Come away little lost
Come away to the water
To the ones that are waiting only for you
Come away little lost
Come away to the water
Away from the life that you always knew
We are calling to you
For a time Ayriel stayed in the chasm and wept, mourning the loss of her people and her parents.
After what seemed like hours, she pressed her hands against the crack and the rocks around the chasm began to fall.
A space large enough for her to swim through appeared but it would steadily become smaller if she didn't hurry.
Pumping her tail, she made it out safely and observed the area before her. Remnants of war still present, she could still hear the screams of her people. She decided that she had had enough of the crying and feeling sorry for herself. She swam far away into waters she never encountered before.
Come away little light
Come away to the darkness
In the shade of the night we'll come looking for you
Come away little light
Come away to the darkness
To the ones appointed to see it through
We are calling for you
We are coming for you
Many moons had passed since the Wraith War and Ayriel was tired and alone. With little around to eat, she grew weak.
She came to an island and decided to rest among the rocks.
Suddenly a commotion roused Ayriel from her slight nap. She looked toward the land and saw two-legged creatures.
"Humans..." she whispered the foreign word sounding odd to her ears. Rage slowly began to build in her chest. She didn't want to do something rash and hurt someone. With a flick of her tail, she dived deep into the cover of the water.
Looking back up towards the surface, she shook her head. "It's not worth it," she mumbled to herself.
"What's not worth it?" A deep voice rumbled from within some seaweed. Startled, she whirled around to see where the voice came from. She saw nothing. Staring hard at the foliage, she noticed a black fin. She swam around and what she saw shocked her to her core, something she hadn't seen in a very long time. A merman sat picking his teeth with what appeared to be a fishbone. He seemed to exude dominance and power. Dark energy radiated off of him in waves that would make any creature turn and flee. Ayriel however, felt drawn to him. Something within her pushed her closer to the merman.
"What's your name?" She tentatively asked.
"Tristan," he replied.
"What were you eating? There's nothing around here for miles."
The merman studied Ayriel for a few moments, taking in her appearance and took pity on her.
"Follow me," he said.
"Are there others? Of our kind, I mean." She questioned.
He sighed. "Not very many I'm afraid. Ever since the Wraith War, we are scattered across all the oceans."
Frowning, she followed the merman. "Why are we going to the surface? I just left there. I do not wish to be near any humans."
A mischievous glint shined through his eyes."You must really hate them."
"Of course I hate them," Ayriel exclaimed. "They took everything from me. Can we talk about something else? Like, I don't know, food."
She could barely keep her composure as the blinding rage slowly crept its way back into her chest.
"Have you considered taking revenge on the creatures that slaughtered your family? Your people?" The merman queried, disregarding Ayriel's question entirely.
She stopped swimming. "No."
Tristan smiled. "I did. In the beginning, it was difficult to keep my thirst for blood sated but it got bearable... and a little boring as I had no one to share my spoils with."
She looked at him and mulled over his words, she wasn't as horrified by his sentiment as she thought she would be.
"How would you suggest I go about getting revenge? The humans on this island probably had nothing to do with what happened to me. I'm very far from my home ocean."
"As am I," the merman stated. "Even so, they are responsible by extension."
She thought hard about all she'd heard from Tristan and made her decision.
"So, how exactly would I get my revenge?" Ayriel asked him.
"It's rather simple really," he said. "Use your voice."
