I stepped out into this blinding sunshine that forced my hand over my eyes for protection. The horrendous scent of sea salt battered my nose. The screeching of a pair of Wingull in a nearby palm tree scraped at the inner parts of my skull. And it was hot. Violet appeared beside me with a giant grin stretched across her face. She was much more of a beach person than I was.copyright protection4PENANAb9E3TV15ne

We ordered tickets to Hau’oli City, the largest city in all of the Alola Region, as soon as we had ended the video call with my father. He told us that my mother had been living here in the Alola Region for the past couple of years and that the man who had found her told my father that she did leave a will of sorts with my name written in it. I really did not wish to come all this way for whatever my mother left me, but Violet on the other hand saw it as an opportunity for me to get some closure. Honestly, I think she just wanted to use the trip as a pseudo-vacation.copyright protection4PENANAy5aWyG7NFG

She stood next to me wearing a white, self-tie crop top and a navy blue wrap miniskirt with cream-colored polka dots littered throughout. Her sandals scraped briefly against the sidewalk as she stopped by my side; a brown messenger bag clinging across her shoulders. She was truly beautiful and she was truly a silver lining considering the real reason we were in the Alola Region.copyright protection4PENANA7LBFPsTtuG

“Okay, so this Kukui guy lives on the beach in the Hau’oli Outskirts,” I muttered under my breath, unfolding a map I had grabbed from the lobby of the hotel we rented.copyright protection4PENANA9FQOJJKKP7

“That beach is gorgeous!” Violet exclaimed, her blue eyes shimmering with excitement.copyright protection4PENANAZnc9kLPsyu

I closed my eyes, forced a smile past my budding irritation, and turned toward her.copyright protection4PENANA8FgKl5dfzH

“Y’know we’re here to handle my dead mother’s affairs, right?” I told her.copyright protection4PENANAWInMx6whRl

“Damon,” she responded with a soft voice, draping her arms around my neck, “Of course I know that. I’m just…”copyright protection4PENANAoQJAZ3mPvU

She trailed off, staring up into my hazel eyes before a smile broke past that moment of hesitation.copyright protection4PENANAkEzAoVGBaf

“… I’m just trying to keep positive. I can stop if you want me to,” Violet continued.copyright protection4PENANAj6YGTvMpMD

“I just wanna get this done and over with and go home,” I admitted, “The sooner the better.”copyright protection4PENANALbuuMuy8j3

“Are you okay?” Violet questioned as we started off toward the eastern part of the city, “I mean other than being surly from jetlag.”copyright protection4PENANA2EIBe7xVII

“I’m fine,” I told her.copyright protection4PENANAa1P8IIEu8q

“B-But your Mom died,” Violet responded, taken aback by my casual tone.copyright protection4PENANA8TCDoo7Xwr

“Well I haven’t thought of her as my mother for years,” I explained.copyright protection4PENANA1y5JakQHfz

“Damon…,” Violet tried to reason with me.copyright protection4PENANApqBezjXdO5

“No. Vi, I… my father and I gave her every chance to get herself better. Her addiction ruined her marriage and ruined any kind of relationship we could’ve had. I know I sound harsh, but you weren’t there,” I told her.copyright protection4PENANAEXZgBoEIla

“Maybe that gives me an unbiased thought on this whole thing,” Violet countered.copyright protection4PENANA9nJf6TzXAP

“Maybe it does, but it still doesn’t make up for all those years I had to deal with her being drunk,” I responded.copyright protection4PENANAx0f9fPtc2h

I watched Violet stare at me from the corner of my vision as we continued toward the edge of Hau’oli City. I saw the sadness; the empathy eyes and I chose to ignore it for a moment. Civilization began to dwindle as we left Hau’oli City for its outskirts. Palm trees and thick underbrush bordered a dirt road that forked off toward a path leading up a hill. I nervously scratched at my throat as the silence between Violet and I weighed heavily on my shoulders.copyright protection4PENANAiHfiYQHDz3

“Maybe after we finish this we can explore the city a bit,” I offered.copyright protection4PENANANJqwYxqyu1

Violet’s beaming smile defrosted the icy block on my shoulders and I smirked back at her.copyright protection4PENANAo21EbhtEuw

“Within reason, because that whole city is nothing but one fat tourist trap and we spent enough on the plane tickets here,” I added.copyright protection4PENANAWMdb5c2MPB

“You need to learn to lighten up. Y’know I still have that sponsorship from Silph Co. from when I was in the Kanto League, right?” Violet reminded me.copyright protection4PENANAPDlf9jMASh

“And those checks are finite. Your sponsorship ends at the end of this year,” I countered.copyright protection4PENANABgjCUuTn8n

“Well you better go and get published Mr. Writer Butt,” Violet told me.copyright protection4PENANAU5a7gfkj29

“Or maybe you should apply to be a Gym Leader, Ms. Pokémon Battler Butt,” I told her, “I heard Blaine’s contemplating retirement, so there’s gonna be an opening.”copyright protection4PENANAVRMg7WATws

“I will look into it when we get home,” Violet responded.copyright protection4PENANAa7JuJDYD17

She and I then ventured out onto the beach where I struggled to keep up thanks to the sand, but she was completely unimpeded by the ever-shifting grains. We came across a cottage that seemed to have had better days. Holes were haphazardly patched up with duct tape and the top half of the front door was missing.copyright protection4PENANA1Vcc3tsnMu

“You sure we’re at the right place?” Violet asked me.copyright protection4PENANAxIljYsfymM

“Pretty sure,” I responded, checking the map as well as the directions my father had given me, “Go up and knock.”copyright protection4PENANA1xTK1Do0hp

Excuse me?” Violet questioned, “I’m five-foot-four and a hundred and nine pounds. You go knock on the possibly haunted beach shack.”copyright protection4PENANA7ilkvpNXNA

“Wow and here I thought you loved me,” I countered, “If I die, I promise to haunt you.”copyright protection4PENANAskiOEhhUQD

I started up the steps to the front of the shack when a sudden yip made me leap back. I was still tackled to the sand by my attacker and I felt something rough and scratchy scrape against my cheek. Then came the slobber. It was nowhere near Arcanine level slobber, but it was there and it was not pleasant.copyright protection4PENANAGRbzBcdZdu

“Violet!” I sputtered out, “Help me!”copyright protection4PENANApkNLFibsgY

All I heard next was the click of the disposable camera she had purchased the moment we landed in the Alola Region and a fit of hearty laughter at my expense. Finally, my attacker was removed from my person and I stared up at my savior.copyright protection4PENANA3IjmwYDOSt

He was tall, tan, and essentially shirtless since the white lab coat he had on was unbuttoned and there was not an undershirt in sight. I didn’t bother looking over at Violet to know she has already swooned over the attractive man. His soft brown eyes observed me for a moment and then he offered a hand.copyright protection4PENANArzlC8WPmW2

“Sorry about my Rockruff. He is a tad bit too friendly if you ask me,” the man spoke with a calming voice.copyright protection4PENANAQmnD82Wjvd

Okay, I am not swooning over this guy too! I took his hand nevertheless and he helped me to my feet. It was then that I took a good look at my attacker. The Pokémon, Rockruff as I recalled the man naming it, was a small, light brown creature with bright blue eyes, and a big, fluffy tail that curled over its back.copyright protection4PENANAiyVCUsAygt

“It’s okay. I’ve dealt with worse,” I responded, shooting a pointed smirk back at Violet.copyright protection4PENANA2I2nlbkbxg

“Arcanine would love to meet Rockruff,” she threatened me with her hand in her messenger bag.copyright protection4PENANAdnDB1LEY59

Crap. I forgot she brought her Pokémon along with her. It was then that the man recognized my girlfriend.copyright protection4PENANAbnI60DzAbQ

“You’re Violet Cassidy,” he pointed out, “I recall seeing you battle in the Kanto League a couple years ago. You were quite skillful.”copyright protection4PENANA3dy6BThV4P

Violet blushed upon receiving the compliment and nodded quickly with a smile.copyright protection4PENANAbidPUeBycG

“Thank you!” she exclaimed.copyright protection4PENANAHo3pv334Ee

“Are you… Professor Kukui?” I questioned the man, pausing so I could remember his name.copyright protection4PENANAVIstP3n6Ys

“I am. You must be Damon Pierce. My condolences for your loss,” Professor Kukui told me.copyright protection4PENANAWaL90FoBdB

I nodded quickly and wiped some leftover Rockruff slobber from my face.copyright protection4PENANAhVZlkupoz4

“Do you wish to come in for some coffee or tea?” Professor Kukui offered.copyright protection4PENANACuM5YB9lI8

“No thank you. We just want to find my mother’s trailer so we can…,” I responded before pausing to find the correct word.copyright protection4PENANAOEjzNjecUs

Professor Kukui cocked an eyebrow and Rockruff cocked his head to the side. I felt Violet lightly grasp my forearm.copyright protection4PENANANcnMxIhX6Q

“Have some closure?” Professor Kukui offered the rest of my statement to me on a silver platter.copyright protection4PENANA1JkOPipYE8

I nodded. Professor Kukui turned back to Rockruff.copyright protection4PENANA7sNr1BKgNF

“Man the fort. I’ll be back soon,” he told the Rock-type Pokémon.copyright protection4PENANAJAS6nqPEnV

Rockruff yipped, wagged his tail, and ran back inside the shack, hopping over the front door. Professor Kukui turned back to us and motioned for us to follow him.copyright protection4PENANAupFPdu7DtM

“Your mother spoke a lot about you, Damon,” he told me as we journeyed across the beach.copyright protection4PENANALBey2g9NxW

“Sh-She did?” I responded quietly.copyright protection4PENANAtgxlnUMcy9

Professor Kukui nodded and stuck his hands in the pockets of his shorts. He led us toward a secluded piece of beach where an old trailer rested in the sands. Professor Kukui stopped and removed his right hand from his pocket in order to wipe at his eye.copyright protection4PENANA83yOSMj0pM

“That’s where I found her,” he muttered under his breath.copyright protection4PENANAMbo1JqiTeP

“Thank you for taking us here,” I told the man before advancing toward the trailer.copyright protection4PENANAQH6n3uiPGQ

I stopped by the door and my right hand was grasped tightly by Violet. I glanced back at the empathetic yet determined eyes and opened the door to the trailer.copyright protection4PENANAZPTxDMkXMJ

It was dark and a little musky inside. I entered first and climbed the two-step stairs into the main part of the trailer. It was surprisingly clean. I expected it to be in disarray and to be littered in empty liquor bottles.copyright protection4PENANAJzU8AEySxN

“Did someone clean it?” I asked Professor Kukui, who I saw through a window was still waiting outside.copyright protection4PENANAIouOLyi4nZ

“No. Your mother was a neat freak,” he responded.copyright protection4PENANAVmPPUtBeqn

I added nothing else to the conversation and started toward the back of the trailer where the bedroom was. I pulled back the curtain and found an unmade bed with some crumpled up paper balls littered across it. My eyes then locked onto a framed picture on a shelf adjacent to the bed. I carefully picked it up and admired the picture of a younger me from when I was about twelve or thirteen years old.copyright protection4PENANAYaWTixxRp5

“Damon,” Violet’s voice suddenly broke the silence.copyright protection4PENANAE8t9WfHfj5

I nearly dropped the picture. I set it down on the bed and returned to the front of the trailer where Violet sat at the kitchen table with a piece of paper that had been crumpled up in her hand.copyright protection4PENANAeer43mxFBY

“It’s from your mother,” she explained, handing it over to me.copyright protection4PENANA2z8Zsqx0iX

“Dear Damon,” I read aloud, “I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me…”copyright protection4PENANA5W5z61ONh8

It ended right there and it was then that I remembered the other crumpled up paper balls in the bedroom. I returned and grabbed the closest one off the bed.copyright protection4PENANATwnkArH86i

“Dear Damon,” I read, “I know I disappointed you with my drinking, but…”copyright protection4PENANA69Se9lFGlX

It ended right there, so I let it fall to the floor and grabbed the next one.copyright protection4PENANADrUI10KQO2

“Dear Damon,” I read, “Please forgive me. I haven’t had a drink in two years. I want to be your mother again and…”copyright protection4PENANAYHym28NJgT

It ended there, so I let it fall to the floor and grabbed the next one. Every single paper ball was straightened out and every single one was a note my mother had tried to write, but just could not convey exactly what she had felt. She had gotten sober less than a year after I had graduated. That was four years ago! She could’ve come back! Why didn’t she come back!? Was it because of me? Was she afraid that I hated her?copyright protection4PENANA2n3UBcghSC

“Damon?” Violet’s voice broke me from my thoughts.copyright protection4PENANAew38f590VX

I turned toward her; tears now building up in my eyes, and dropped the final note to the floor amidst the others I had read.copyright protection4PENANA2UFAgHJ3r0

“She wanted to come back into my life, but she was afraid I hated her,” I told Violet, “I never hated her. I just hated her drinking. I didn’t want that around. I felt she couldn’t do anything but drink and so I thought... maybe I could get her to sober up by being tougher on her; threaten to disown her unless she got sober…”copyright protection4PENANAXun0pZdFg6

I trailed off and Violet continued to stand there with a pained look in her eyes.copyright protection4PENANAhvClDSqNSl

“She could’ve come back years ago, Vi. She… I… oh shit!” I continued before my emotions took over and I angrily punched a hole through the wall separating the bedroom from the main part of the trailer.copyright protection4PENANALUgqvw8eAA

Violet quickly shot at me, wrapping her arms around my torso, and holding me tightly against her.copyright protection4PENANAfy4CztBM9S

“I killed her, Violet. I killed my mother. Oh my Arceus, why did I d-do th-that to her? W-Why did I kick h-her out o-of m-my life?” I sobbed as I fell to my knees mere feet from where my mother had passed away.copyright protection4PENANASqnvM1ncOf

Violet gently hushed me and stroked my back as I continued to messily sob toward the floor. My tears staining the many incomplete notes my mother tried to send me, but she just could not find the right words that in her mind could mend the bridge I burned between us.copyright protection4PENANAyzaO0Gl8VW
