All that was left after the explosion was ashes. Burnt city – that’s how it looked. Colossal amount of smoke was lingering in the thick air now, not intending to dissipate. Debris of the building was too difficult to look at. Enormous pieces of bricks with chaffed soot on them crumbled down to the ground. Fire was what caused all of it.
George had just returned from his college to his hometown. Hardly did he manage to reach his destination when he heard the explosion. It was devastating for him, knowing that the probability of survival of his only was very low. Jabbering his way back to his college campus, he saw a red car at some distance and he did not hesitate in making his way towards it, only to find an unconscious young lady in it. Kicking and hammering its door, he managed to pry it open. ‘Lovely,’ he thought when he checked her breath, ‘dangerously slow and uneven.’
Medical school had paid off – he knew it when he was able to bring the lady back to consciousness in an hour, with the help of whatever he found in his own car and without any help from the internet. “Now, are you feeling alright?,” George asked the woman politely, “I found you unconscious in the car without any ventilation approximately an hour ago.”
“Oh, thank you very much! Pleasure meeting you, I am Quinn.”
Quinn came out the car and pulled George into a bone-crushing hug like her life depended on him, ignoring the fact that he was a complete stranger.
“Right now, I am headed to the town-side University and looks like your car is busted. So being the gentleman I am, can I offer you a ride?”, George asked as he indicated her gaze towards his sleek, black vintage car.
“Town-side University is where I am actually headed to as I just transferred there.” Unlike in the thriller movies, Quinn accepts the ride without much questioning as she knew it was her next best escort to her destination.
Vintage ride and a handsome knight in shining armor saving her had always been Quinn’s dream as a child.
“Well, what are we waiting for?”, George exclaimed. ‘Xscape’ by Michael Jackson playing on the radio riled George’s mind into ironically thinking about how they just escaped the explosion in the city. Yesterday, all he worried about was what he would do to convince his family to let him stay longer but, today he couldn’t help but wonder how his life had taken a turn, in a good or bad way was yet undecided.
Zero was the level of his anxiety when he knew that Quinn – someone who lost as much as he did in the city – was beside him, sitting in a comforting silence they both were accustomed to, making their way to their new town.
