First day

Of twelfth grade

I didn’t want to be here

But auntie made me

Guilt tripped me

The sly Kat

I didn’t want to come

I didn’t want to be the new kid

In the middle of the year

Everyone already has their friends

Their pals, compadres, amigos and amigas

Their sidekick and groups

And me?

I’m just the new kid

A loner

A wolf without a pack

A rogue

Back at home

I had a group

We were all as thick as thieves

Did everything together

Went on dates together

To the fair together

To the movies together

I miss them like I would miss a limb

Like I would miss a brother or sister

Their death took everyone away from me

Maybe the shooter thought

I didn’t deserve any of it

It’s too bad I can’t ask him

It’s too bad that he’s cold to the bone

With his own bullet in his head

The halls are like rivers and currents

You have to learn how to move

How to slip between people

And when to walk fast

And when to walk slow

The principal's office

Isn’t too far from the entrance

Took me a small

Bit

To find

Knock, knock

Knock, knock, knock

“Come on

In”

A nice oiled door

Moves like water

Eyes meet across a desk

Words are spoken

Papers are handed

And then I’m gone

I missed homeroom

But I still can go to the first period

Which is math

Who up in the clouds

Hates me on this okay day?

Who is bent

On making my days miserable?

With a sigh

That feels like it lasts years

I find my way

Through the crowd

And into a classroom

I keep my head down

And find a seat in the back corner

I keep my eyes

Trained on my desk

As people fill in

Like a glass of water

Someone stands over me

I try to ignore them

But they don’t move

They don’t go away

The one time I want someone to leave

They don’t

Finally

I look up into the face of a boy

Who looked like an angel

Maybe he was one

Because he smiled

And said

“Welcome to Franklin"
