Elizabeth Wilcox is a young girl who has recently moved to Madison Lake, Louisiana after leaving her childhood home of Talisheek. She is curious about the town mansion. 

Set in the worst time of the Great Depression, Elizabeth must learn to grow up quickly as she makes friends with someone the townspeople find repulsive, idiotic and someone not to be associated with.
