Chapter One

Madeline arrived at the school.

She didn't think about the strange feeling she had.

Whispers from witches in cloaks caused her to stop looking through the glass windows.

She hadn't thought about magic.

The human bus driver, Mr. Gregson, smiled.

'Hop off now!', he said.

And everyone did, including Madeline.

The boy, Caleb Rohmer, was nervous.

He was thinking about the first time he saw a wizard.

'Excuse me, but is this seat empty?', Madeline asked him.

'Yes, this city is weird. I'm Caleb', he answered.

'I'm Madeline', she said.

'There is a war going on', a girl said.

'Between the wizards, and the witches'.

'You're Anna Kane'.

'Yes, my Mom is a witch'.

'I see', Caleb said.

'Madeline', she said.

'Maybe we can talk about the Uprising', Anna told her.

'The one from 1689', Madeline said.

'Yes, you know your history'.

'Yes, I major in it at my Chicago school, before my parents moved to New York'.

Mr. Gregson stopped the bus.

'Everyone off!'.

And, as the children reached for their bags, it was a cold February morning in New York.
