Lucius Snow (Christen's twin):  Twelve-year-old brother who will take over as the leader whenever he gets the chance. He doesn't take criticism very well, but he has excellent survival skills. There is an equal mix between what and who he hates and loves. He despises black cats (but not because he is superstitious), people who undermine his intelligence, and Carson Carson.* He loves his family, the outdoors, and himself.

Christen Snow (Lucius' twin):  Twelve-year-old brother who is fairly shy and protective of his family, friends, and animals. He is a bright thinker and has brilliant intuition. He feels closer to Lucius and Dessa than anyone else he knows. His favorite animal changes frequently; last month it was a dolphin, and this week, it was something called a jabiru stork. He tries not to hate anything in this world, but there's one thing he can't help but detest— Carson Carson. He hates him so much, he refers to him as a thing. He loves his family, his friends, animals, puzzles, and peace.

Esther Spaulding:  Dessa's mother, who was originally from Estonia, and immigrated to America at thirteen. She passed away from a brain aneurysm due to smoking and high levels of stress. She divorced Titus Snow when Dessa was eleven. She was a former special education teacher and librarian. There were only three things she dearly loved: children, not just her own, books, and independency.

Titus Snow:  Dessa's father, who goes off to work early in the morning and comes home late at night. Dessa and her brothers rarely see him, so they keep each other company. Titus loves nature and the state of being outdoors. He often goes fishing with Lucius and Christen. When they do, Lucius often boasts about catching an eel with his bare hands, while Christen feeds the birds near the lake. Titus grew up on a farm. There are only two things he dearly loves: children, only his own, and the outdoors.

*Carson Carson:  a.k.a., The Neighborhood Bully Who Destroys Everything But Doesn't Get Punished Because Of His Family Social Status. All Dessa could say is, shame on whoever named him.
