At hearing his name, my heart skipped a beat.
It seemed physically impossible for a name to fit a person so well. It was as if it had been made for him.
The uneasiness and silence that persisted at the library caused me to start sweating in the middle of winter, yet I couldn't figure out why I wasn't just running back home and never turning back.
Finally, the topic that had sparked our conversation was brought up. He placed the book carefully in the centre of the wooden table in front of us.
As he did so, I noticed a beautiful silver ring on his ring finger, which ever so slightly sparkled under the dim library light.
I looked up at him, seeking permission to open the book, and earning myself a slight nod from him, I slowly placed my hands to open the book and,
BOOM.
The doors to the library swung open, and a woman in her mid-thirties entered. With a long silver dress, a pair of shining white heels, and a shiny necklace dangling low around her neck, she appeared well-dressed. If not for a few stray hairs that kept randomly emerging from her sophisticated bun.
My heart almost came out of my chest.
MOM!?
I started panicking, trying to find a way out of this sticky mess. I knew my mom had seen me sneak out of the party but surely, I hadn't anticipated that she'd actually come over here!?
If there was one thing my mother loved, it was her image. And looking at her right now, I could positively say that she hadn’t left the party with her image unharmed.
She approached Alice's desk and smashed her fist on the desk hard, causing Alice to flinch. It was clear that Alice was not happy to see a crazy woman enter the library and disturb the peace.
Right. She had never seen my mom before. I always came here alone.
Looking back, I noticed Atlas, who appeared frightened. I carefully shook my head in response to his question about whether I knew this woman, earning myself a sorrowful expression from him.
“Where is Hazel? She asked in a voice that was dangerously low and utterly disregarded the formalities of addressing someone.
She must be enraged because she never behaves this way in front of anyone. Please excuse me, but who are you? She demanded in a loud voice while holding her head high to convey her obvious fury at the unpolished entry and lack of a proper greeting.
She continued in that threatening voice, "I'm Mrs. Smith, the mother of Hazel," scanning the area frantically for any trace of her daughter. Thank goodness my mother couldn't see me from where she stood, but Alice, who was standing behind her desk, could see me through a gap in the shelves.
Alice hesitantly peered in my direction, asking if she could tell my mom where I was.
See this is why I love this girl. She's literally an Angel.
I restlessly tossed my head from side to side, internally yelling at her not to tell my mom where I was.
But of course, there are instances when friends truly make life difficult.106Please respect copyright.PENANAYufiz4Q03g
She drew my mom's attention slowly to the shelves where I was sitting with Atlas by my side.
Did I say she was an angel? Forget it; she's literally a little demon. She's going to pay for that one!
I glanced to my side, and came back to my senses.
Oh Shoot. Atlas. I had forgotten all about him. If I was discovered with him, my mom wouldn't let the poor man alone, but at the time, I was practically fixed to the spot. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't move.
Then, in a flash, she stood facing our bookcase, and I swear I saw fire blazing in her eyes.
She looked even angrier than “Anger” from inside out.
She came closer to us and stood a few feet away from the wooden table.
“THIS IS WHY YOU SNUCK OUT OF YOUR OWN PARTY!?” She yelled, losing it entirely at that exact moment.
“TO MEET SOME BOY BEHIND MY BACK!?” without even giving me a chance to respond, she proceeded.
“I THOUGHT I RAISED YOU BETTER THAN THIS-”
In an effort to restore the library's lost peace, I saw Alice hastily run up to us.
“Miss- I fear that if you don't lower your voice, I'll have to-
Her sentence, however, was cut off as my mother came to our table. Instead of coming closer to me, she walked over to Atlas, and after giving him a look of utter loathing, her hand suddenly rose up.
“MOM!” Unable to remain silent any longer, I screamed as I threw myself between the both of them. This led to a rough slap on my face.
If I hadn't got there in time, she was going to hit him! Atlas was perched on the edge of his couch, frightened by the woman who was standing behind me.
I held my cheek as I tried to cover up for Atlas. “Mom! It’s not his fault!” I said, in a louder tone than I had intended to.
“STOP COVERING UP FOR HIM!!” she shouted at my face, still giving him a death stare.
“You young lady are in SO much trouble”.
