The summer of ‘69.

That’s when I met Jodie.

She was Sam’s roommate.

She played guitar. Really well.

We invited her into our band.

We weren’t famous but we had a few gigs.

We got one at the drive-in.

That’s where she met Killian - her future husband.

They got married shortly after.

That’s why she quit.

I never saw her again.

We ended the band after that.

We couldn’t play without her.

But here we are now, in the summer of ‘72.

22-years-old and done with that band stuff.

Focusing on my career as a lawyer now.

Single.

Dating wasn’t really something I was good at.

That was one of the main reasons I never asked Jodie out before.

I was scared to mess it up.

I had the biggest crush on Jodie at the time.

I was going to ask her out at one point.

You may be wondering why I didn’t.

Killian.

I was going to ask her out at our gig at the drive-in.

But then she met him.

And I was happy for her.

She deserved someone nice.

And so did I.

That’s why I was spending the summer of ‘72 going on dates.

I was on a date with this girl.

She was gorgeous, yet her personality didn’t match.

She was so rude.

A total narcissist.

And I couldn’t get rid of her.

But then I heard the words.

’I hate cheaters’

I got my plan.

I’d fake cheat on her.

All I needed was someone to pretend to date.

Then the waitress called up a band to play the diner we were at.

And who would possibly be in that band?

None other than Jodie Wilcox.

She noticed me immediately.

She smiled and walked over.

But before she could say anything, my lips were on hers.

I didn’t even think.

Not one part of my mind thought about the consequences.

The girl I was on a date with wasn’t impressed.

She left immediately.

I was glad.

But not for the reason you’d think of.

I wasn’t glad that she was gone.

I was glad that I’d finally got my chance to kiss Jodie.

And that’s how I realised it.

I was still madly in love with her.

Madly in love with the girl I hadn’t seen for 3 years.

Madly in love with the girl that was secretly madly in love with me.
