We are each of us just candlelight

Carried by a larger hand

Wasting slowly, burning lowly,

Waving idly where we stand

.

We could wisp out in an instant

Leave our ash and wax behind

We would melt ourselves to nothing

It’s just something of our kind

.

We are all of us just firelight

A smooth and swaying beat

Sometimes powerful and bright

Sometime hardly keeping heat

.

But we are all of us still burning

Waning on, a constant yearning

Wispy winds will stir up trouble

We are weary, we are learning

.

We are each of us just candlelight

Soon to drip with heat quite gentle

We may burn out at the day’s end

Idly ashy, what once was pastel

.

We are each of us just candlelight

Living slow and dying quick

Our bodies only wax

Our livelihood just wick

.

I ask of what I ask of myself

In fearful thinking, of future and past:

Who will you be when that candle has melted?

What will they say of your ash?
