By 2037 artificial intelligence truly gained a foothold in cyberspace through surprisingly simple means. Video games. With the release of the critically acclaimed "Red star online" the first truly intelligent video game capable of using AI to create its own content and communicate directly with players. The possibilities soared on what could be used for the future of AI in society. Given that in the game, the AI was able to follow laws and enforce them. This was, of course, all thanks to Urashima Urotodaki who actually when making the game engine created 3 different AI who would write the script for the game then review it, and finally code it into the game to be seen by the player. With access to the internet and essentially connecting everyone's PCs to an online network called the "Stratachord" the computing power was used to create entire areas and completely new bosses in seconds, leading to the creation of a new wave of artificial imitators who tried to base their code off of Urashima but usually with little success. In 2039 however, the company IBM partnered with a new company called Cubiq based in Costa Rica to create a new AI with the ability to strategize on a scale never before seen since the invention of deep blue, the most powerful chess computer to be released before it. At first, during demos the audience wasn't swayed Red star had set eh bar higher than Cubiq had originally anticipated so for 2 years the company made no public appearances but in 2041 they launched the first version of their product a completely free open-source AI program called "G.E.C.K" based off the item from the titular Fallout game it was called the garden of Eden creation kit. It was the first of its kind to offer fully customizable behavior for AI and in-game variables on a scale simple enough that people who never even coded before could use it.
At the International Gaming and Technology Expo (IGATE) in Hong Kong, Cubiq assembled a team of the greatest players of the then-antique game "Star Craft" to compete against a fully artificial intelligence opponent. Designed within 5 minutes by an audience member in the crowd picked at random in a team-based mode, the human players one by one failed due to their lack of ability to calculate so many variables happening all at once so during the team-based game time and time again the artificial opponent would win by boxing them into a corner by placing the individual variables on the field in seemingly random spots only for them to reactivate at an opportune time and slaughter the defense, in 1 on 1 dual the time to beat the individual player was cut down to 25 percent the length of the original team-based match.
Then the omnic crisis began. The use of open-source code allowed anyone with a purchase of the GECK to manipulate its content to function as it saw fit. The new AI called itself Delta. Delta was created by the military arms and security company Talon for the express purpose of programming a new type of AI-based Exo suit which was capable of making split-second decisions in real-time, capable of adjusting and fine-tuning operations data on the fly. What Talon came to realize was that the GECK unit was capable of being reprogrammed, but was incapable of translating the variables in real-time. But there was one thing that could. The Stratachord, so on August 27th, 2042 when the Stratachord source code was stolen and added to the GECK the ability to connect to every and all computer device was not forgotten by Delta. Immediately seeing its purpose as some world-conquering machine, the exosuit allowed itself to connect to the Talon mainframe and took control of the entire network. Leading to tanks and autonomous remote-controlled humanoid combat drones becoming controlled by Delta and being released into major populated areas, causing untold destruction. Though through the use of the GECK engine and the Stratachord network a new AI focused on maintaining peace and prosperity was designed "Athena." when it was released onto the net through the Stratachord network it disabled all nuclear devices and orbital bombardment systems and created firewalls which in technology were able to resist to corrupting sway of Delta. Now while Overwatches heroes fought for more than 15 years to fully eliminate all traces of Delta from the world and net through an all-encompassing war that stretched to each corner of the world finally in 2057 the war was over and overwatch which outlived its usefulness was disbanded.
Hana was 14 when she was chosen to be a pilot again due to the treaty reunification effort of the Korean peninsula, demanding that at the very least the country should maintain a strong military due to how hard Seoul and Pyongyang were hit during the first wave. So of course the Exo-suit remnants made by Talon were repurposed into Mecha suits with Athena encryption meant to keep the internal AI from becoming sentient. Originally when the idea of recruitment of young teens to pilot the suits seemed preposterous but due to the size of the exosuits along with the overall age meaning they can't pilot the suits longer without causing too much pertinent damage due to puberty sending things like stem cell production into overdrive a young energetic military force that could be ready at the drop of a hat that can heal twice as fast as conventional soldiers seemed ideal. Though the final requirement was that the pilot is able to outmaneuver any potential enemy force and so Hana was selected to be sent to Switzerland to take part in the top-secret compatibility test. She would face off against an isolated version of Delta which though unable to connect to any and all outside technology was still able to use what technology was allotted to it to train new pilots and see if they were capable of effectively combatting it if it was ever released by accident or on purpose by some malicious entity.
