After our conversation with Mr. Graham, the next few months was just Alan, Naomi, and I who hung out at lunch and after school sometimes. Other times I’d call James to see what he was up to. My heart ached because Marley wasn’t there.
When we would visit Marley, Naomi would bring blueberry pie for us to eat in her room. The two of us would be there for hours talking about our childhood, even of what we were planning to do when we went to T.S.I.. Since Marley wasn’t awake, it was like we didn’t know what to do next or what to act on; she seemed to be the one who brought it all together.
One night, I had that dream again where the blue creature was giving birth. But this time, it was a little different. The first part of the dream was the same, the blue creature gave birth to her son. The vertical lines that went down the middle of her face and neck changed to a darker blue as she labored in pain. As soon as the child was born, he was ripped from her arms by the human doctors. She screamed in terror asking them to not take her baby. She was terrified of what might happen to her son when the doctors took him.
The baby was afraid too. He screamed at the top of his lungs somehow knowing that he would never see her again.
Usually that was where the dream ended but this time I physically showed up in the dream. I tried waving at the mother who was curled up on the bed, crying, to get her attention, but she couldn’t see me. As she was crying, I walked closer to her.
“Hey.., It’s okay. It’s gonna be okay,” I told her.
But she couldn’t hear me. She cried painfully. Her long, dark blue hair covered her face. Then there was silence; she had died. The doctors had not attended to her wounds and let her bleed out.
“Please don’t die! Please wake up! Please!” I yelled.
Then from the outside of the room, I heard the baby crying. When I got to the hall I could see the two doctors with the baby turn the corner.
“Hey!” I yelled trying to get their attention but still no one could hear me. I sprinted as fast as I could to get to them. But by the time I turned the hall, they had disappeared.
Now I was alone in the hallway. The flickering lights reflected off the gray walls and tile floor. As I stood there not knowing what to do, my eyes adjusted to the end of the hall, where I could see two people standing. One was a man and the other a blue creature. The man, I could tell, was Joseph Williams and the blue creature I could tell was the blue girl in the picture. He was standing there holding her hand as if he had been her protector.
“Joseph??” I said. Then a mirror appeared in front of me. I could see myself. I gazed at myself in the round mirror. Quickly my brown skin started to turn blue. The tight curls in my hair started to loosen up and grow longer. Then two dark blue vertical lines appeared in the middle of my face. I had shapeshifted into one of THEM.
That’s when I woke up from the dream in terror and tears. I got on my knees to pray, something inside me just knew that God had sent me this dream.
“Jesus,” I said. “I don’t know what I’m seeing…please just help me understand. Please.”
A couple of days after having the dream, I decided to go visit Marley alone at the hospital.
Even though she was still asleep in a coma, and it was uncertain if she could even hear a word I was saying, I decided to tell her about my dream anyways. I told her about my dream, and that I had prayed after I had the dream. The thing was, I couldn’t really understand it and was confused about how I was in the dream. I felt that maybe God was trying to tell me something, I just didn’t know what.
