone}

Call: Yes you can I know you can. (reassuring)

Boy: {talk on phone} (Pause)

Call: are you going to be ok

Boy: {talk on phone}

Words: I don’t know anymore.

Girl: {Talking on phone}

Call: I am going to hang up now but if you stop responding I will call the cops.

Boy: {talk on phone}

Boy: {bring phone from ear mime texting}

Response: Are you ok

Boy: {mime texting} (long pause)

Text: No

Girl: (mime texting)

Response: Do I need to come over

Boy: {mime texting}

Text: No please don’t.

Girl: (mime texting)

Response: Keep answering everything will be fine.

Boy: {mime texting}

{Bring down lights}

Ending one: recommended if drama is for all audiences.

Response: Hey

Boy: {mime texting}

Text: hello

Girl: (mime texting)

Response: How are you feeling?

Text: truth or not

Girl: (mime texting)

Response: Truth

Boy: {mime texting}

Text: umm… have you ever got a really bad cut? And the pain is deep and dark and moves through all of you and takes up everything? Like that

Girl: (mime texting)

Response: Ohh… am sorry

Boy: {mime texting}

Text: its ok that is normal not bad

Girl: (mime texting)

Response: take a deep breath everything will be ok.

Boy: {mime texting}

Inner Dialog: “maybe… maybe he is right.”

Ending 2:

Response: Keep answering everything will be fine.

Boy: {mime texting} (pause)

Response: Hello? Stop. Please.

Girl: {Set phone on stage be sure to have it on vibrate}

Response: Please answer please stop

Boy: {be scared}

Text: Goodbye.

Boy :{ call}

Girl: {walk off stage}

Call: Please pick up. Please you have to stop I can’t lose another friend

(Bring down lights slowly.

Call: no no no {get quieter} please answer pick up. No…… {Continue}

Boy: {more and more frantic.}

(At 25% lighting stop)

(Loud gunshot sound)

(Thump)

Boy: {run off stage implying he is getting help}

(Stage should be silent)

(Bring the lights all of the way down)

(Close the curtain)
