Gregory stood at the end of the room by the door, his face scowled, his fists balled, his back hunched over. ready for what was to begin. His eyes narrowed on a single point, fixated on the glass cup atop a single wooden table in the room. he focused, concentrated on aged relic. sweat began to roll down his forehead as his face turned red. a palpable energy entered the room, the air thickened, the once chilled air of winter rose to that of a scorching summer's day. 248Please respect copyright.PENANAuHkvf8XxzR

the heated air churned, twisting about the room, an invisible whirlpool of wind arose. a mere draft to the untrained senses, but a typhoon to those that knew. Gregory’s eyes turned bloodshot, doubt entered his mind. what if I'm doing it wrong? What if I don’t produce any real magic? What if I fail? 248Please respect copyright.PENANAH48czdWreS

his gaze dotted about the room, his composure fading with the strong heat of energy. “FOCUS!” Mandible shouted. his gnarled fists slamming the bar table. Gregory’s eyes returned to the glass cup, his focus waned but quickly returned. the doubt griped his mind in a strong vice, inescapable, incredible, infuriating. Anger, anger at himself, anger at his parents, anger at his father. The Wisps cycled faster, the room shook with a fierce, tangible energy. utterly terrifying to a normal human. But absolutely fascinating to a novice sorcerer. 248Please respect copyright.PENANA0EW3z3rCIx

the energy complied itself into one area, surrounded the cup and began to focus itself on a single point inside it. the room went deathly cold, blanketing itself in the cold winter blaze. Mandible looked on, he saw the infernal wave of heat and energy ready to explode in the center of the room. “Get ready.” his arms crossed, examining, studying the composure of the room. with a wave of his hand and a few ineffable words in an unspoken language brought a ripple of motion across his chest. The energy culminated inside the cup, fading in and out of deep scarlet blaze. sparks hovered about its nucleus, the room stood still, seemingly lost in all time. It was ready. Mandible lifted his head and leered into Gregory’s eyes. His stern face was all that was needed as signal. 248Please respect copyright.PENANAlByDSpTqA9

in a single, almost infinite moment, the red dot burst. the fierce explosion ruptured the room in an almost slow motion fashion. glass splintered endlessly in all directions, a single shard of glass ran towards Gregory's forehead, his eyes focused upon it immediately. his body unmoving, paralyzed by an unknown force. he started his focus yet again, but on the miniscule fragment of glass hurdling itself slowly as time seemingly distorted itself. closer and closer it came, Gregory unable to focus on it in time to stop it. his heart beat with force of a thousand drums beating in unison. closer and closer it came to his head, closer and closer was death, closer and closer was a defeat by nature yet again. the glass slowed further. the roaring explosion coming to a halt. slower and slower, until the room lay still. the burning red of fire and the billing cloud of black smoke mixed beautifully with one another, the shards of glass reflecting and enhancing the candlelight, brightened the room for an infinite split second. the only visible motion, the only thing that could move in a space where movement did not exist stood solemnly in the side of the room. 248Please respect copyright.PENANAI01mDIGm3o

A slow succession of three heavy claps interrupted the silence. Mandible shifted upright, and meandered towards Gregory. “Bravo kid.” He spat sarcastically. “You not only managed to fail a simple wind spell. But you nearly killed both of us in the process.” Mandible reached out a point finger and tapped the frozen glass which just scratched the skin of Gregory's forehead. Mandible waved his hand in the direction of the explosion, the fire had spread across the table, but the explosion began to twist and turn on itself, Mandible threw his hand towards the window, and the billowing destruction followed, bursting through the window into the midnight sky. what was left was the burning table, the wave of force, and the glass fragments still left floating about the room, perfectly still. he turned back towards Gregory. “You also managed to somehow break my shit in the process.” Gregory stood still. the effects of the motion spell still affecting him. with a snap two fingers, the room returned to normal. the glass had fallen instantly, and force pulled back on itself and dissipated into the air. 248Please respect copyright.PENANA6l7gN5c4YB

Gregory had fallen, his body failed to stand any longer. His legs weak from exhaustion, tears of blood streamed lightly down his face. a dull pain in his chest and a thundering headache echoed across his body. his back against the front door. “But look at the bright side.” For Gregory, there was no bright side, only the shadow of disappointment and failure. He looked up to mandible who had his back turned to him. And let out a feeble whelp of a voice. 248Please respect copyright.PENANAjg2c7rLhLU
