“Okay club. Today is our last day. As of now we only have one person interested in running for president and that is Jasmine. So everyone say hello to your club president for next year,” Chris announces as everyone claps.
Jasmine stands up and gives a little wave as Señora Alaska pats her on her back.
“I have a video for you guys on the current events of the LGBTQ community. Tucker the lights please,” the teacher calls across the room.
He walks over to flip the switch and the string of electricity follows his hand. He freaks as he quickly shakes it off before running back to his seat.
“Dude, you have to control that,” Chris informs their friend while he responds with a dirty look.
The video starts and everyone turns their attention to the screen. The two presidents sit in the back with their feet up on the desks. Out the corner of his eye, Tucker sees the familiar glow of blue light as he turns quickly to see his friend jump up. Some people turn around but Chris is already out the door with Tucker close behind. They run to the boy's bathroom and since it’s after school no one else is in there. Chris rips off their shirt while looking in the mirror at their glowing veins. Their heart is blue but beating, generating electricity.
“Can you turn it off or something?” Tucker asks in a panicked tone.
Chris starts to hit themself in the head repeatedly. When that fails they stand still, closing their eyes and taking deep breaths.
“That is certainly an interesting power you’ve got there Mx. Camp, and don’t think that I didn’t notice yours too Mr. Mylan,” Señora Alaska comments, making the two teens jump.
Tucker shrieks while Chris covers their chest. She laughs at the pair.
“I have an opportunity that I think you’d both be interested in,” she starts.
Back in the classroom the video finishes and they sit awkwardly waiting for either president or the teacher to come back. Cecilia’s phone rings as both she and Elli look down at it before exchanging serious glances.
“Hey, great meeting guys but we have to go. Have fantastic summers,” Cecilia grins as she links arms with her girlfriend as they leave the room.
Jasmine looks around to see Jett looking sick as a worried Stevon stares at him.
“Is he alright?” She asks.
He just shrugs his shoulders as he looks up into her eyes. His own widen as his pulse begins to quicken. He suddenly becomes very worried for his friend.
“I don’t know. What if he isn’t okay? He could have a serious disease. If I lose him then I’ll have no friends. What if his body parts start to fell off? I DON’T KNOW HOW TO REPLACE BODY PARTS!” He cries out.
“Well at least there’s only one week of school and that's just finals. He can stay home and rest now. I’m Jasmine by the way,” she replies as she quickly averts her eyes.
“Yeah, I know. Congrats on being club president. I’m Stevon and this is Jett,” he replies while wondering why he was so riled up a minute ago.
Señora Alaska renters the room and informs them that something came up so the meeting has to end. She throws on her coat before walking out the door. Stevon wraps an arm around Jett as he helps him to his feet. Jasmine holds the door for him as they leave the classroom. She waves to the boys before walking in the opposite direction. Stevon takes Jett home and this time he allows himself to helped upstairs. Stevon sits on the end of Jett's bed once he lays him down.
“Dude what is up with you? You’ve been acting like a limp noodle all week. In math, you could barely pick up your pencil. Are you alright?”
Jett winces as he turns to look at his friend. “I don’t know but I’m really scared. My body feels like it's shutting down. My muscles are pulsing man,” he admits.
“Well I have to get home but my phone will be on standby if you need me. Hang in there Jettson. I’m sure you’ll be fine,” he says before getting up to leave.
He casts his friend one more glance before leaving. Jett decides to call it a night even though it's still early. He forces his eyes open when his mother comes to check on him. She asks him how he’s feeling to which he honestly replies that he is not much better.
“Oh, I’m so sorry sweetheart. I hate seeing you like this. If it’s not better by tomorrow then I’m going to take you to the hospital. I am so sorry this happened, Jett. I had no idea this would happen,” she rambles as she chokes back tears.
“Mom, relax. You’re acting as if you did this to me. You can’t apologize for my body turning on me. I’ll get better I promise. Just let me get some rest,” He replies to reassure his worried mother.
She kisses him on the forehead and he can feel her lip quivering. She dashes out his room before he can see her break down in tears. He prays that he was telling the truth about getting better because at this point he's not so sure. He falls asleep again soon after she leaves.
