I sit at the table

Stabbing some broccoli like I wish

They would take my parents’ place

Like they personally offended me by

Being here instead of them

But they didn’t control the gun

They didn’t pull the trigger

To my unhappiness

My aunt seems to sense

The hatred and sadness

In the air

So she says

“What’s wrong, honey? What’s wrong?”

“Nothing, nothing.” Is always my response

Just because I’m unhappy

Doesn’t mean I want others to be

Unhappy

So I eat my veggies

Clear my place

That shouldn’t be there

At all

My room

My lovely, lovely room

Filled with pictures and pictures

Trinkets and stuffed animals

Doesn’t really feel

Like it’s mine

Or I shouldn’t be standing

On the plush rug

I sit on my bed

At the edge

And stare out the window

At the cars racing by

And wonder what it would feel like

To be

In those cars

Seeing the world

But reality is like a drop into cold water

I’m not in those cars

I won’t be seeing the world anytime soon

Unless auntie decides she wants me

Gone

Unless something happens and I’m pulled out of

This house

And placed in

A new house

The only world I will be seeing

Is school on the coming day

My first day

With kids my age

In this strange

Alien

Town

Do they know?

Do they know what happened?

Do they know why I’m here?

Do they know why I’m fatherless

And motherless?

Do they know?

I sure hope not

I wouldn’t be able to handle

The whispers

And the stares

The pitied looks

Like I’m a puppy

That was just kicked

I couldn’t handle the nice smiles

The special treatment

The “I’m sorry about your parents”

When they shouldn’t even know

They shouldn’t know what happened

Or that they’re gone

They shouldn’t know that someone had them shot

And then went along

They shouldn’t know that I’m here

While they had disappeared

To go to the afterlife

While I’m still here, going through strife

But I'll put on a smile

All the while

I just want

To leave my aunt

And join them within

The ground

Under six feet of

Dirt

Stone

And
