This is kind of an odd one since, most of the time, if you're writing fanfiction it could require some homework but if you're writing fanfiction it's safe to assume most people reading have an idea on what's what. This is more of a furthering on the world building part of this blog where you should never hide information elsewhere in your brainstorming, if you do it publicly, and then assume everyone who is reading your stuff knows everything because they were there. This is very easy to avoid since you could just not do this but there are some examples, rather recent ones at that, which can be accused of doing this much to the detriment of the material. Let's start out with the MCU since I've honestly got the least to say on that one since I haven't watched much since Endgame. An issue I see some people bring up is that Marvel & Disney choose to introduce a character through a TV show before choosing to put them into a movie which makes reference to the TV show. I believe Ms. Marvel and Echo both suffer from this as Ms. Marvel had her own show which made people care about the character and Echo was in the Hawkeye show as his ward and partner. However, not everyone watched these shows for a variety of reasons and some people only watch the movies so they are introduced to a character they've never seen before and expected to care with no context given. 12Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡOnG5Hndaat
The easiest way these could have been avoided, in my eyes at least, would have been to introduce the characters in the reverse of how they were introduced. Show Ms. Marvel interacting with Captain Marvel while she's relatively new to her powers and Captain helps her grow as a person, then give her a TV show. Echo could've had her own solo show/movie which shows her looking up to Hawkeye and dealing with her heritage and deafness and finding a mentor in Hawkeye to help her find herself. Now...onto Hazbin. I've already said my peace on my thoughts on the show which boiled down to fun but mid but forgot to add the changes I would've made. However, as I have dipped into seeing other opinions on the show, I saw several people complaining that there were a few things that didn't make sense to them, and it's not hard to see what happened. The first being the fact that the pilot episode was not remade to be episode one for the show where, in the pilot on youtube, we are introduced to our main cast and two other characters, those being Cherry Bomb and Sir Pentious. We get a feel for how these characters are and how they think and operate and why they do what they do. However, without this episode, the viewer is simply thrust into the world and characters who many know the deal, but they don't and are thus confused. 12Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡMwI7CXTkQK
The other is the accusation that the show is made for the fandom who had already watched Vivziepop's stuff. Vivienne did drawing and lore streams during the pandemic where she showed off concept and final designs of characters and the lore behind them and their interactions with others but save for a few, these are never explored in the show or just barely. I should not have to go back to watch streams from years ago to understand characters and their relationships with each other when it could be better shown through the writing with either major or minor plot points. To many, this might not be a big deal but to others it could be very important to understand and get more invested in the show if they don't just turn off their brains for it.
Long story short, if you release your world-/character-building process before you release your story, don't assume everyone watching your stuff knows the things you need them to know.
