-Fifteen Years Later-

A group of nurses, who were busy whispering about how amazing their department's leader was, almost failed to notice him as the man himself walked past.

Trevor, who was busy making his rounds of checking patients who had recently received surgery from him, was in his own world as he always was. The appearance of a nurse before him caused him to come back to reality just moments before he walked into her.

"Morning doctor Harris," she said in a flirtatious tone.

Trevor, whose face was still blank, nodded his head in acknowledgement, unsatisfying the nurse. He walked past her in silence and continued his journey. After witnessing how his father's life had dramatically changed for the worst, he knew that it was best not to get tangled into the mess which people referred to as love. Because he knew, that it never brought anything but pain.

The nurse, whose name was Shanon, walked to the group of nurses who were now watching her as she walked towards them, giggling slightly at how she had been treated by Trevor.

"He has some problems," Shanon muttered, to which the other nurses laughed.

"Everyone knows that he doesn't even glance at the women here. There's probably a reason for it─"

"Maybe he suffered a bad break up." Another nurse interrupted.

They all nodded their head in agreement. But Shanon was not going to give up. She was going to be the first woman to get that man to notice her, or so she thought.

Trevor entered a small room where an elderly lady, who had received bypass surgery as a result of blocked arteries, was resting. He smiled slightly as he made his way towards Gertrude.

He watched her as her chest rose and dropped slowly, the sound of her breathing filling the room. He walked over to the machines which were monitoring her and checked the data which was displayed.

Satisfied with what he saw, he jotted down a few notes before quietly leaving her room and walking towards the next. But before he could make it there, he heard his name being called.

"Doctor Harris."

Trevor turned around at the sound of his name to face the nurse whom he had spoken to earlier as she walked towards him.

"You're needed in the emergency room."

No matter how long he worked there, Trevor could never get used to the feeling he got when he was called to the ER for urgent matters. He nodded his head and handed her his clipboard, jogging to the emergency room.

Chaos filled the air as people moved about, doctors and nurses from patient to patient and family members to their loved ones. A wave on the corner of his eye caught his attention and he quickly made his way to the doctor who had called him over. He looked at the patient and suppressed a gasp.

"What happened?" he asked as he surveyed what appeared to be a glass shard sticking out of a man's chest.

"He was involved in a car accident. His windshield broke and a piece got stuck. It appears to have pierced into his heart." Trevor nodded his head and he looked at the man, registering his panicked expression.

A woman who appeared to be his wife quickly walked towards them and gasped audibly, tears beginning to roll down her cheeks.

"Please save him doctor," she said to Trevor, clutching his lab coat. "I can't lose my husband."

Her tears continued to stream down her face as he looked at her before quickly turning his attention back to the patient. He motioned to a nurse who had been standing close by and she quickly made her way to him.

"I need you to prep him for surgery ASAP."

She nodded her head of blonde hair and went to do what she was asked as Trevor walked away from the emergency room, making his way to his office before preparing to go to the operating room.

Trevor now stood in the doorway, observing the man he had operated on as he slept peacefully. It had been a struggle to remove the glass without causing any damage, and he couldn't contain his relief even now, three hours later.

"Let's go out for a drink later, you look like you could use one."

Trevor turned around at the voice of his best friend Charles and frowned at his statement. He moved away from the doorway and closed the door quietly.

"You know I don't drink," he reminded him.

"I find that very odd Trevor but still, you're coming with me."

Charles grinned at his friend whose frown was continually widening. He patted him on the shoulder before walking off to where he was needed. Trevor sighed and began to walk towards his office.

No matter what he told him, it seemed that Charles was determined to get him to drink. But he had his reasons for abstaining from alcohol, reasons which he didn't feel comfortable sharing with him.

He pushed away the memory which had threatened to resurface at the thought of why he didn't drink─he didn't need to be reminded of that terrible event. He walked towards his office and entered, sitting behind the desk which held the plaque reminding him of his position: Trevor Harris, Head of Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery.

He busied himself with some documents for the last few hours he had left before he would be able to return home.

"You never told me why you decided to become a cardiothoracic surgeon. Is it by any chance the same reason you don't drink?" Charles asked as they sat at a bar after work. He chuckled slightly as the possibility of his statement being right passed through his mind.

Charles didn't notice Trevor's grip on his glass tighten as the subject was brought up while he threw his head back to finish the little bit of alcohol which was in his glass before turning to face him. The subject was very touchy for Trevor; he disliked talking about it. But once the question was asked, unlike before, he couldn't help the flow of memories which invaded his mind.
