Capítulo 21: Impossible shipscopyright protection4PENANABnrSkm8dPJ

The magnificent white tree of Gondor had already lost most of its snowy leaves due to the end of autumn. Imrahil, Prince of Dol Amroth, Dictator and commander general of the Great Alliance, discussed with King Aragorn, King Eomer, Lord Elrond and Master Funbol the details of the preparations for the war, in a cold and sober room in black and white marble.copyright protection4PENANAZKq7CvOSZV

“In all this year that Urd took over Mordor," said Imrahil, "neither the famnyas nor we have remained idle. The wise measures of King Aragorn and King Éomer have given us the strength and numbers to face the enemy, along with several fortresses that will prevent Urd from sweeping the fields east of Rohan at will.”copyright protection4PENANAwHuJavsKDQ

“It was a good decision for you, Prince Imrahil, to build fortresses in South Gondor," said Elrond.copyright protection4PENANAUfel7yHgMx

“It was necessary to place all these fortresses north of the Harnen River to prevent the famnyas from crossing it with impunity, as Harad's men did when Urd pushed our allies from the south to cross the river. I also ordered that the same system be applied to both sides of the Poros River, which will be our penultimate line of defense to the south. The last one will be the fortresses north of the Anduin river and south of Emyn Arnen, so that the whole south of Gondor and Osgiliath will be protected.”copyright protection4PENANAZLhqTUVHMU

“What about the Poros and Harnen bridges?” Aragorn asked.copyright protection4PENANACiC72MDvxg

“These two bridges are the only and main safe passage to South Gondor and Harad," replied Imrahil, "so I have had these accesses fortified, while we have built two powerful castles to guard each bridge, in fact, each castle, is covering its respective bridge. You can't go from one shore to the other without passing through the middle of the castle.”copyright protection4PENANAmrvAMD9uUW

The listeners exchanged glances of amazement, except for one dwarf who looked satisfied with himself.copyright protection4PENANA1TIikBcfjZ

“Of course, all this would not have been possible without the help of the dwarves," said Funbol, a dwarf lord who had great influence among the other dwarf kingdoms and who aspired to be named lord of Moria.copyright protection4PENANAaWiN4lAHR8

“Help that we appreciate very much Master Funbol and that we don't intend to ignore in the future," Imrahil replied bowing.copyright protection4PENANAXdztOm7YQ1

“The fortresses that protect Rohan and that are on the shores of the Anduin, the old road and the outermost one, the one that goes from Dagorlad to Wilderland, are already completed," continued Imrahil.copyright protection4PENANAVSVDbffouy

“I heard that Urd built a wall that covers the whole east of Mordor," said Eomer.copyright protection4PENANAnFvGsz13gS

“It's true," replied Imrahil, intertwining his fingers as he leaned his elbows on the cold black marble table, while wearing his upper lip to his fingers. “After our Khand allies, who were sent to spy on the enemy we originally believed to be standing by the Rhun Sea, returned with the news of the construction of the wall. At first I didn't think it was possible to do such a work, but I went to the east of Mordor myself and saw it with my own eyes. It is not a simple palisade, but a whole defensive wall through which horses can even go through its battlements.”copyright protection4PENANAbe6KIV7QUY

All present exchanged glances of amazement, even the arrogant and presumptuous Funbol looked impressed.copyright protection4PENANARPQNs22Hqx

“Urd is no fool, she wants to make sure no force attacks her from behind," Imrahil said with a frown. “With the west pass covered by Minas Ithil and the chain of fortifications leading to East Osgiliath, I don't think the enemy will decide to attack there. Nor is it an option to go for the Udun, now that this is an unfathomable abyss. The only route they could take to invade us would be through a gateway right in the middle of the eastern wall of Mordor.”copyright protection4PENANAgOcLuFlwIC

“Taking that route either north or south around Mordor is crazy," said Funbol frowning.copyright protection4PENANApTRwEzsMqm

“To us it would certainly be," Imrahil replied politely. “Going north or south and pretending to enter through the gate of the wall of Mordor, however, the enemy can travel enormous distances every day with his army of horsemen, distances unthinkable for us, but viable for the enemy.”copyright protection4PENANAKibB5EE7m4

“Then, can we not attack the enemy?” Funbol asked as he hit the magnificent black marble table.copyright protection4PENANAEDSRonxKUf

“Very close to Minas Ithil is the dark tower of Cirith Ungol, which is already inside Mordor's ground and perhaps the enemy's main fort.”copyright protection4PENANAmk9dQONiAd

“Are we not sure about the latter?” Éomer asked.copyright protection4PENANAFlvQXBvBIR

“After hearing the story of how Sir Frodo entered Mordor," said Imrahil, "I have sent spies to take the path our savior took. They will go through the lair of Ella Spider and enter Mordor unseen, thus penetrating enemy soil and giving us their report on their return. We must know more about our enemy, how many there are, where in Mordor is its main force and how that army can be sustained in that wasteland that was the dark land of Sauron. Because of the colossal wall they erected to the east of Mordor, their numbers must be much higher than we originally estimated, perhaps the information Shagra gave us was not entirely exaggerated.”copyright protection4PENANAGnuzfTXMDR

The other listeners exchanged worried looks.copyright protection4PENANA10bbe2Z1lA

“But what about the monster that's guarding the place?” Aragorn asked worried.copyright protection4PENANAf0WLRUmmw5

“I have entrusted this task to the best men possible. If they meet the abomination, they will kill it.”copyright protection4PENANAdctILICIug

.copyright protection4PENANAAvgLHvOHx9

.copyright protection4PENANAiM9ey19VnF

Aragorn's concern about an attack by the arachnid monster was ultimately unfounded. Ella the Spider, after five years of being wounded by Sam, had taken refuge inside the mountains in a kind of hibernation.copyright protection4PENANA1BRukDcWmG

Gildor Inglorion, an elf who had known Frodo and his hobbit friends near the Shire and saved them from being discovered by the Nazgul, now led a group of men whose task it was to penetrate Mordor and see the enemy's preparations.copyright protection4PENANAcWctITYwBv

“You were right, Mablung, Ella the Spider, took refuge inside the mountains," said Gildor, who kept his senses alert just in case.copyright protection4PENANAGTiQ8RRhMe

“You owe me two silver coins, Gildor," said Mablung, who in the past almost killed Gollum when he was hunting fish and was rescued by Frodo.copyright protection4PENANAWNQOiaru7N

“Did I hear wrong or did this human make a bet with Gildor? asked Orophin, the elf.copyright protection4PENANAbkKnNshMZT

“You didn't hear a bad brother, but you have to keep practicing the language of men, you almost speak it perfectly," said his brother Rumil.copyright protection4PENANAiFMAvUrnbe

Rumil and Orophin, were wild elves who had helped Frodo and the other members of the community to reach the Lorien forest safely. His brother, Haldir, had fought in Helm's abyss at the command of a select group of the best Elven archers and died there, for that reason they had sworn to help Aragorn, who had been a great friend of him, in every way possible.copyright protection4PENANAC72sWkDnPK

The group of four spies had managed to cross the monster's caves and reach Mordor without the cat girls having discovered them.copyright protection4PENANAb04VoSoGFn

The four did not stand idly by and penetrated enemy territory, where, sheltered by the elves cloaks, they went unnoticed by the guards and surrounded the tower of Cirith Ungol.copyright protection4PENANAzX2lxygZVr

“I see that they have modified Cirith Ungol," said Rumil, who was forcing his eyes to the limit.copyright protection4PENANAexzgZvBCTq

Cirith Ungol remained the dark tower of Sauron's time, however, in one place or another modifications had been made to make it more like the type of architecture from which the cat girls came. The whole thing had an alien aspect to the spies.copyright protection4PENANAn5qs0Plov0

“Shall we continue with the plan?” asked Orophin.copyright protection4PENANAM4XOqvmGvh

“Not anymore," said Gildor. “I thought Urd's forces would build more fortresses here, but I see only one huge camp.copyright protection4PENANA8JOH0OdBr7

“So what the steppes told us was true," Mabling interrupted, "the enemy is nomadic in nature.”copyright protection4PENANA1PcshchCBM

“Let's go inside and see if we can find more enemies," said Gildor.copyright protection4PENANACnRAch5zYA

“More? Do not you think that's enough?” Mablung said incredulously when he saw the enormous size of the camp surrounding Cirith Ungol.copyright protection4PENANAQ6jFOku1VV

“If the famnyas killed Agog's forces, I'm sure there are still more camps like this one," Gildor said, "we must verify the approximate number of the enemy.”copyright protection4PENANA8WKlp2yGF9

The four spies nodded and entered Mordor.copyright protection4PENANAthxkRKCXjB

In the year that Urd's forces had barricaded themselves in Mordor, the cat girls had remained very active. Though Urd had ordered a wall to be erected to cover the entire east of Mordor, she felt that something must be done if this barrier were to be crossed by the enemy.copyright protection4PENANAxaHRPwbjy7

The entire logistics army with its more than 500,000 men dedicated themselves to various tasks, such as the titanic task of drying up the Swamp of the Dead, in order to give the army of Urd more open fields through which its army could pass, and all the debris from the orc forges of Sauron's time was also cleared, debris that rose up like huge pyramids and shattered the landscape.copyright protection4PENANAfG401t2z9H

When Frodo and Sam crossed Mordor, they considered that the only hope for these lands would be to be flooded by the ocean. Now the landscape was very different and although much remained to be done, the vegetation sprouted here and there, due to the rich and fertile land of Mordor thanks to its volcanic nature.copyright protection4PENANAJDZhYR1BOl

The ashes of the Doom Mountain and the mountains of ash had already settled and pure streams were beginning to flow through the lands where there was nothing but desert, a wasteland that caused the death of more than half of Isildur's army, when The Last Alliance entered Mordor through Udun and the fighters fell prematurely due to the lack of water.copyright protection4PENANAcmvUelqqFY

“By the valar," said the spies when they saw the absurd numbers of cat girls and boys, along with other races, who were in charge of carrying out the gigantic work of terraforming the entire wasteland that was once Mordor.copyright protection4PENANAxUFBUH4Xhe

“Do you think that's enough soldiers?” Mablung asked with his eyes open like plates as he saw the sea of cat girls in front of them, determined to do the perfect job of drying up the huge swamp.copyright protection4PENANAF1SEjQwkrl

“Let's go south, we have to see what's going on in the Nurnen Sea," said Gildor and the whole group headed there.copyright protection4PENANAGDHbyWwZmb

.copyright protection4PENANAXT6Dv1lzYD

.copyright protection4PENANAOEEGjXwPiY

If the numbers of men in the Swamp of the Dead seemed absurd to them, on the fertile plains of Nurnen, there were enormous numbers of cat girls, concentrated in agriculture and cattle raising for the colossal army of Urd.copyright protection4PENANAaYCS9aOG9a

“I think we have problems," said Rumil when he saw the vast expanse of fields in front of him and the people who cultivated them.copyright protection4PENANAR74XLAZ69X

“These famnyas seem to be simple farmers, or so I hope, otherwise I don't see how we can win the war," said Orophin, unable to believe his eyes.copyright protection4PENANAJYCoFVlcKE

“Do you think the army is east of the wall?” Mablung asked.copyright protection4PENANAaUCMNMXBs7

“We must go and check," said Gildor, and the tireless men headed east.copyright protection4PENANAMkfRi0rh7B

The wall turned out to be as Prince Imrahil described it, a real feat, a boast of the enemy's ability to build.copyright protection4PENANAtDsIvLJW3Q

“Neither Helm's abyss, Minas Ithil, nor Minas Tirith can compare with the size of this monstrosity," Mablung whispered with an open mouth.copyright protection4PENANAxiI7aYmXAN

“I wonder how they built it so quickly?” asked Orophin, very impressed.copyright protection4PENANAuQoXINcn83

“There you have the answer," Gildor pointed out to the pyramids of skulls belonging to orcs, goblins and trolls that were scattered at equidistant distances along the great wall.copyright protection4PENANAvCGYkcJ38M

“We'd better go north of Cirith Ungol," Rumil suggested after swallowing his spittle as he saw the nightmare scene. “The wall is well defended, but I don't think the number of soldiers in this place justifies the numbers of famnyas we saw earlier.”copyright protection4PENANAUG5DOgBadb

Gildor nodded and the entire group sneaked north. Many times they could see how the riders of Urd came and went from one resting post to another.copyright protection4PENANAYI1nFKaR8j

“Good thing humans now use the same system to communicate between the fortresses of southern Gondor and eastern Rohan," Mablung told his companions, who, like him, were always covered by the elves cloacks, which mimicked them with the landscape in a way that resembled simple rocks that did not attract the enemy's attention.copyright protection4PENANAVEVCCfOmjW

When the four comrades arrived at the Isenmouthe, they were astonished to see that more than two hundred thousand soldiers were gathering in front of what was once the Udun, the antechamber to the already disappeared black gates of Mordor.copyright protection4PENANArTcnvODjaW

“We have problems," said Mablong. “I don't understand, with all this army in the Isenmouthe alone, why doesn't Urd attack Middle Earth?”copyright protection4PENANAgkbUy2l3uY

“I don't know why," replied Gildor, worried about everything he saw in Mordor, "but I thank tthe Valar who have given us a year's grace before next winter begins.”copyright protection4PENANAM9zdOxjeFh

“Which is just around the corner," said Rumil with a worried gesture.copyright protection4PENANAM7bZvGN80Y

“They are accumulating provisions," said Orophin, "when the harsh winter comes, they will not need to stop their march to plunder the fields, only burn them. “So with their own provisions, our defensive fortresses will not stop them at all.”copyright protection4PENANA5higbRixVN

“What's that over there?” Gildor said, forcing his eyesight, and the other two elves joined him.copyright protection4PENANAvHW4ULCdZh

“What is it, what do you see?” Mablung asked, who did not enjoy the distant sight of the elves.copyright protection4PENANAvMpGLUnz3o

“They are monsters, the famnyas brought monsters with them," replied Gildor, whose face broke down. “Some have harnesses and saddles and others seem to be prodded into cages.”copyright protection4PENANAy8GRoSJGpE

“Monsters?” Mablung asked in alarm.copyright protection4PENANAuVlq0fbDtb

“They seem to be dragon cubs among other strange beasts," said Rumil, who did not turn to see the human and kept his eyes fixed on the horizon. “They seem to be carrying tiny catapults and tiny little spearheads. They also transport a kind of iron pipes with them.”copyright protection4PENANAVZXkGJf3ji

“What are those ships doing by the abyss?” Orophin asked, seeing about six huge boats next to a much larger light blue boat. “What are they doing? I don't understand, they seem to want to put some strange sails on them.”copyright protection4PENANAsSr8JP0swq

The spies were very confused and approaching to have a better view, they stayed to see the development of all the incomprehensible things that happened in front of them. Once the work of the cat girls was finished, each member of the group was entrusted to the Valar.copyright protection4PENANA60msqnIB0c

“Those strange sails swelled up! Now, they're taking the ships up in the air!” exclaimed Gildor, who could not believe his eyes.copyright protection4PENANANVbLgRuvVO

“We must return to Gondor and warn Prince Imrahil of this," Mablung said in a frightened voice.copyright protection4PENANAOnGfvq5wTB

“The problem will be whether they will believe us, because I don't believe what I'm seeing," said Rumil, while his brother Orophin prayed in Syndaril language asking for the help of the Valar.copyright protection4PENANAW0Bjs2GbDH

The group exchanged nervous glances and headed for the path that Ella the Spider had once guarded.copyright protection4PENANAnrCzcTqHpm

The four of them were approaching the entrance to the caves and had a huge scare when, at night, they saw their departure stopped by an orange cat staring at them through the elf cloaks.copyright protection4PENANAvdJctfDyMw

Although the spies wanted to shoot the cat with a certain arrow, they saw how the cat had a huge golden rattle on its tail. There was no way to hit it without preventing the sound of the rattle from alerting potential guards who might be in the vicinity.copyright protection4PENANAaJxL20NJbr

After long, tense minutes that seemed eternal to the spies, the cat that stared at them like a statue and sniffing the air decided that there was nothing strange about the rocks he was watching and headed for the Famnya camp.copyright protection4PENANAqzS384WzLl

The rest of the journey passed without any news and Gildor gave his report to Imrahil.copyright protection4PENANAMCXEF5JBFv

“Gildor, what you're telling me, well, it's so hard to believe," said Imrahil, who had a sceptical expression on his face.copyright protection4PENANAXBMwhgyco9

“I swear to you, Prince Imrahil, that my men and I saw what we saw.”copyright protection4PENANAU2UkerNqL0

“I understand, Gildor, as incredible as your story may seem, I must attest to what you witnessed. You can retire, you and your men did a great job, you should be proud of what you did.”copyright protection4PENANAOxCLciRVUx

The elf bowed to Imrahil and then withdrew from the room, leaving a concerned Imrahil to shuffle about the possibilities, whether they were good or bad.copyright protection4PENANArR8dnquWDT

"With seven flying ships that can cross the mountains of ashes or the mountains of shadows, our outer fortresses are useless," the prince thought. "However, these are not enough to carry the entire army through the dark mountains of Mordor. I wonder where the enemy will attack, it will have to be a place where both the army and the impossible ships will go together.... Minas Tirith and Edoras are out of the question, if they wanted to attack Lorien, they'd have to go north and surround the entire Mirkwood Forest, I know the enemy can do that, but that's an extremely inefficient measure.... There's just one way... grabbing the bull by the horns."copyright protection4PENANA6xW0SasGBd
