"Good morning, Gotham City! It is currently 6:30 am, Monday morning!"

Jon slowly stirred awake, blinking blearily at the sun shining in the window. He rubbed at his tired eyes, just barely making out the shape of a person on the apartment fire escape. Groaning, he climbed off of his tired old mattress and unlocked the escape window. He grimaced as the smell of processing plants and siphoned gasoline wafted into the apartment, along with Red Hood; who shook his head at Jon's nonchalant changing into clean clothes.

"Brought you some tamales." Hood placed a bag on the kitchen counter.
"Thanks. I gotta leave for work soon."
"Car's out front. Any news?"
"Sionis was at the Lounge yesterday. Met with someone, not sure who."
53Please respect copyright.PENANALFcXl0Wrfg
Jon squeezed out some toothpaste and pulled on his shoes. Jason sighed, the sound static-y through the mask. Jon spit into the kitchen sink and looked over his shoulder at him.
53Please respect copyright.PENANAgQLjgEauG0
"Any ideas?"
"Would have to be another big name."
"That could be anyone in this city."
53Please respect copyright.PENANAMEBRaiMjyc
The two exited the apartment, Hood pulling the door knob as Jon forced the lock in place. A woman stood in the middle of the stairs, eyeing them as they walked around her.
53Please respect copyright.PENANAO8qmJiX58s
"You boys be careful out there."
"Thanks, Robyn." Jon replied.
"Who's your friend?"
"No one, Robyn."
53Please respect copyright.PENANAWsabGm3TRd
Red Hood gave another sigh.
53Please respect copyright.PENANAssWgx8EhN9
"Nosy." He whispered.
"Very."
53Please respect copyright.PENANAgAo5ywZFiT
Jon settled into the passenger seat of Hood's car, pulling his shaggy hair into a small elastic and shoving it under a ball cap.
53Please respect copyright.PENANAFkHwvdK4FN
"Alfred can cut that for you."
"Yeah, you said that last week."
"He'd love to cut it. He hates your hair."
"I never said I liked it."
"So cut it."
53Please respect copyright.PENANAWyJ3iC2i2W
Jon gave a mocking whine and snagged Hood's phone.
53Please respect copyright.PENANAQIJMKWjLqu
"Hey-"
"Making an appointment with my stylist."
"Don't be a brat."
53Please respect copyright.PENANAa8IyeSOuNR
Jason parked a block down from the Lounge. He rifled through his jacket, handing Jon a few bills.
53Please respect copyright.PENANAoAqtTGG3WN
"Incentive. Keep an eye out for Sionis. You see him, you text me when you leave. Ask the waitress, ask the guards."
"I give you answers," Jon twisted in his seat, giving Hood a strong look, "you give me cash."
53Please respect copyright.PENANATqHR1GdcBV
Hood seemed surprised by that, cocking his head in response.
53Please respect copyright.PENANA7EC7WSXBp6
"You want cash, now?"
"I'm damn near riskin' my shit for your weirdly specific vendetta, man. I want more than fifty bucks and some tamales."
"Fine. Get me some answers tonight and I'll get you your damn cash." Hood grated out.
"Don't get mouthy."
53Please respect copyright.PENANAR71Ers3Zzx
Jon exited the car, pulling his jacket tighter around his shoulders. Hood rolled the window down.
53Please respect copyright.PENANA8jA9rTOhDu
"You like when I'm mouthy, princess."
53Please respect copyright.PENANAHOpLJg7Jbz
Jon gave a laugh and pointed, vulgarly, to his pants. To which Hood shook his head, screeching the tires on the way out.
53Please respect copyright.PENANApS9DFXVuJN
Jon was met immediately by an unfortunate sight. His boss, arms crossed, one foot tapping the floor. It wasn't uncommon for him to catch a ride with Hood. And considering his distaste for the Bat, it wasn't unwelcome. Jon swallowed his anxiety and nodded in greeting.
53Please respect copyright.PENANAwvsV1LNcsr
"Mr. Cobblepot. Its nice to see you, sir."
"Drop it. What deal did you make?"
"Sir-"
"What. Deal." He wanted concise answers.
"He wants tips on Black Mask."
"Roman Sionis is one of our biggest paying customers."
"Red thinks there's a connection to the dealings by Robinson bridge."
"I will not have that Bat in this building, Napier."
"He's not-" Jon hesitated. "He wants to know who Sionis is meeting with. That's it."
53Please respect copyright.PENANA6nkmeBGj9Y
Cobblepot gave a dramatic sigh, pointing to the office. Jon grimaced and followed, trying to ignore the looks of his coworkers around him. He quietly sat in the chair he was directed to and stayed silent as his boss poured two glasses of liquor. Cobblepot handed him one and Jon hesitantly took it. He fiddled with the crystal glass as Cobblepot settled into his own chair behind the desk.
53Please respect copyright.PENANAQRW8fl235K
"Jon. Do you understand the risk here?"
"I told him that in the car. I'm risking a lot, I know."
"If you upset the wrong person..."
"I know I-"
"You've left me no choice, Jon."
"Oswald, sir-"
"Ah-ah!" Cobblepot waved a hand at him. "You'll be working the bar tonight. And you will not ask anyone about Sionis until after shift. You will come back to this office, and you and I, will discuss it."
"So, I'm not allowed to ask, but... I can ask you?"
"Later. Yes. Go on, then, you're late for your shift."
53Please respect copyright.PENANAIOUtKD5IiH
Jon was ushered out of the office and paused as Cobblepot waved the other employees on.
53Please respect copyright.PENANAknPC4EzFnd
"Nothing to see, stop gawking, he's still employed!"
53Please respect copyright.PENANA0qMBrf6Xhm
Everyone scurried on as Jon made his way to the bar. Oswald had a backwards way of punishing him, he knew Jon hated working the bar, but he knew he'd get a higher wage for the night. Some extra cash wouldn't hurt...
53Please respect copyright.PENANAzd72BKN4VU
He was probably fifteen minutes into his shift when a voice caught his attention. His shoulders dropped with a heavy sigh and turned to greet the new patron.
53Please respect copyright.PENANAlexObtgoSL
"Hi, Jonathan."
"Jon, pleasure." The Southern drawl rolled like bourbon. Jon hated it.
"What can I get ya?"
"Just a nice whiskey. No ice."
53Please respect copyright.PENANAJD5L65BQEy
Jon wordlessly poured the drink. He had hoped for something a little extra to avoid being within speaking distance.
53Please respect copyright.PENANA7ggFHDhmYi
"You look tense, Jon. Something the matter?"
"Me? No. Just swell."
53Please respect copyright.PENANAfzQmEr4WiH
Jon avoided eye contact, catching his bar mate eyeing the two cautiously. He gave her a tight smile, trying to reassure her. It didn't work.
53Please respect copyright.PENANAX8iacDKbr8
"I was wondering if you have perhaps seen Roman. We're supposed to meeting tonight."
"Ah. Uh, no. Haven't seen him yet. There's traffic though."
"Must be it then."
53Please respect copyright.PENANAbESwKno3za
Jon eyed the older man as he rolled the glass on the counter. He raised his eyebrows in question as Crane looked up to meet his eyes.
53Please respect copyright.PENANAQ0TBy2CZY4
"Looks like you've got a question there, Jon-boy."
"No." Jon hesitated. "No questions."
53Please respect copyright.PENANAzt4zYPsZfu
He quickly tossed a look to his bar mate who scurried over, pretending to need his attention. It was an obvious ploy and not convincing but it got Jon out of the hot seat. Crane rarely speaks to the bartenders. But he knows a mind he can twist when he sees one.
53Please respect copyright.PENANAsNh3Y3d3g8
It was nearly midnight when his shift finally ended. Crane had only stayed at the bar for a short while before Sionis finally showed, fashionably late. Jon was polishing glasses when Cobblepot tapped on the counter.
53Please respect copyright.PENANAqZCxpRg8iN
"I trust those glasses are sparkling by now, Jon. You've only polished them thrice."
53Please respect copyright.PENANAJ9CvM5rAtm
Jon cleared his throat, embarrassed and took up pace next to his manager as they walked to the office. Second time tonight. Jon thought. Normally I'd'a been fired by now. Cobblepot gestured to a chair, and Jon sat with yet another sigh. Oswald leaned against the desk, looking equally tired.
53Please respect copyright.PENANAwLviBf8g4c
"You sat in with them?" Jon inquired.
"One could say that."
53Please respect copyright.PENANA0i772qDkbA
Jon gave Oswald a questioning look before sitting up.
53Please respect copyright.PENANA1eB3FNcgCc
"One could-"
"More so they were sitting with me." Oswald waited.
53Please respect copyright.PENANAGMXocX0wIb
Jon was quiet for a moment, face contorting in thought before realization dawned on him. He suddenly felt very nervous.
53Please respect copyright.PENANAxfaZvvTrmp
"They were meeting with you."
"Simply security measures, for your information. Crane and Sionis have been working heavily in the area. I don't want any of their shenanigans in my establishment."
"So, yesterday?"
"They arranged a peace treaty with each other."
"Are they... pullin' any strings for you?" It was more a whisper than a question.
53Please respect copyright.PENANAOm11znQAvB
Oswald chuckled a bit and shook his head, pinching the bridge of his nose.
53Please respect copyright.PENANAJrStPJmjOH
"What I am trying to say, Jon. Is you are to stop bringing Red Hood's investigations into my bar."
53Please respect copyright.PENANAuupTfofcdq
Jon nodded solemnly, but quickly.
53Please respect copyright.PENANAwZQnPLD59w
"I desperately wish to keep you here. You are a model employee and while I understand your moral compass is a bit kinder," he said with some distaste, "I do wish you'd leave it at the step. If you please."
53Please respect copyright.PENANAftTnbeSciy
If he thought about it, it was a stupid plan from the get go. But when Red Hood asks you specifically and you thrive on validation you tend to jump at the chance to gain some attention. The term "you" referring to Jon, in this case. He nodded, mouth tight shut, eyes cast to the floor.
53Please respect copyright.PENANAZJhIOSCwup
"Formal warning?"
"I would hope any warning from me to be formal, yes."
"Damn."
"Did he offer you money, Jon?"
"I asked, but yeah."
53Please respect copyright.PENANA3qAdOi3niI
Oswald sighed and fished out his wallet, removing a few hundred dollar bills and tossing them to Jon.
53Please respect copyright.PENANAuCuFrENWYh
"Do try and make wiser decisions, Jon. No one is untouchable."
53Please respect copyright.PENANAatfwEgllfo
With that, he was escorted out and to the back parking lot where he was met with his curse of a "partner". Lounged on the hood of his car, Red Hood eyed Cobblepot through the helmet as his driver shuffled him into his own car. He waited until the other was beyond earshot before looking at Jon.
53Please respect copyright.PENANA9fkEHmBHXq
"Didn't get fired, did you?"
"No. But I got a warning."
"For what?"
"You."
53Please respect copyright.PENANAHnLXLDvjbi
Hood feigned offense, placing a hand on his chest.
53Please respect copyright.PENANA8ByIyrUiQV
"What did I do?" His tone sarcastic.
"Crane and Sionis were meeting with Cobblepot."
53Please respect copyright.PENANAZv1lattIUg
Hood sat up straight at that.
53Please respect copyright.PENANAL7SWm4Ql7u
"He called it security. He doesn't want them around the Lounge. I can't be your info plug anymore."
"Fuck. Seriously?" His tone was genuine this time.
"Formal warning."
53Please respect copyright.PENANADiTfhrYU6s
The two were quiet for a moment. Hood muttered another explicative and rolled off the car, kicking the tire.
53Please respect copyright.PENANA7dMg1ImEPA
"Get in. I'll drive you home."
53Please respect copyright.PENANAXeCM9s4wpU
Jon snacked on some chips from the glove box as Hood drove him to his apartment. He made a noise as they pulled up, pointing to a group by the alleyway.
53Please respect copyright.PENANASUz19ZIceP
"Those guy's're assholes. Beat 'em up for me?"
53Please respect copyright.PENANA4bHhyKw5mS
He smiled as Hood scoffed and stuffed the chips back away. He stretched his knees and did a double take as Hood rounded the car. Jon have him a questioning gesture and Hood shrugged.
53Please respect copyright.PENANAUVz2GOpGJd
"You said they were assholes. Don't wanna lose my info plug." Hood nodded to the door.
53Please respect copyright.PENANAEa6vNJTnQI
Jon snorted and led the way, surprised that the group didn't even look their way. They reached the door with no problem; resident crazy neighbor Robyn was asleep this time of night. Jon gestured to the sad studio apartment.
53Please respect copyright.PENANA9PrYT4hEVS
"Mi casa, su casa, I guess."
"Your Spanish sucks."
"Well, I'm not Spanish."
"That's- Nevermind." Hood waved him off.
"You stayin' 'er what?"
"I'll stay a bit. Toss those tamales in the microwave."
53Please respect copyright.PENANA6CiHk6cAce
Jon gave a thumbs up and did just that as Hood tried to fiddle with the television set.
53Please respect copyright.PENANAPr4MWMCC3M
"So, Red, what are we doin' about info now? Lost your go-to source."
"Gotta change tactics. I'll shoot you my phone number."
53Please respect copyright.PENANA7ZKUB0f0uI
Jon scratched the back of his head.
53Please respect copyright.PENANAcQObGG9J5e
"I uh. I don't have a phone, Red."
"You don't have a phone? What is this 1980?"
"They're expensive!" Jon shot back, defensive.
"Jesus H, I- I'll just have to come around more often then. Got a safe house not far from here."
"Careful, Red, startin' to sound like a friend."
"Oh, fuck off."
53Please respect copyright.PENANAKLpzXITXlU
The two bickered back and forth for awhile before Jon bailed, nearly falling asleep during a lengthy insult. Hood followed, to Jon's confusion.
53Please respect copyright.PENANASDN50EMUx3
"Hey, now, I'm not that kinda gal, okay?"
"Shut up, I'm not sleeping on that bullshit of a couch out there."
"So you invade my safe space?"
"You're the one dropping your fuckin' pants."
"And I'm puttin' on different ones!"
53Please respect copyright.PENANA25ZaevCFFY
Jon rolled his eyes and froze as he turned. Hood had his, well, hood off. Short, dark hair matted down from the constriction. He looked at Jon from his seat on one side of the mattress.
53Please respect copyright.PENANAxNhIZk4V38
"What?"
"You're hoodless."
"And?"
53Please respect copyright.PENANADOzWIxDoLH
Jon threw his hands up, incredulous and scoffed.
53Please respect copyright.PENANARQ7V3CUbxX
"Secret identity?"
"Ah, fuck it. I trust you. Kinda."
"Kinda?"
"Kinda."
53Please respect copyright.PENANAJtXvzh4Ijw
Jon shrugged in defeat and tossed back the bed covers as Red Hood laid atop them. The two were quiet as Jon settled into bed and Red Hood turned slightly to him.
53Please respect copyright.PENANAwASGr9rmEk
"Its Jason."
Jon made a noise in response, half asleep.
"My name's Jason."
"Okay. I'm Jon."
53Please respect copyright.PENANAZNvmQmZVBD
Jason laughed and looked over, remarking how quickly Jon fell asleep. Oh, well. Not the smartest to just blurt out your secret identity anyway. Maybe God's givin' me another chance.
53Please respect copyright.PENANArC7grs1o9Z
Jason woke suddenly, just before sunrise. There was another rattle from the hallway and he started as Jon rolled over, peering over the blankets toward the door.
53Please respect copyright.PENANAVoHefRQMzY
"Expecting anyone?"
"It's Robyn."
53Please respect copyright.PENANAxoOC4yxvcH
Jason scoffed and stood, his hand on his gun holster.
53Please respect copyright.PENANAooQOqCK9Lw
"She's harmless." Jon patted his arm and walked to the door.
53Please respect copyright.PENANAezlSDr7jH5
Jon unlocked the door as Jason stood off to the side, ready. Robyn was kneeling outside the door, paper in hand, trying to push it under the door. She stood up quickly, clearing her throat.
53Please respect copyright.PENANA3poWS03k7s
"Um, good morning."
"Hi. Need somethin'?"
"No."
53Please respect copyright.PENANA5ENUsqJxlF
Robyn snatched up the paper and held it out towards him, which Jon took gingerly. Robyn quickly marched down the hall and up the stairs as Jon watched her go.
53Please respect copyright.PENANAzDH98oQIXC
“Love letter?”
“Therapy invite.”
53Please respect copyright.PENANA653C5EG5IL
Jon tossed the paper towards the garbage can, not noticing Jason catch it in the air, laying it on the kitchen counter.

Jon had just gotten into work, the hustle and bustle taking his mind off of the strange ride in. Jason had acted odd the whole time. In fact, he’d acted odd since he fell asleep at Jon’s apartment. But he didn’t have time to think about that, now. Jon froze in his tracks after rounding the corner to the bar. Ashley was smiling at him, glad to finally finish her shift. It was who was there with her that had him shocked. Yancey Seiko, his best friend whom he hadn’t seen in a good while. He stared back for a moment, then shifted and smiled brightly.
53Please respect copyright.PENANAvGYERzMduF
“Hey, Jon! I missed you so much I followed you out here!” He gave a forced laugh. “I brought Laurel with me. Doesn’t he sound amazing?”
53Please respect copyright.PENANALvY4LXEDOZ
Yancey was gesturing towards the stage, where, sure enough, his twin sibling Laurel was singing his heart out. Jon looked to the stage, then back to Yancey, and held up a hand to stop the rambling. He held up a finger and cleared his throat, stepping back around the corner, behind the bar. He ran a hand through his hair and took a deep breath, silencing all the nonsense in his head. Stepping back around the corner, Yancey was still standing there, looking quite confused. Jon’s face broke suddenly from an exhausted expression to a wide smile.
53Please respect copyright.PENANAUT3wMyCHZb
“Yancey! It’s so good to see you!”
53Please respect copyright.PENANAPmi6XKjND2
Jon hugged him tight and patted his shoulder, maybe a bit too hard, and smiled at Ashley.
53Please respect copyright.PENANA4Ye4LluWsj
“Best friend! Crazy, right?”
53Please respect copyright.PENANA1qHx9TCnfN
Ashley had a knowing look on her face as she handed Jon the register key. She bid them both good night and good luck and quickly skipped off to clock out.
53Please respect copyright.PENANAXd2g1sx4ux
They had no time to catch up. It had been a fairly busy night and Jon was struggling. Between training someone with no prior experience and also trying to wrangle the voices in his head. It felt like he was on the verge of a panic attack the whole night. Even the usual patrons that always chatted him up were quiet, though they left better tips than usual. Yancey had noticed, by the way he kept looking up into Jon’s eyes, practically inspecting him. Jon was tired, he couldn’t help it. Not today. It was closing time before he knew it. Which sounded great in theory, but presented a new problem: Jason. Yancey would want to catch up, talk, something, but Jason would be ready to talk business. Cobblepot had arranged for a car to drive the twins home, leading them outside to meet their driver.
53Please respect copyright.PENANAURkS7dB2NT
Jason was sat on the hood of his own car, flipping through his phone casually. He glanced over before gesturing a greeting to Jon.
53Please respect copyright.PENANA336Hfg0kHD
“Get in, loser.” Jon could hear the smirk.
“Oh, you have a ride already... That’s good!” Yancey smiled at Jon. “Who’s your friend?”
“Oh,” Jon paused, as did Jason, “uh, this is Jason. He… works in the area. Drives me to work. Ya know, no car and all.”
“Well that’s nice. Still no phone?”
“Um… no. Sorry.”
“He’s getting one soon.” Jason suddenly piped up. “In like a week.”
53Please respect copyright.PENANA6TwpT07zDX
Jon’s brows cinched together as Jason handed his phone to Yancey.
53Please respect copyright.PENANAkmkewQAY4D
“Put your number in. He uses my phone sometimes.”
53Please respect copyright.PENANAeGSsVKTtvy
Yancey seemed confused but did as instructed, waving as he and Laurel climbed into their car. Jon leaned over, waving at Laurel, who waved back with a hesitant smile. Once they left the parking lot, Jon turned his attention to Jason.
53Please respect copyright.PENANACnW46kyK4z
“I don’t have money for a phone, dude-“
“You’re taking this one. Then I’m getting a new one.”
“Just gonna give me your phone?”
“Yeah. It’s 2020, you need a fuckin’ phone.”
“That’s pretty nice of you.”
53Please respect copyright.PENANABjugyBDp8F
Jon couldn’t miss the way Jason’s cheeks flushed at the statement. The two were quiet the rest of the ride to Jon’s apartment. Jon felt his chest tighten strangely as Jason walked inside with him. He hadn’t so much as stepped foot inside the building since the night he slept in Jon’s bed.
53Please respect copyright.PENANAOv6SoRFOtD
“So, that dude was?”
“Ah, Yancey. Best friend.”
“Last name?”
“Technically its Seiko.”
“...Like Seiko Corp?”
“Yeah, but he goes by Carver to kinda hide that.”
“Damn, you got a lot of friends in high places, huh?”
53Please respect copyright.PENANA7Vf1dhfAsa
Jon snorted a laugh, not noticing the authenticity of the comment, and unlocked the apartment door, holding it open for Jason. It was strangely normal, watching Jason root through the kitchen cabinets and tossing popcorn in the microwave. Jon entered the bathroom, tossing his work shirt in the hamper and taking a moment to wash his face. He jumped as he caught Jason’s figure in his peripherals.
53Please respect copyright.PENANAxosW27M1Zf
“God, don’t do that.”
“You need’a eat more.”
“Wha-“
“You’re too skinny. You probably need’a take a day off and sleep, too.”
53Please respect copyright.PENANAsNR6jPwkY5
Jason was too close, now. Motioning towards his eyes, Jon noticed how bad the dark circles had gotten. And then how he still hadn’t gotten his hair cut. And how he was really skinny. And the fact that his entire being was sore and tight. Jason snapped his fingers next to Jon’s ear, startling him.
53Please respect copyright.PENANA1e864yXVRE
“Earth to Jon. Not trying to make you self conscious. Just saying you should take a break.”
“You’re probably right.”
“I know I’m right. Let’s hit the hay.”
53Please respect copyright.PENANAjsyXWVQwtR
Jon didn’t comment on that. Nor did he comment on Jason laying on his side, facing him. Or the fact that he told him goodnight. It made it easier to sleep if he just stayed quiet.

Jon had woken to his alarm, as usual, but found a new notification on Jason’s-but-now-Jon’s phone.
53Please respect copyright.PENANAiIODA4CFU5
Unknown Number
6:20 am: Jon, take the morning off, Ashley covered your shift. Come in for six to close. -OC
53Please respect copyright.PENANAHYzHuqRo8k
“Ashley covered my shift?”
“Oh, yeah, she called earlier.”
“How did she know your number?”
“I gave it to her.” He stated, matter-of-factly.
53Please respect copyright.PENANA61Y29nd4od
Jon stared for a moment, blinking, before standing from the bed.
53Please respect copyright.PENANAPU1YUs6w8C
“What are you doing?”
“Cooking.”
53Please respect copyright.PENANAEISe2ZBXxm
Sure enough, Jason was cooking away, rummaging through Jon’s cabinets and cursing at the stove which wouldn’t stay heated on one side.
53Please respect copyright.PENANA8nFx056340
“How do you cook in this kitchen?”
“Bold of you to assume I cook.”
53Please respect copyright.PENANALNqVSN1LpQ
Jason rolled his eyes and grabbed some plates from the cabinet, luckily there were exactly two. Jon took a moment to change into clean clothes, taking the plate Jason handed him as he emerged from the bathroom.
53Please respect copyright.PENANA7QnRum8jFD
“So, what’s the occasion?”
“You need to eat before we go.”
“Go where?”
“Patrol.”
53Please respect copyright.PENANAtsr2Whd3A6
Jon nearly choked on his scrambled eggs, looking at Jason incredulously.
53Please respect copyright.PENANA2YEN3iHvcM
“You’re taking me on patrol with you?”
“Technically we’re only back up. Just there in case Bats needs us.”
“So why am I going?”
53Please respect copyright.PENANAuhHiwLgpgm
Jason gritted his teeth before sighing.
53Please respect copyright.PENANAkq7bJAzRYT
“It's your brother. He’s been seen in the area and Bats wants to do recon.”
“Oh, great. Fuck.”
“We’re not asking you to do anything. Just try and direct us to the new hideout and maybe give us some details, you know?”
53Please respect copyright.PENANASpHppbalGc
Jon shrugged and stuffed a mouthful of hashbrowns in his mouth.
53Please respect copyright.PENANAoY4VT79usd
“You can say no if you-“
“No, it's fine. You need recon.”
“Yeah, but he’s still-“
“It’s fine.” Jon snapped.
53Please respect copyright.PENANANOP01TneC4
Jason held up his hands in defense before pressing a button on his watch, which lit up with a Bat Signal. Jon watched as it changed from red to blue and Jason tugged his shirt sleeve back over it.
