I finish eating my sandwich in the cafeteria as I scan the room, I don't see Emma anywhere. We haven't been talking for months, but I can't help but worry about her, not that it isn't my fault we're not talking, it is. I'm the one that distanced myself, I don't even know why, but lately she seems so worn down.

I can't help but worry, I still care about her, she was my best friend, she still would be if I hadn't been such an asshole, but there's not much I can do about that now. If I could go back in time, I would, just so I could stay friends with her. I was all she had abd I pushed her away. A sigh leaves me, I notice two girls walk up to me, it's the twins Lacey and Kacie. 

"Hey girls, what's up?" I ask them.

"We just wanted to say we're really sorry and things will get better." Lacey tells me, I frown in confusion.

"I'm sorry Lace, you've lost me. Sorry about what?"

"About Emma."

"Emma who?"

"Emma Mason. She was your best friend wasn't she?" Kacie asks me in confusion.

"That happened months ago." I tell her, completely mystified.

"Caden. You have heard, haven't you?" Lacey asks me.

"Heard about what? I honestly have no idea what you girls are talking about."

"Oh Caden, I'm so sorry. We just assumed you knew, everyone's been talking about so we just thought that you had heard about the suicide."

"Oh. Yeah, I heard some girl killed herself, what about it?"

"You do know who that girl was, right?"

"Why would I know who she was?" This is really getting confusing now, what on earth are they on about? They share a look.

"Caden, I hate to be the one to tell you this but haven't you noticed the looks everyone has been giving you?" Kacie asks me.

I look around and notice half of the people in the cafeteria giving me looks of pity, whilst the other half looks at me in sympathy. I turn to the girls. "Why are they looking at me like that?"

"They're looking at you like that because.. well, because the girl that killed herself, you knew her, in fact, you were really close, up until a couple of months ago."

I stare at her in confusion, but then it clicks. There was only one person she could be talking about. "There's only Emma, but it can't be her."

"Caden, I'm sorry, but Emma's roommate found her body this morning."

"Her body. No. You're wrong, you have to be. I know Emma, she would never do something like that."

"The police were over at her dorm this morning. She died last night, but last night her roommate was at a party, so when she got back, she was out of it. When she went to the bathroom this morning, that's when she found Emma's body."

I can feel the world crashing around me. Emma's gone. My emma. The girl I've known for most of my life. The girl I had secret feelings for. My eyes fill with tears. "No. Please tell me this is some kind of sick joke."

"We're sorry Caden. We honestly thought you knew."

"No. Not her. Anyone but her." The twins watch as tears slide down my face.

I stare down at the gravestone. Emma May Mason, it reads. It's final. She's really gone, I'll never see her again. "Caden, are you alright?" My mum asks me.

"No, I don't think I'll ever be alright again."

"Caden, don't do this to yourself. Emma wouldn't want you to-"

"How would you know what Emma would've wanted?! I pushed her away! She needed me and I pushed her away! The last time I spoke to her was on the phone and she was begging me to come over, she was in tears! You know what I said? I told her to grow up! Told her that I couldn't always be there to baby her! And now she's gone! It's all my fault! If I had just been there for her, she would still be here!"

"Caden, you don't know that. She obviously had problems."

"Just leave, mum."

"Caden, please."

"No, I need to be alone right now."

I stare at Emma's grave as my mother walks away. "Death has a way of sneaking up on us when we least expect it." A voice says and I spin around. Standing in front of me is a man, he looks about twenty.

"Who are you?" I ask him.

"It's always the same question. You wouldn't believe me if I told you." He tells me.

"Who are you?"

"I'm death."

"You're kidding."

"No, I'm serious. I'm death, whether you want to believe it or not is up to you."

"You're crazy."

"He has a chance to save you. Let's see how much he cares about you." The man says as he looks to his right.

"Who are you talking to?"

"Your friend. Emma." My blood runs cold.

"That's not funny."

"I'm not joking, she's standing right next to me. She doesn't believe you would save her if you had the chance."

"Prove it. Prove that she's standing next to you."

"Okay. When you were five, you used to wet the bed."

"Lucky guess, loads of kids do that."

"Okay, Emma was suffering from depression from the time she started college until the day she died."

"What? No, she wasn't."

"You didn't notice? The withdrawal? Not wanting to do anything?"

"No. She couldn't have."

"She did have depression. She also went through something traumatic, but she doesn't want me telling you what it is."

"Emma was my best friend, she would tell me anything."

"She was your best friend, that's right, until you turned your back on her. I also know that you once gave Emma a promise ring."

"How do you know that? No one knows that."

"I told you, she's standing next to me."

It slowly starts to sink in that maybe he's telling the truth.

"She's really here?"

"Yeah."

"So she can hear every word I'm saying."

"Yeah and boy does she hate you?"

"Why?"

"Why do you think? You weren't there for her when she needed you the most."

"You said there was a way to save her, how could I have save her? She's dead. There's no coming back from that."

"You'd be surprised. I have the power to send you back in time. To before she died, but my power is limited, I can send you back to the moment you got that phone call."

"The phone call? You mean..?"

"The phone call that ultimately ended the friendship. That was the night she needed you most. Emma won't have any clue about what has already happened, no one but you will know. It's your choice, there will be forces working against you because was meant to die. She isn't meant to live, but she reminds me of someone. So I'm bending the rules as it were, if you're willing to do whatever it takes."

"I'd do anything." I tell him as a tear rolls down my cheek.

"But be warned, if you mess this up, you won't get another re-do. This is your only chance, you have two months to stop Emma Mason from killing herself."

"I'll do it, no matter what it takes. I love her."

"You hear that? He loves you.. alright! No need to get snappy."

"Sounds like her."

"You really love her?"

"Yeah. I have done for a while."

"Then make her yours before she's gone." Those are his final words before everything goes black.
