The purpose of the summons, it shortly appeared, was to discuss their entering into the confines of the research facility known as Epsilon Base. Professor Goodwin, remarking that his old office resided there, was confident that he would know his way around, and as far as anyone knew the base remained entirely accessible by land – removing the need for any more underwater adventures.
“Then it’s decided,” the professor proclaimed. “Jack, Miss Elsie, Mr. Adams, Doctor O’Donnell and myself shall enter the base and see if we can put a stop to this business once and for all. As for the rest of you, remain aboard the Rosanne and resume your duties as per usual. You have all worked diligently.”
When everyone departed the room Jack made for his cabin to prepare, but Elsie caught him on the way and said, “Jack, I want you to tell me what we’re really after.”
But Jack smiled and without stopping, replied with, “All in due time, sister.”
“No. I am fully aware that whatever Charles Vandenberg and Robert Goodwin created all those years ago is the cause behind all those missing ships. This thing has killed thousands! Jack, tell me why Robert is here. I want answers, and I deserve to know what is going on.”
Jack removed Elsie’s hand from his arm and grasped her by the shoulders. “This whole conundrum is bigger than you think, sis. I promise that you’ll have your answers, but not yet. Just be patient.” And then he let her go, and as he entered his cabin, she stood alone within the hallway, feeling more like a child than ever.
