They were all college students and artists from Massachusetts.

In August 1976, the four men took a two-week canoeing and fishing trip into the remote Maine wilderness. On the second night, while camping near Eagle Lake, they saw a bright light in the sky. It hovered, moved erratically, and then disappeared. They shrugged it off at the time.

A few nights later, while night fishing, they saw the same light again. This time, it was very close.

They saw a large, glowing object with a bright light, hovering silently over the lake.

They became alarmed and paddled back to shore.

As the light approached, they were suddenly engulfed in a beam of light from the craft.

The next thing they knew, they were back at their campsite. The fire they had built, which should have lasted hours, had burned down to embers — suggesting missing time.

Years later (late 1980s), strange dreams and psychological symptoms prompted them to seek help. Under hypnosis, each of the four men independently recalled:

Being taken aboard a spacecraft.

Encountering tall, grey-skinned humanoid beings with large eyes.

Undergoing medical examinations.

Being returned to the shore with no memory of the incident — until the dreams began.

The case was investigated by Raymond Fowler, a well-known UFO researcher.

The men's accounts were consistent under hypnosis and passed lie detector tests.
