Her pipes tighten as she desperately sucked in a deep breath. She swallowed, trying to produce saliva down her scratchy throat. It was irritating but bearable, she would curse the gods if she wasn't so occupied. She cried out in agony again and collapse into the bed.
The blankets hugged her skin as more sweat slowly fell from her forehead tickling her neck on its way down. A man that she grew so fond of gently dabbed at her neck and forehead with a cold wet cloth. He whispered words of encouragement."You're doing great".
She inhaled shakily when the world spinning finally slowed. The man rose her head slightly when he saw her struggle. A voice from the other end called out." I can see the head!". She smiled. Finally, The small being is as stubborn as she. Her painful task lasted the entire day til dawn.
"Give it a go Sahali". The woman urged, She screamed out as she stretched and tore.
She opened her eyes as the pain disappeared, there wasn't a sound. She struggled to lift herself on her elbows. A steady thump in her ears increased it's rhythm as she waited for the woman to emerged from between her legs. Tears fell from her blurry eyes as she waited. "What's wrong?" She called out as the woman quickly turned away from her and hurried to a nearby wooden table.
They've been preparing weeks when they realized that Sahali wasn't experiencing any pain of what was supposed to be her last month, it was only in the middle of winter did she suddenly bend over feeling as if she had relieved herself onto her midnight gown.
As the woman shielded the baby from her a different pain had came from her heart.
Still no sound.
It tore a wound and bled out when Sahali cried out with it."Give him to me!".
The woman kept on with what she's practiced, ignoring Sahali's pleas. As if it being a last resort, the woman bend over and pressed her lips to the newborn's mouth and nose and blew a short shallow breath.
His chest rose and fell with the woman's breath.
She paused and listened.
The woman said a small prayer and repeated her actions.
"I want my baby". Sahali wailed out clinging onto the man who held her to him.
A movement caught the woman's eye, she turned and gazed down at the small hand and saw it move again. He tightly close his fingers into a fist then released.
The woman bend over again. This time with hope, as she repeated her actions once again. She heard a high pitch squeak.
Sahali stopped her crying with heavy breaths when she heard the noise. The woman lifted the baby from his back and quickly began to clean and clear out anything that prevented the baby to breath any further. She knew she succeeded when the baby cried loudly.
The woman laughed as she tried swaddling him in a blanket but failed because of his constant kicking . She sighed in defeat and carried him in the blanket nonetheless. The man quickly placed two pillows on to Sahali's lap as Sahali reached out to the woman as she walked to her.
Sahali sniffed and wiped quickly at her wet face and held him closer. He didn't cease to cry but stopped his kicking.
Without second guessing, Sahali unbuttoned the top of her gown as the man respectfully moved his gaze away.
Sahali bared her left swollen breast and guided him to her nipple. He turned his head and firmly grasped it into his mouth with an awful hunger. The woman stepped forward and froze when Sahali instinctively glared." You need to position him right or he won't feed properly". Sahali relaxed and let the woman re-positioned him.
The woman sat in a chair nearest and talked with Sahali.
Sahali watched as her son fed from her breast and thought of all the things that happened, of what she could've provented and if it was all worth it. His suckling pattern began to slow, he let out a soft hicup as he released her nipple.
He yawned. All the bad and good that led her to this moment was worth it. If it means that he gets to live then she'd gladly give her life to spare his. She lifted him to her and kissed his forehead and breathed him in. He gazed at her with hazel brown eyes and hint of blue hidden within the depth of them. She sucked in a breath at the resemblance of his eyes. She still had a part of him with her after all.
Her son's eyes closed as his lips pulled into a small visible smile.
Worth it.
